Hey guys!

Happy New Year!

Anyway I have been searching the forum all evening about VTR1000 fuel issues, ill explain whats happening...

Im having a problem with her cruising at 100-110kph, after aprox 15-20kms along the motorway she starts coughing as if shes out of gas sometimes cutting out forcing me to pull over other times she will rev through it.

I have done afew things to the bike, i have just fitted APE manual cct's, new chain and sprockets.
previos owner did the normal K&N filter (airbox not chopped) gone to 190 main jets and acouple of rowdy remus cans.

when i first got the bike 2 months ago it was excellant but recently its been totaly frustrating!
and ontop of that i have the finacial advisor telling me to stop spending money on it...
love riding but sick of spending money on them... (just had the aprilia rs125 do its top end in also. had to import new piston and barrel from UK)

the bike is
2003 VTR1000F
28500kms

so what do you guys reckon?
valve clearences
blocked breather
carbs need balancing
blocked jets
carbs need an overhaul

Any and all help is very mush appreciated!

Cheers Dan

Sounds like it a fueling issue, first step is to determine whether it is too rich, or too lean. Next time it does it, pull over and pull a plug or two out to see what is going on. Or take pics for us, which will need to be non-blurry, and show the ground strap, electrode, and down into the insulator.

Actually, second thoughts, it sounds fucked, I'll give you 20bucks for it? :shifty:

You forgot ... blocked air filter.
Dud plug(s).
Blocked fuel filter.
Vaccuum valve jammed/not connected properly.

Why go for the hard/expensive one's first .. ???

Fuel tank vent blocked?

Front plug looks good, white on the end.
Rear plug is a little blackened and shiny. Didn't have camera but will take a picture on my days off, air filter doesn't look too bad in my opinion it's a dirty orange colour opposed to a brighter red it I imagine once was.
Will check fuel filter on days off. It doesn't choke up of cut out when you are nailing it or constantly changing amount of throttle.

New development: this morning when started it was allgood, push choke in and idle got really rough and even when took revs up to 2000 the exhaust got very loud and was making more of a popping sound. Wouldn't stay alive when let throttle go, kept dying on me. Left it 5mins and tried again and seem to be okay-ish could this be related?

Trying to give you guys as much info as possible, Im not much of a mechanic but can pull it apart and fix things following a manual.

Again thanks

Dan

Does blacked and shiny mean wet (fuel) or oil fouled do you think?

No fuel pump, gravity feed carburetors.
Umm I'm not sure about the plugs, ill have to look at it again.

Check the tank vent. Vac line to the fuel tap, clean the tap out. Check the filter.
Go from there really

have you done a compression test? also when you are going fast is there anyway that more air could be getting in your carb?

Fella if it was fine before you did anything i would go back to basics,in this case have you checked the timing on both cylinders?

yes there 45mm i think said worlds biggest on prod bike

my car did this of and on all years i owned it just clear run fine
Only did few times in the year, was fuel injected though (mx5)

Might be just dirt in the carbs chould always just if you can turn off the fuel tap and undo the drain the float bowls in each carb
