View Full Version : Holy Cow!

I live in a fairly rural area and have become used to dodging things that stray into my path such as chickens, ducks and dogs. Today I had a bit of a bigger problem. At about 80kph I crested the brow of a hill to find a herd of cows blocking the road. I'm breaking with the front break, pulsing and trying not to lock up. The space between me and the cows is closing rapidly, I'm moving to the left of the road where the herd is thinner and I'm thinking I'm going to have to take my chances on the grass. Miraculously, the cows seem to part out of my way and I think I might just get past them. But no, one of the beasts decides to fill the space left by its buddies. We collide and I'm on my back in the grass.
The farmer and a passing motorist run over to see if I need help. Remarkably, I'm fine, just a bit shook up.
The KLR650 has a broken front right fairing, a few bits of grass growing in the foot pegs and some scuff marks on the crash bars and rear panniers. But that's pretty much all the damage I can see. I ride it and it sounds the same and runs the same as before.
What Im wondering is what I should do next? Do I take it to a garage to get looked over? I am insured, but the farmer offered to pay for the work in cash. Anyone got any advice (of the constructive sort ;) )?
Thanks
BigAl

Price the parts and take the cash, will save any excess, mucking around and higher premiums.
You are meant to be able to stop in the distance that you can see unfortunately.:(

Next time try the brakes. They'll stop you quicker.
Ps: How do you know the cows name?

Newbie question - why did you only use the front brake? Would you have not come to a quicker stop if you'd used the back too? Not criticising, genuine question as to whether there was some reason you weren't able to use the back one. Oh and I'd do what BigAl said too...
Is the cow ok?

Tell the cops so it is recorded and tell your insurance.
Thats why you pay them isnt it?

Is the cow ok?
Hopefully still whole?
Glad you and your bike are mostly OK though, I'd go by the book via cops and insurance in case something not-so-obvious comes up.

I'd like to second that you should have used your brakes.

re: rear brakes, i suspect this was gravel, not many people walk cows on seal,
and while a rear wheel lockup (it'll lock up quicker cos the weights going forward with the front brake) CAN help you slow down, there's a bigger chance you'll hit a nice big bit of shit and your bike will decide to have a lie down, maybe ankle-tap some bovine.
cows weigh a few hundy kilo, ankle-tapping one with a motorbike while under it -not a good idea.
but with a bike like that i'd'a just poped the clutch and wheelied over the cunts.

How could you possibly wheelie when you must always have 1 hand on your cock because you are the biggest wanker around?

Did your bike bounce into the grass too? doesn't sound like there was much damage so just a cash job to replace the plastics would suffice. However, you need to be confident this is the case, if not, take it to a shop and tell them what happened.

You have never ridden a klr have you?
And for the op.
Just fix the fairings, the klrs are as tough as old boots, and cresting the brow of a hill in a rural area at speed is not a flash idea.

what should you do next?
step one, think back and ask yourself if there was any signage suggesting their might be stock crossings in the area that could have alerted you to such an occurrence.
Step two, whether the answer to step one is a yes or a no, deny vehemently that there was any sign, threaten to sue the farmer, and blame the cow for not having learnt to look both ways before crossing the road and causing an accident
step three, post on KB about what cunts farmers all are. Its the KB way.
Ok constructive advice - take it to a shop and get it looked over. as long as your frame or forks arent bent and your brakes et work fine, then youll be fine. cosmetic damage isnt a biggy, but bent forks and twisted frames etc can be a serious issue - get it looked at

True, but the farmer is still responsible for warning motorists of animals on the road, if he'd had a guy (in hi-viz) slowing down vehicles that would be different.

The farmer is probably worried that if it gets reported and he diddnt have any warning out he could be prosecuted so is offering to pay cash but could offer cos he's a good cunt:lol:
