View Full Version : I sold my Busa to buy a family wagon

As per the title, I sold my hayabusa because I needed to get a family wagon. It looks like my wee twin girls have a brother or sister on the way. Which is excellent timing with me heading to uni after the docs said im broken forever, which is awesome lol. So I need a bike that runs on the smell of an oily rag, will cart my 120kg/ 190cm tall arse around the place, little to no maintainence and can go almost anywhere. I'm not looking to buy anything new, just want something reletively newish without spending oodles of money. SO with all the in mind, figuring that its the closest thing to it I have decided on a DR650. What kind of money will I need, what to look out for and who wants to give me one for free?
Cheers in advance lads and ladies.

You cannot go wrong with a DR650. If you are keen, happy to uplift from Hamilton airport mate and help you on your way. :)

.....

I bought a 2008 with 19200 km 2 weeks ago for $5500, A 2007 with 18200 km sold down here the week before for $5600. A 2005 sold in Dunedin a month or two back for $4000. I believe in the North Island they are asking about $1000 more than down here.

DRs are wicked
Look out for rattles in the bottom end (balance shaft chains, some muppets forget to adjust them)
The neutral switch screws can drop out, it's behind the clutch basket and is worth whipping out to check, you don't want the sender unit in your clutch at 6000rpm... loctite 'em, or do what I've done on my DR600 motor and lockwire the fuckers, with loctite, and prayer.

Oh, and just give me the motor...

The DR650's haven't had balancer shaft chains for 16 years

Just in case he was looking at an early one  seeing as he didn't specify (or I missed that part)

It is indeed, as is the upper chain roller ripping off and taking a chunk of the frame with it.

What about oil pumps? I've seen one with slightly loose screws on the pump, that was a worry. Bloody good motors though, you can take them out to a fairly decent size too

Road bike? There is usually some poor bugger who has to unload his Hornet 900 in a hurry selling it for too little on Trademe. Mind you the same applies to any bike on TM!

Check for a noisy third gear when you test ride, can result in catastrophic engine damage.

Nope. Noisy 3rd shows no correlation.

Mine whines like a supercharger :Punk:

And mine never made a sound before it went clunk causing me to coast to a stop.

OK, that was based on hearing a friends DR whining so loud I could hear it from riding alongside and shortly afterwards it did this. Just out of warranty, too. Fortunatly caught before it caused too much collateral damage
This was June 2009

Mine has been whining for over 50,000km now...

Mine whined too. Pulled it to bits and was good as gold. $1k+ for nothing. Opinion is that poorly shaped (cut) making noise but strong as.

My 3rd gear seems fine (2008), but my mate's old DR makes a bit of noise (2002?). I'm pretty well known for destroying gear boxes, but that's always been on Kwakas. ;)

Did I hear somewhere that they improved things from the 2008 model onwards? Could be all BS.

What to look out for? Hmmm, tinkering owners I suspect...maybe trying to make a bike into sommit it will never be?
All the guy did was post news that he sold his Busa and wanted a DR650 because he liked them.....
Ha.....Now he is gonna buy something inferior after all of this scaremongering...Maybe?

I have one for sale still, yes, the chain rollers are intact (never been off road, that's why)
Third gear works fine, doesn't whine (rider does) :) when it gets tough....
All in all it is a good bike.......NO, great bike. :)

Things to do?
Wait for it to snow, then spend five months in my man cave thinking of things to try and make better after getting paranoid reading ADV rider forums!
Alas, it is summer here, so that ain't ever gonna happen.
ride the bike, if it isn't what you are after why try making it something it isn't? Huh? :brick:
