Ended up heading to the Wellington Riders ride out to Martinborough. Was OK, not a fan of big groups though - too many people to worry about around you :)

Large group rides are not the best idea for inexperienced riders. You could have given them 10 minutes head start and met up with them later at the stop/meet up points. Would have been safer for them too ...

Not exactly inexperienced, have been riding for 8 years. Maybe I just prefer riding with a smaller group of similar riders with similar experience levels.
I see I've posted in the wrong forum category too :)

Group rides I've found are better if you are near the back. Just in front of the TEC. Any trouble ... and you usually miss it. As opposed to first to hit it.

Agree with that. Had to brake hard to avoid a dog - was well aware of someone behind me coming up quick (if you're reading this, hope you weren't startled). Of course that could happen anywhere at any time, but I've seen what happens in group rides before. Dominoes spring to mind :eek5:

As I said earlier ... let them go and follow a bit later. Even keep the TEC in sight.
