Hey KBers,

Me and a friend of mine are planning to do the gentle annie from napier to taihape this 6th Jan 2013. I've yet to do the route so this is a first for me.

0900 Start

Meeting Place: Square Carpark near I Site building.

I'll be riding a grey hornet 250, won't be hard to spot a couple of motorbikers in the carpark anyways.

Unless the weather really packs in, should be a goer.

Route: http://goo.gl/maps/9SAOi (flexible route)

Learners completely welcomed to come. I've only just got my learners in November so I'm still shiny new :).

Not sure how long it will take. Winging it effectively :D

Any takers?

Going into the sun over the Gentle Annie's ... ???

Either way is good, just watch at the Napier end as the logging trucks chew the road up and there could be loose pieces.

Leaving Palmy at 9-10am and the sun will not be a problem at this time of the year.

Id hardly describe it as a learner route, more like mildly advanced.
Be careful & have fun.

gentle annie is a nice ride. not sure what is mean by 'learner' road or 'intermediate' road. its a public road. all sealed. no reason why anyone who passed a motorcycle licence cant ride it.

if I had the 10 here Id come but its still down south so enjoy the day!

I went west to east but that just gives me an excuse to go back. A search should take you to other threads about the Gentle Annie in the last year or so.

Oh for sure, thats a fairly pig headed attitude though. Its a site more challenging than the state highway alternative, but hey, as the expert says, go for fuckin gold.
I guess if I ever reach your level of awesomeness there will be no such thing as a challenging road.

It would be a good day ride on a 250 ... probably better suited to a 250 than a "10" ... (except the uphill bits  )

I have done this ride several times from both directions, the last time being last Sunday. Either way is good just take your time. There is some melted bits and roadworks on the Napier side of the Forest Park but all clearly visible and/or clearly marked. Make sure you fill up either at Napier or Taihape (depending on which way you go) because there is no fuel for nearly 160kms. It's a long push if you runout. Enjoy.

Hmm fuel advice is brilliant :D. Hoping the weather will be good. Did Apiti Loop yesterday and it was really enjoyable. Bar the ambient temperature been hot enough to cook me in my jacket. Speed did not help either.

I've ridden the rimutakas and hill road. Not sure how difficult that is but even they were not too challenging if I took my time.

Any good cafes or rest stops along the way?

yungatart

No cafes between Taihape and Napier, but some nice places to stop and admire the scenery.
Be careful of the lycra clad racing brigade as you reenter civilisation at Omahu (the Napier end). It is silly season for them adn they are often all over the road around there.

All good mate, just stopped to take some photos of first time over on new wheels. Always enjoy that trip and Sunday was a perfect ride, apart from the melted bits at the other end.

depends on which gentle annie you're talking about, one's still got 20 odd kays of gravel and suffers from the locals driving like they own the road but is still a great ride the other is a logging road so plenty wide main thing to watch out for is the gravel flicked into the corners by vechiles cutting the corner and don't try to be a hero as it's a road that is carved out of whats there as opposed to one that's engineered with cambers and shit.
and stop plenty on both GA's and take piccies too

Just be wary on the middle section that used to be gravel. Although its tarsealed now there's still some nasty steps and slumping in places. Found the tar bleed quite bad at taihape end last year. Great ride for sure.

if you ever reach my level of awesomeness you wont be able to handle the abundance of naked woman throwing themselves at you. Dont lose sleep over it. not everyone can be this special.

As for 'challenging' roads. I dont class the gentle annie as one. Its not a really hard ride. Route 52, parts of forgotten highway, east cape... they would be much higher on my list of 'challenging' roads and I still wouldnt advise a learner not to ride them

'Challenging roads', '(Hitcher) "technical" roads', whatever next. Others you mention are like all others 'just roads ' !

What is the challenge ? To get off ones arse to go and do it maybe. What is the technical part?. Come to a tight corner, stop bike, get off and walk corner, back to bike and proceed.

So far I was planning to meet at my flat but I could put it more central if needed ie a BP or somewhere well known.

Just rode to mangaweka and back by rangiwahia today. Was planning on coming back by vinegar hill but I really enjoyed the twisty stuff going through Rangiwahia. So will probably hope to come back that way. The starting section near mangaweka goes along side cliffs which have made themselves known by depositing a few rocks here and there. Not really an issue for me since I didn't ham fist my way through it. Motorcycling has helped boost my healthy respect for my mortality.

Feckin' awesome ride, was nice to take the HyoWhore out for a blat.
Some slightly excessive speeds at times!

Of course, being on a cruiser meant I couldn't keep up with the sporty/insane peoples around the corners, but I found my own little groove and had a blast.
Straighter sections of road allowed me to catch up ;)

Those of you that DIDN'T come? You missed out on a great ride :D

2700 kms over four days? Averaging 675 kms per day.
Check your days, there are five?

Will take some bike fitness for newer riders, especially with the extra traffic on the roads north of Hamilton.
KMs per day = Day 1 (397kms) Day 2 (560kms but cant stay at the cape) Day 3 (588 kms) Day 4 (639kms) and Day 5 (476kms)..
Not sooooooo bad over five days...540 avg, still big days on the seat if you're not use to it.
But good on ya for giving it a go.

...Challenge Accepted! :shifty:

In all seriousness I plan to leave 8 in the morning and take as many breaks as needed...that'll leave me 12 hours of daylight to complete each leg. The Gentle annie on sunday was about 6 hours saddle time and my bum was not sore at the end of it. I think the multiple breaks we took definitely kept me fresh.

80kph is probably on the high side for your average rider travelling long distance, especially if it's multi-day. Trying to skip breaks to catch up doesn't work either, as it comes back to get you later.

Teng seems to have good realistic expectations...

I do uh, remember averaging 99kph for one Grand Challenge
