View Full Version : Ladies, what do you wear under your bike gear?

Hopefully there's not another thread on this though I'd not be surprised if there were. So, what DO you wear under your gear when just road riding? I've been getting mighty hot lately with summer and all, just wearing a singlet and 3/4 pants/leggings. What say you?
Oh and underwear goes without saying,.... or does it? ;)

I wear my drystar jacket and pants with the thermal lining removed. There were a couple air vents I'd opened up to help me out but blardy hell I sure do get all kinds of gross and sweaty! Most unbecoming for a young lady such as myself :oi-grr: never in my life have I worked up such a sweat! I thought perhaps I should wear some of that material like they do for running, is meant to draw away the moisture and keep you cool?

I think I need some sort of leggings though cause my legs get all yucky too ewwww. Tried to find one of those very thin running singlets that dry real quick but no such luck, will look another day. Just sick of the humidity we have sometimes! thought I might get a sports bra to try and combat the under and between booby sweat-age. Sexayyyy...

Not a Biker Angel so will probably get removed but, as I am trying to sort this problem myself...(us men of "senior" status are particularly at risk but probably, if the truth be told, the least likely to so something sensible about the problem). Check these out before the mods get to me...

I wear marino leggings under cordura. Stops them from sticking. That really hurts actually.
I wear a singlet top, under a summer jacket that lets air through.
I will wear a summer frock, over pants, and take the pants, and my leggings :pinch: off when I arrive.
Anything that keeps me safe if I happen to meet tarmac, that I can wear in the heat.
Worst thing ever...
Wearing good quality gear and sweating your nuts off, while stationary.
Carry water, and drink it when stopped.

Ok, I'm not a lady, but the most sensible thing under any biking apparel has to be merino leggings and merino long sleeved shirt. High natural fibre content, wicks away sweat and even has a degree of temperature control.
The most :eek5: thing I've seen a woman wear under leather was a string bikini, and it wasn't at a dodgy location even :sweatdrop

I use some cheap(ish) compression baselayer gear off trademe. Worn them for 2 summers now and love them. No more getting stuck to leathers on hot days.

I was working on my wee rgv back in my teens when I was still living at home, reeeeeally hot day, bikini top, grease up to my elbows - chucked my helmet on to fang it up the street make sure my fixit work was fine.... uuuummmmm Dad was coming home and passed me going the opposite direction!

Usually just a teeshirt or long sleeved thermal under jacket, depending on the weather; just me undies under bike pants - since reaching that wonderfully special (tui) stage of my life where my body has decided to alter it's shape considerably I cannot fit any pants or leggings under my riding pants. I'm cheesed off about it as my son, who does weigh more than me, can wear jeans under the leather pants I originally had (when even back in the day, I could not do that); and my husband is also able to wear jeans and lightweight trousers under his bike pants. Maybe I have to resign myself to looking like the Michelin man's mother if I want to be able to have any layer of clothing under my gear :weep:

Seeeeee, merino thermal type stuff is the go then, it's thin and yet comfy. Also known to be slimming ahem, if that's one of the required attributes...:bleh:

wicking gear is great under leather. NOTHING is gonna help under textile tho. Essentially you are wrapped in a plastic bag, nowhere for the sweat to go.
Did a bit of loggingtrack riding in the hills behind Shannon recently. Sweated like a horse, got to the power station and downtrou'd in the shade just to let my liners and undies dry off a bit. Don't even want to imagine how bad it must have looked, but you know? I don't care either.

I also recommend any with a possum fur blend ... it is quite effective.
But nothing feels as smooth ... like silk (I'd wear it myself if I wasn't so tough :innocent:) ... well nothing I'm allowed to say/talk about in "Biker Angels" ..

Silk? nothing wrong with silk Trev. except for the price, far far better than any synthetic man made junk. Silk linings have been used in mens clothing for many years, and if you can get a silk jump suit. then you will be comfy as. The modern equivalent satin, is crap. But I do agree Marino with possum fur mix, ( also expensive) very very good.
I have a black silk suit that is so light and cool to wear in summer.

You've got the wrong textile then. Get the right textile and you'll be able to go through a greater range of temperatures than leather. Leave the waterproof liners in, or have gear where it's stitched in, and sure, it's not going to be pleasant.
I've ridden in 53 degrees in textile jacket and pants. Hot, but having the (hot) air flow through still provides cooling.

