Here is a photo of an old truck that features in my family history. Can anyone identify it please. It was owned by Smyth bros & Boyrer at Artimuri, I had thought it was a 1929 SF International that dad drove. but looks a bit big for that time.

No don't know about the truck. We used to own the property a number of years back at Atiamuri that was the old mill from yester year. Heaps of old cars and trucks around we got rid of, plus many more that were buried before our time there.

Was the mill at place called Ongaroto? . ( part of what was called Atiamuri). My father carted timber from that mill to Rotorua before the war. My grandparents ran the cookhouse there in the early '30's

International was one of the few big American trucks in NZ in the '30's, so more than likely an International....the cab would be NZ made. American trucks normally had spider hubs, but don't know if they had them this early. I could steal the photo and put it on HCVC, an Australian vintage truck forum if you want.

We lived in Bennydale for 10 years dad was the mechanic in the garage for PGF.Seeing logs like that every day was normal mum and dad came over here to Tauranga to look around and dad told us the loggers carried 30 or more logs overe here.So i had this picture in my head of these massive great trucks, turned out they carried match sticks not trees :)
i sent a copy of the pic to dad as he may know it

I'm betting it's a mid to late '20's REO Speedwagon (quite a few of them were used as logging trucks in NZ)

Reo rings a bell regarding my OP.

Here is the 1929 SF International with my father in front. Wonder what size engine it would've had? Probably about 65hp? Would they have been running auxillary gearboxes back that far?

The boss has an old truck an tractor collection with several examples from that era.

He'll know what it is,,,,,,,,heck he probably drove it when it was new.

Good one - dunno why the REO name came to mind but I guess I've seen more of them.

If he hasn't already done so your boss needs to visit Richardsons Truck Museum in Invercargill, I'm not a rabid truck fan but I recommend a visit!:yeah:

It does look VERY similar to a late '20's REO, so it had me fooled too, though I can't say I've ever seen a Stuart.
I'll second the Truck Museum visit too, I'm no rabid truck fan either but did enjoy a visit there a few years ago when we were down for a car race meeting at Teretonga.
