Learner licence expiry (6L) - two different expiry dates

I have a full class 1, learners class 6 licence. The expiry date on the front (4b.) is in 2016 however the Class 6L Learner Licence expiry on the back is in 2014 (licence issued in 2006).

Can anyone tell me why there are two different dates? I thought there was no expiry date on learner/restricted licences except the usual 10-year expiry date on the licence? Does my 6L licence expire in 2014? The licence issue date is also 2006.

While I'm at it, can someone suggest the type of bike I'd be looking at if my goal was to pass my restricted licence (and maybe occasionally ride to work from St. Johns to Penrose in Auckland)? Something like a GN250 I assume? Haven't ridden a bike since doing my BHS in 2006.

re: restricted license, consider getting some tuition from an instructor before you sit it?

I have a Ginny, lots of people here do, good runabout and then some, for someone with limited experience such as myself :) anything specific you wanna know about it?

The learner license will expire on that date. You need to get to get your restricted by then. Otherwise ... a start from scratch again. (learner license only)

As far as bikes go .... any idea of a budget .. ???

The dates are different as you didn't get both licenses on the same day, hence they expire at different times. The worst part is having a giant LEARNER on the top of your license when you have a full in the class that you need...

I have a GN250, it’s been completely reliable and enjoyable so far. I used it on my restricted test and passed with flying colours. With the new LAMs rules I’d suggest a bike with more power.

My biggest frustration with the GN is headwind. With a strong headwind I can be down to 75kph on the motorway which isn’t fun. I have 14 months to go before I can sit my full, headwinds-in-all, I still think I’ll keep the GN until I can buy a bike with decent power. So, they can’t be that bad!

Get your bike checked before you buy it. They’re bullet-proof but they need regular servicing to keep running properly.

Oh, and they cost bugger-all to run.

You are limited to a set time on learners/restricted class. Before it expires ... you have to resit. If you don't ... start from scratch again.

An alternative to ... (or as well as) a small screen (as bosslady has) ... is fitting short flat(er) handlebars (as on sport bikes) This gives better control in the wind. Leaning forward slightly/more means less for the wind to catch. It also reduces flex and vibration in the bars ... that GN's are well known for.

Wouldn't think so, would be like putting a sail on the front of your bike? I do live in Wellington, and we do get strong wind.

my understanding is that you can continue to renew your learner or restricted licence when they expire. You don't have to go back to scratch. There was an announcement two days ago, that said that learner and restricted licences will have a final time to reach the next stage, and if you haven't moved on to the next stage, then you will lose that licence.
Hasn't come in yet though.
Gn250 is a great bike, but again is underpowered on the motorway. A 400 or 500 is more stable and suited for motorway work.
As someone else said, get some training before your restricted.
Worth it. I have a school bike gn250 that you could use whilst training.

That has confused a few cops before, too. I've had to point it out before to them a several times.

Wouldn't think so, would be like putting a sail on the front of your bike? I do live in Wellington, and we do get strong wind.

A small one as she has on HER bike (check it out in the photo album on her profile page) does help. Even INTO a head wind. More comfortable for the rider too.

my license was due to expire a few years back with 6l and 1.when they renewed both dates are the same and the 6l has now been on there for 12 years,like others have said though they are due to bring in time limits i believe

Yup, no current time limit to complete to restricted or full licence, and no idea of when an expiry will be implemented. I know students who have been on their 6L for 20 years!!!!
