Cold Duck Rally
After much deliberation and thought due to ongoing and increasing difficulties in, organization, legal and sponsorship issues.
COLDDUCK 2013 will not be happening.
After 21 years of repeatedly successful and back to back COLDDUCKS we have ground to a halt due to burgeoning legal and overall cost issues.
Keeping the cost of a rally down to an affordable level for punters and party faithful has always been high on our agenda and building permits (yes we require one now to put up the marquee) professional security guards ( for alcohol fuelled functions catering for more than 500 punters) have all but killed the ‘DUCK/goose.
In the past we have relied upon volunteer workers and club members to man the bar, kitchen and gates. COLDDUCK 2012
was the first year when kitchen staff had to be paid.
These costs along with increased insurance and alcohol costs, permits, and security have made it all but impossible to help a needy charitable organization with our left over cash and that’s what it was all about.
We thank all sponsors past and present, the party faithful who challenged the weather and distances travelled, all the helpers who gave time to volunteer their labour and in so doing put on the 21 years of back to back COLDDUCKS and made it possible for us, as a club, to donate cash to worthy recipients such as The Child Cancer Foundation, Christchurch earthquake appeal, Westpac helicopter, New Zealand Hospice, SPCA, Lowe Walker Helicopter and others.

The New Zealand I grew up in won't exist soon. Only the new sanitised version will.
The club BBQ, cycle race, sailing regatta, bike rally, homemade preserves, nanas pork sausages, all made illegal (or at least realistically illegal) by the safety Nazis.
The kids slide will be closed, the jungle gym is now only 5 ft high, and everybody with a penis is a kiddy fiddler.
My beer will be labelled to tell me its beer aka bad, smokes will be illegal, and I will have to wear a life jacket in the bath.
We will still die. Of boredom I expect.
Thanks to you and the team for putting together some good times, and assembling a bit of loot for charities over the years.

Damn shame.
Are you going to try and resurrect it at some stage?
If your starting point is covering your costs then all is not lost, You could give people the opportunity to donate to charity at point of sale, or entry.
If you made people aware of how closly the event is tied to the charity donation then I would imagine almost everyone would cough up some coin.
well, I wouldn't, Im a tight fucker and I avoid places that happen to be frozen.

Pretty sad state of affairs when something run for charity has to cease, as the cost of compliance makes it no longer viable.
The Cold Duck is one of those things I was going to do 'some day'...I have missed my chance....

Tis the old story.
Make something hard enough to achieve by increasing the effort/expense on the organisers and eventually they won't...
A crying shame, really. As DaveReid says...this is not the NZ we grew up in. I'll add that it's not the NZ we want/ed for our kids and grandkids.

Corporate sponsorship to cover the cost of the marquee?
Limit attendance to 499 to remove the need for security?

Does that mean the Brass Monkey, Cold Kiwi etc will be under similar threat?
This is the way we will loose all our freedoms and liberties, one little cut at a time, all in the name of "Health & Safety"

All rallys with an onlicence have been under threat for 3 or more years ago. Rally goers getting injured on site, riding away in the morning with a skinfull, and crashing etc on the way home are putting rallys at extreme risk.
Not withstanding the cold duck, I think there are other things going on there.

having done in excess of 100 rallys, Im curious to know this...
why did you 'have' to pay staff?
what was your entry fee?
is line one a new and mandatory regulation?
rallys down this way cost 30-35$ and most make a killing

There will obviously be more to it !
Rumours are abundant !
One of the biggest things would have to be, that the same blokes/esses would have been organizing the rally every year (every club has the doers and the sit back and know besters)
Organizing one of these year after year would be a drain on any man/women and after a while become a bloody chore you'd rather not !
First few would be to get started (probably at a loss) next few would be to raise money, buy land, equipment etc, next few would be to cream it yadda yadda , then it gets bigger and bigger every year and becomes a handfull to run, porta loos don't cut it no more so the coin is spent on loos etc
After this many years there would be the issue of club members having had enough of it, then what ? volunteers ? They might enjoy helping for a year or so, but then start thinkin fuck i'm doing this for nix and the club makes money soooo, hey cut me in boys
Sooooo what have we got now, a business yeah ? Wow ok, so tax man becomes involved, then come the beaurocrats (sp) council wants it's cut and puts rules in place so permits are needed ! All of a sudden a rally that no one really wants to organise (but have been doing so for the last few years purely out of respect to the party faithful that have supported year after year) becomes a cunt of an idea !
Me< i know i'd rather not !
This is purely speculation on my part of course, i know nothing !

The age old New Zealand, classic tale.
Divide and conquer.
Many thanks to those who did the hard yards for so long and got B all from it.
I'd like to know this though.
If a piece of dirt came available and if all attendees brought their own grog, and no one counted the numbers entering who'd bloody well care about "fucking permits etc"
Time gentlemen please to go back to being bikers who just do, not people who follow instructions from council arseholes whose only pleasure in life is squeezing the life out of events organised for fun and a bit of a donation to charity!

