That wouldn't even qualify one for the slow group at a track day...maybe he got rejected?

Oooh... I wonder how they measure the speed - radar, point-to-point.

Dunno what they need the bird for, at that speed surely all they need is a cleanup crew :shifty:

Similar methods get used in Canterbury. They mark the road in the "danger areas being monitored" and count the time the vehicles take to travel between marked points. Then radio local officers to intercept them.

It clearly says in the article on Stuff that the guy was clocked by ground patrols... So I'm gonna guess Radar or Laser. The bird woulda just been to look out for those avoiding patrols or obviously travelling at much higher or lower speeds than the other traffic.

Without the "Locked on speed" by ground staff ... only "exceeding the posted speed limit" could be charged. Locked on speed gives a likelyhood of a better financial return ...

It's BS. Do you really think the police have the financial resources to send a plane up in the air all day. They do it in Arizona and California to scare drivers into slowing down.

The cost of a light plane charter for a few hours of peak time traffic conditions ... and the large area they cover/monitor in that time ... it is actually cost effective ...

Wait until it's drones with laser.

Anytime anywhere, fly in close enough to capture the plate and the ticket is sent

Oh... and police are already testing drones, but I would guess it's more for dangerous hostage type scenarios, where they can have a look at the situation...

They've had drones driving their cars for years.

So what are they testing them for now,,,,a sense of humour ?

Did you ever see that thing about the University of Texas students who managed to hijack a civilian-type UAV and almost forced it to crash using a GPS device they built for about $1,000?

I'd imagine that military drones are a completely different story, but it seems like current generation civvie UAVs are actually really easy to hijack/jam.

First I've heard, but that sounds pretty damn awesome. Might as well hijack one of the UAVs and crash it into a mosque. That will teach them cheeky terrorists.

It's planely obvious there's an attempt to foil offenders via lofty means. Let's hope it doesn't drone on and on however.

All based on decisions made at high levels ... flying in the face of ridicule maybe.

What the hell ... we tax payers can afford it ... Oh wait ...

They were doing it between warkworth and dorkland in the 80,s. Couple of lines painted on the road and a plane in the sky, and there would be a copper waitng for you at puhoi.:Punk::Punk:

Yep remember the Mamaku's on Highway 5 to Rotovegas had the lines to , they were mainly used on the country roads with a known speeding history in the end it became to costly to continue with it, then we got the hawk radar and speed cameras.

Road toll up 11%! Geez. What's going on? Could it be something other than speed? Like driver inattention? I'm gonna blame the 4km/h tolerance ;)

There was stuff all motorcycles ridden to wangas on boxing day, stuff all cops on the road, cloud base of about 1000 ft, thunderstorms rolling across central all day. It wasn't a good day for traffic managenent in a plane. Even the camera van is painted in police colours with 'strategic traffic management' painted in the side, like that is real sneaky.

Yup, I remember that. Weren't there some "extra" white lines "applied" and a bit of black paint easily used on the existing ones, by some naughty locals?

Yes that is true. They did the same thing on the back road between palmerston Nth and Fielding. I never met or heard of anyone that actually got a ticket this way.

On the Desert Rd Friday, about 1.45pm, a police patrol pulled over a south bound camper van. I had commented earlier how quiet the road was. Behind the camper I counted 85 vehicles before I realised I can't count that high.

Well done Desert Rd police on Friday.:2thumbsup

If they got pinged by radar at the time (locked on speed) ... they wouldn't have known. And the cop probably wouldn't have said.