I was wearing Orca which I got on special, but to be honest the sizing is a bit weird. I am pretty average sized but the legs and arms are way too long so I fold them back. Good quality but worth trying on if you can.
I have some 2XU which is a much better fit but expensive.
I think for riding even cheaper brands would be good.
And yeah I was amazed at how much better it is under my leathers in hot weather!

Most of the time I just wear my Oxford Chill Out which has the wicking material to draw away sweat from the back and my jacket is the ventilator, so nothing but lovely breeze going straight through. If too hot for chill out gear I stick with the skins I got from Rebel Sport.

I still haven't sorted this properly. After a few months of riding now I've decided I definitely need some tights, like skins maybe or something, full length, cause in the heat my legs stick to my pants and so when I get my feet up onto my pegs they're super tight on my thighs and knees and makes it uncomfortable to ride.

How about not wearing black all the time? My last set of race leathers were mainly white, much better.
Yeah they can get dirty but cleaning isnt hard.

Black makes you visible? Dont think so.
Well why do people wear hi viz to be seen then?
I dont get road coloured clothing making you stand out.
Up to you.
Bandages are also white but I can take my leathers off when I choose. They are white/orange reddish.

you could wear a pink tutu, it won't make a difference, if people don't look your direction they are still not going to see you.
Wish it was different.
I have a black bike, black gear. Yes I wear hi viz, headlight doesn't have a 'off' switch. but still people 'just didn't see you sorry'
+2 on that, and will add that any other colour than black can become camouflage in the right conditions.
Even at night black can be readily seen more than some colours.
Then there are those who wear camouflage colours...really Camouflage on a bike?
I thought the idea was to be seen , not hidden.
+3

One of ACC's own pieces of research - and on their website - says that black gear may actually be the best in rural situations because it stands out from the background much better than colours do ... and that plain single colours a better in an urban environment ...
The paper is actually mesy because it has several pieces of reseach which have slightly different outcomes .. but it is not so obvious that hi-viz is really best ..

At a rural petrol station the other day. I was just done and took of my glasses (I'm short-sighted) to put on my helmet. At the same time two bikers left the petrol station, one with high viz the other one in black. I was able to follow the one in hi viz easily with my eyes, but the one in black just sort of blurred into the road/tree background.
Another day I was in my car on the new SH1 around Taupo (ETA) I was able to make out a cyclist in orange high viz from nearly a km away around a corner. (Ok, at that distance I was wondering if it was a traffic cone I was seeing, but at least I noticed him :))
So yeah, for me high viz seems to work, thats why I wear it, but I have to admit my black leather jacket looks much better without the high viz vest on :(

For them to admit "they" DID see you ... is an admission "they" ... fucked up.

but boots- thats going to be my challange. I have dancers calfs so nothing fits round there. the only ones that i have taken a fancy to and fit are $500. I want them with a slightly pointed toe so i can get away with wearing them at work, slightly heel risen would be nice too as I'm a short shit and would make it easier to get away with at work.

I am 5ft 8ish and they are if anything, slightly too short for me, but not by much and I have a size medium I think. I bought my pants and jacket because they zip together which I do like. My boots, well you saw what I have in that link and they are too big around the calves for me a bit but that's because my feet are pretty big but the legs aren't, ya know. But they're not shoes that are appropriate for wearing to work.

There seem to be quite a few boots that would look ok in an office. Hehe, as long as you were long pants with them and not a short skirt...although that might look interesting :D
I just had a quick look here: http://www.boydmotorcycles.co.nz/Store/?c=71130&t=1
Although not sure about the calfs, but many of the boots are cut to be wide enough to stuff your pants in.
Finding pants can be really annoying. But I wouldn't buy them online if you already have problems finding fitting ones in the shop. If they don't have anything to fit you at the shop have them order stuff in in different sizes. They should be able to send them back without problems if they don't fit.

Coroprate administrator for me, but I always wear pants and the same short heeled boots. I'd feel so strange in a dress. I used to wear 5" stilettos, but then I decided on comfort and started parking further away.
I'm tempted to put a little piece of frabric under my gear shift so I don't scratch my boots and then just learn to ride in these for the to and from work commute. They are leather and ankle high.

Why don't you just keep a spare pair of shoes at work? I have to when I ride my bike to work, albeit not that often. I have to have steel cap boots for work though, can't wear my moto boots. Personally in terms of riding my bike to work I'm more concerned about messing up my hair and makeup than my footwear, lol.

I have curls so hair is a nightmare, I found a satin/silk scarf works wonders.