I like this idea. Really regret nearly making it there last two years... only been once for day visit years ago, done kiwi few times.
Just nominate an 18y/o as the event manager, call it a "Rave" and the cops and council wont come near it. They only shut down the big parties once they get out of control and have heaps of complaints, so done in the right place with good neighbours eg none and people not riding like idiots near the entrance and all will be good.
Top marks to the organisers for past work, these things take way more behind the scenes work than people realise.
Perhaps an annual Cold Duck memorial ride is in order, with 500+ bikes ending up outside council offices. They will probably sit there and wonder why we are not out in the countryside lol

Instead of blaming the councils you could have a thought about the dropkicks that drink waaaay too much and try and ride home without any sleep and get caught.
Over the years I've helped out organize a few things and what kills it for most organizers are the free thinking charmers who decide you cant shut the bar now, I dont need to go to bed, my bike needs a tune up at 4am, wadda ya mean I can't have a meal?(when it says MUST BE PRE ORDERED), fuck the neighbors, fuck the Police, etc etc etc.. It just wears ya down...
Best events I've gone to were organized privately by strong individuals and if you didn't like the way they were doing it you were refunded your fee and escorted off the site then and there and you were black listed forever...

One of the fundamental changes in the nature of an event like this is drinking RTDs.
The alcohol intake is dramatically increased over the old days of drinking beer (4% alcohol per volume for basic beer like Lion Red of Speights, 7 - 9 % ABV for RTDs). The behaviour is very different as a result. Another change is the authorities' insistence that organisers take more responsibility for safety at the events. Add these things together and you have a recipy for someone's balls being on the line.
A third change is that people have less and less available social time - with weekend work and families needing dual incomes. That has reduced the amount of time people are prepared to "give" to events as volunteer workers. People who provide services at events want to be paid, otherwise they would just as soon stay home with the family or enjoy some recreation of their own. Can't blame them for that.
These changes to the fabric of NZ life have had more impact than PC councils etc (although they all play a part.)
I had a role helping the organisers of a big event for about 5 years. It was incredibly successful and well known. But all the things I've mentioned above became more and more of an issue. The 8 pallets of beer that was drunk changed to 5 of beer and 3 of RTDs - effectively doubling the amount of alcohol consumed.
The event owners were incredibly nervous about the court case involving that person killed in a cycle race - in the end the courts found the organisers of the race were not liable for the death of the cyclist but, if you'll remember, events were being cancelled all over the place while the case was heard. People were simply not prepared to take on the risk.
The owners of the event I worked at prepared the event management plan (something that was newly required) and it focused their thinking when everything was down in black and white. On paper. When they added up the cost of the infrastructure, return on investment and the likely potential of them being hung by their balls if someone died, especially if alcohol was involved, they decided it was no longer worth it. Big annual event, drawing about 3000 punters, was no more.
It's a heck of a shame, but that's the way it goes - some long-standing events will stand up to these fundamental changes, others will not.

There's always a way arond those things, the Vincent for example has undergone a shit-load of change (mainly got WAY bigger!) since I first went there (about '93 or so) but still manages to keep going.
But 'people' are noticing, hence the booze-bus staking out the rally the next morning, the paid security guys, requirements for 'qualified' people putting up marquees over a certain size etc.
Rally organisers will have to adapt, be flexible - or the rally will die.

All is not lost: Not far from the small town where the Cold Duck now has laid it's last frozen egg we have the Bay MC One Night Stand. And it is not held at a time of the year when naked males can blame the weather for the lack of tool size...

I've never felt unsafe @ a Biker Rally. :drinknsinwith over 100 rallys under my belt same and only once was there any trouble and that was the Hokanui early 90's where they alowed patchs... never done a north Is rally (cept for hog, guzzi, buell) but Im thinking with the larger gang population they would have more issues than us down er

The Kumeu Swap Meet (North Islands biggest vehicle show/swap meet etc) has banned motorcycles from the dispalys this year - allegedly the Big Red Machine crew (or similar) were flaunting their stuff and cuasing alarm to other punters last year so the easy fix was to ban ALL motorcycle displays.
BTW: Reason for banning is unconfirmed but there IS a ban.

81, Red And White, Big Red Machine. Ways of saying the same thing without spelling it out. And logos/writing supporters can wear.

Read in the local rag there is a 'cold duck' facebook for the demise of the duck, for those that tweet, cluck or quack.

There was no trouble at kumeu by the 81 they where selling some of there support gear,so maybe someone got there nose out of joint and had no balls to ask them to pay for there space as they where selling stuff, its a bit off a piss off as I was going to take two of my custom bikes up there this year but they can get f**ked if I'm going to park them outside and oh yea maybe the police thought we can't have these guys here and told the organisers to stop them being there or we could make it hard for you to hold this event.

WELL SAID THAT MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tis time for a revolution.........
