If you think you have, then try this:
Do it several times for an average result; drugs including alcohol, nicotine etc allowed (as far as the test is concerned anyway!)
- barefoot or socks only allowed
- hopping and other contact shifting is NOT allowed!
- hands by your sides
- unused foot in permanent contact with standing calf

Test:

* Balance yourself carefully on one leg

* Shut your eyes firmly & count the seconds until you have to open them to prevent falling over!

Results:

* More than 30 seconds - you may be the next Superbike World Champion

* Around 10 Seconds - Pretty average for a motorcyclist

* Less than 5 seconds - Have you considered sticking to Cage driving???

I counted all the way to eleventy two, course everything was a little sideways when I opened my eyes, but men are supposed to be shit at multitasking right?

Seriously though, how many people have you tricked into standing on one foot for a few minutes with their eyes closed thinking they are awesome at this rider balance thing?

I don't think I have "tricked" any at the moment. It is surprisingly difficult to do though. I have now added "no footware". (Extra width makes it easier).
I understand the test is genuinely used sometimes to determine loss of balance as one ages. (My turn must be coming!)
I guess it is a bit like the old "walk the white line test" for inebriation. The examiner watches how well you can cope. :) :)

3 min 25 seconds, that was soooo easy, but I must admit, tight rope walking as a youth might have something to do with it

Ok that was slightly harder, and more boring than I thought, still passed 30seconds though. Under no illusions of being the next world super-bike champion though, definitely missing the other requisite skills!

I get tired of counting. I had to do this assessment at Burwood Hospital Spinal unit after my accident. Apparently my body has compensated for my injury as I could do it on either leg without any drama. Never knew I could do, and had never thought about it before the assessment. Still can do it.

Your sense of balance is probably at a higher state of tune than most people, developed over time riding as you do . I always smile with respect when I see you fanging it on the track, Fine balance for you would come without question.

Aw shucks. Yeah my assessment was about 3yrs after the accident and I was told that my balance would be at a higher level than most.

Wierd thing is that if you are wobbly on one leg just touch your finger to your nose and you become more stable. Also if you bend your knee on your standing leg and lift the other in front of you (a la Karate Kid) it helps too...basically lifting it behind you makes you stick your bum out, straighten your standing leg, and unbalances you.

Now for extra fun, balance someone on your hips the same weight as you, lift one leg and then talk for up to one minute as you rock them back and forth and twist around, then flip them up in the air and onto their back with a large thud, all without losing balnce :)

the best way to test your balancing skills for riding a motorcycle, is to ride a motorcycle. If you go to move and you fall off in 5 seconds, you should consider crawling on all fours everywhere, if you fall off around 10 seconds, you should only ride on your driveway, if you fall off in 30 seconds you may venture into the street, but only a block at a time.

11 seconds, both feet, wobbling like shit. I wanted to blame the fact my cerebellum isn't what it should be ;p. But I tried it again, there's a secret- KEEP YOUR HEAD UP! I did 25 seconds on my right foot. and about 12 on my left. The next time 32 seconds on my right and 18 on my left. Does this mean I am a future champ on right hand bends? My left side sucks lol.

I can ice skate (well I used to) and I was all good with that, didn't fall over (well maybe on my first lesson) So I don't see why I should be really shit on a bike. Must say its a good test though!

there's a secret- KEEP YOUR HEAD UP, me thinks this also applies if your riding a sports bike , you will turn right hand corners faster than left hand corners, but you will never be a rossie

No.

By practicing for several hours a week I can eventually improve my balance to the point that I can walk without falling over. At such an extreme state of advanced training I've dabbled in surfing, Judo, skiing and motorcycle trials. Uniformly mid B grade.

Both ankles have been damaged pretty badly, but that's only part of it. Just the way it is I guess.

clearly there are some other requirements... cause that one is too easy for anyone that has grown up doing sports that require balance... and I'm sure as hell not going to end up being the next New Zealand champ let alone world champ!

but yes, I have to admit that I just tested it at 3am...

Interesting range of responses from preening & praise through frustration to abuse! (That's KB!)

Sorry, but I have had to ammend the instructions slightly. The intention is that balance should be maintained by ONLY ankle and foot muscle flexing. It is much easier if arms or the unused leg are spread out from body to provide inertia assistance. (Good training maybe.)

FWIIW I struggle to manage better than 10 seconds, but I am fairly sure I have missed out on any chance to be a Superbike champ now. A peaceful death in bed after a long ride the day before looks a better long term goal! Seems to be a bit of a Superbike Rider application line-up forming anyway, and I hate queues.

Guess I will just park up the Zimmer frame & practice some more! :) :) :)

I remember back in the day when i played rugger, and had issues with my back, the team physio would get me to stand on one foot and if i couldn't stand he would do the back crunch thing and twist my neck till it crunched then put some weird vibrating electric thing on my back for half an hour or so. After that my balance came right again. Something to do with out of line pelvis or something, apparently caused by a kick or hard side on tackle, or bad body position in scrums(prop).

Maybe you fullas and fullesses who can't do it just need your pelvises aligned proper.
