Hi anyone have any k owledge on checking starter relay and or ignitor on 1983 xj550 yamaha. Lights on but mo one home. That is turn the key on green nudtral light comes on , press the starter buttpn and nothing.? Cheers Tony

Check it's not in gear and/or the side stand cut-out switch is not playing up.

No has no sidestand cutout saefty switch.poss rdmoved before i bought the hike. Love the old girl. Just sold my cbr1000 last month so need to get the xj tunning. Doesnt look like anythkng is wrong when i opened the ignitor. The starter solinoid looks ok ?sorry abojt spelling bloody andriod ta let small for us lld buggas

That would be my next guess ... :yes:

But have a look at HOW the side stand cut-out switch was removed/rewired. Sometimes it isn't that well done. And gets a short in what remains .... :angry:

Even check if there's crud behind the starter button. It's a nice spider house in there ... :pinch:

Poss, will recheck it but bike has been running great for few years,even under preasure at ruapuna have a godays. Was sitting outside under a tarp for few months after last big earthquake then in the garrage. Started once then after about 6 month and even with a new battery nothing but the green light. Looks kike a job fof the auto elecs,, maybe. Thanks

Get a cheap multimeter, check it's getting 12v to the solenoid and that it's getting 12v from that to the starter motor
If you have a mint battery and have 12v at the sstarter, clean the earths
If cleaning connections and replacing the starter wire doesn't help, I' say it's a dud

If you don't get 12v at the starter, but do at the solenoid, check the kill switch for continuity and the side stand switch circuit
Then check the starter switch (may as well when you do the kill)
then all other associated circuits.

There is relay or two, neutral clutch and sidestand switches, and a diode block that allow/don't allow the starter to operate.

Start with the basics, and stick a wire straight from the starter solenoid to the battery and see if it turns over, if that works then it's time to start looking at the others stuff.

Maybe could have a quick look if you're somewhere close to where I am.....

A test lamp is cheap and invaluable for this kind of problem.

Put one side on earth. Then use the probe on all fuses. Lamp should light both side of all fuses this shows circuit is "hot". If only hot one side fuse may be blown. If neither side is hot, fuse is on a circuit that is not live.

Then put lamp on solenoids "large" contacts, one should be hot, on battery side.

Then use probe on small wire into solenoid, (sometimes there are two wires, one from start switch one to earth.)

One from starter switch should be hot when start pushed.

If neither light then fault is towards ignition switch.
If both light solenoid has no earth - it may get earth through a safety switch on stand, clutch, kill switch etc.

If circuit from start switch hot, earth ok and one large terminal on starter solenoid hot, put lamp on other side of solenoid. It should be hot when start switch is pressed. If its hot when switch pressed start motor may be problem.

Borrow screwdriver off someone you don't like. Use it to bridge (short out) the two big terminals on starter solenoid. If bike cranks solenoid faulty, and screwdriver now fucked.
