They detect based on what your phone requests. Changing it to "desktop" makes your phone browser send its request as a non mobile browser rather than "mobile". There is no accurate way of knowing if you are on 3G or not via an HTTP request (because that would entail mobile providers giving all web site designers and hosting companies a list of IP addresses that they allocate to mobile devices).

nah got it in the end, didn't have to uninstall drivers. (got BT ones anyway, not winblows generic) it's just a matter of making sure the right winblows services get started when i want them. ><

still can't USB tether, even when had the nokia suite installed with cable driver etc. so i'm on a mighty .6Mbps. (in theory phone is capable of 10) with no nokia suite installed.

Are you using you using a mobile as your 3G modem? If so that could be the reason - your being identified on the mobile network as a mobile device. I´ve never had that issue running using an external network or USB 3G modem - although I always assumed it was the browser that identified itself as a mobile device version?