Currently I'm finding that even at 5am with the winter lining in, I am quite happy with nothing on under the trousers, and just a polo on under the jacket.
Summer on the other hand.. Oh wow did that get hot! I tended to go with 3/4 leggings or some short shorts (thats the only time I will wear them actually), and have a t-shirt on, no bra, under my jacket. Better for modesty/not traumatising others that way. Though if I have no intention of stopping during my ride, then might just go with nothing on *gasp*:msn-wink:

My flatmate says I have "second dinners" and too many snacks. Also, I work in the food industry which means free lunches and fizzies if I like and of course.. taste testing...

And you claim to be fat !!!! I think it is urgent that you heck this one out - do the assessment
http://casapalmera.com/assessments/eating-disorder-self-assessment/
Your eating disorder self-assessment score is 46
You scored between 39 and 50
Strong tendencies toward bulimia nervosa.
If you scored below 50, it would be wise for you to 1) seek more information about anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa and 2) contact a counselor, pastor, teacher, or physician in order to find out if you have an eating disorder and, if you do, talk about what kind of assistance would be best for you.
Well that's interesting...... I am going to see a dietitian next week, because of food related medical condition but not bulimia or anorexia

Your eating disorder self-assessment score is 52
You scored between 50 and 60
Weight conscious. May or may not have tendencies toward an eating disorder. Not likely to have anorexia or bulimia nervosa. May have tendencies toward compulsive overeating, obesity, or binge-eating disorder.
If you scored between 50 and 60, it would be a good idea for you to talk to a counselor, pastor, teacher, or physician in order to find out if you have an eating disorder and, if you do, how to get some help.

far out .. I scored 60 .. but more importantly, there does not seem to be any score which would tell you that there is no problem .. any score suggests that you taklk to someone about a possible eating disorder ...

I don’t need a farking quiz to tell me I have an eating disorder. My dress size is oh-my-god-it's-coming-towards-us, I use a mattress as a maxi-pad, when I take a shower my feet don't get wet, when I have sex and he rolls over twice, he is still on top of me! And my asrehole gets mistaken for the blackhole.

You know it's bad when you start saying ... beep beep beep ... as you walk backwards ...
And if he has to roll over twice ... at least one of you is getting exercise ...

Ladies, today I woke up late. I rode my bike to work and made it on time. I then got changed out of my bike gear only to discover - oh shock horror gasp... I'd forgotten my work shoes. So, today I rock my Dainese boots in the office. I'm too cool  (i'm actually mortified, but i'm pretending that this is fashionable).

Haha this is why I keep a spare set of work boots in my office so I can just hop on the bike and go. I also keep spare jeans by my desk too cause I can't sit on my bike comfortably with them on (too tight around the thigh area - hah!)

Lesson learnt - will leave spare shoes at work (will also pack gear the night before). Could have been worse, imagine if I'd forgotten my pants or skirt....
I'm just super glad that these boots are so comfy.
Only person who has spotted that these aren't traditional boots is one of the bosses whose husband does bucket racing. She giggled. I love my co-workers :D

Ok, I've got the jacket/helmet/gloves/boots, but I am getting cold legs just wearing my jeans. I've looked around for something that will block the breeze, but so far I've found nothing. Where can I buy reasonably priced protective leg wear. I'm also starting to get hot under my leather upper stuff, so any help in learning to dress properly would be appreciated. REMEMBER I'm a newbie at this, so be kind

If you want to wear jeans, Draggin' jeans def do a good job of blocking some wind because of the kevlar knees. Having said that...they don't protect against impact, only sliding, in the event of a crash. Otherwise just go for some textile pants, Rev'it do a good ladies range with knee armour etc. I can only recommend shops up here (Akl) for where to buy gear though, although Motomail can do online ordering and they are great for ladies gear.
Leathers are great and the best protection you can get, but unfortunately there's no way around the heat issue. You just have to ride faster! Some leathers do have breather panels in them, though...

Get some decent Kevlar jeans as above.
Thought I would just add that they have to be decent as the cheap ones don't have as much kevlar, which other than potentially not helping as much in a spill, the lack of it makes them considerably cooler (particularly the Snell ones).
If you're on a budget, buy second hand. There is a lot of chicks gear on trademe that has never been, or hardly been worn if you're fussy.
As for being to hot, if you're just rocking around town a textile jacket might be a better option, or decent under layers that control your temp a bit better like merino. morphic.co.nz do some pretty cool merino stuff.
