Hi all. I recently bought a pack rack;
276272

And am wondering will just any kind of top box of any size fit on this? Thinking a givi or similar, secondhand off tardeme.

I did search the forum quickly, can't find anything that relates to my specific question.

Cheers..

I don't think you'll find a top box (hard plastic thing) that will fit on a Ventura pack rack, unless there is anything made by Ventura. Generally Ventura make fabric bags that fit on the pack racks such as this 276281

That's not to say you couldn't get one to fit with a bit of No. 8 wire

Actually you can, I have one one my ventura rack.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/parts-for-sale/panniers-luggage/auction-551107411.htm

Comes with a plate that bolts on to the rack, easier if you have the short back on it.

Cheap as chips too.

Do you have that exact one? How are you finding it?

Yeah I do, works great, locks securely. fits my helmet and jacket. Totally waterproof. All good really.

I love the 'motorbike not included' bit in that ad. Pretty cool topbox. Would be great on my little GN, too. But is it really that secure?

hmmmm yes... I kinda just wanted one for if I was going to go away... but would have my normal sissy on most other times and just use my backpack if I had to... I just wonder you know, plastic gets brittle over time eh? hmmm

I have had one on my bike for ages. I used to have a pack-rack and bag. It served me well.

But ...
1. It wasn't entirely waterproof.
2. It wasn't lockable.
3. It was easily removed from the frame.

Steps can be taken to reduce issues with 1. But the others were a hassle to rectify.

Most topboxes are UV resistant ... and take a bit of punishment.

They are/seem bulky ... but I wouldn't be without mine.

They are quick and easy to remove from the plate if you don't need it. I fit mine on just in case I may need it.

The boxes are lockable ... and locked on the plate. A KEY is required for both actions. And locks can be changed.

Remember though ... locks only keep out honest people. Those that want in ... and have the appropriate tools to achieve this ... WILL. But is usually obvious that their actions are not legal ....

Good advice. Mine is fine, locks to plate and locks shut. Does make you wonder why the givi one is $300 more.

Mine carries my gear to work every day and hasn't leaked in over a year of wellington weather.

Actually ... it doesn't rain here in paradise ... so I'm not sure mine is still waterproof. I might have to take a ride up the west coast to test it. :innocent:

I used to have a san remo top box on my ventura pack rack (had a metal base plate that enabled adapting to fit to a pack rack). From memory i had to use the 'sports rack' attachment to enable the lid on the top box to tilt back. Was pretty secure & never got blown off in the Welly winds + never leaked.

Top boxes are the business for commuting, lockable & waterproof :niceone:

fwiw, get the biggest one you can afford, you can never have enough storage space.

My top box ......

And Tank bag .....

Camera and phone (and snack/drink) in the tank bag. easily carried when off the bike.

Room for two helmets in the Top box. Or my helmet and jacket.

Mine was one of those cheap trademe ones from that seller. The small one was fine on my 250. After a fast ride when I got home all i had left was bits of the mount....

My Givi one has survived a run quite a bit faster than 150 km/hr. (on a closed and private road of course :innocent:)

Maybe that says more about the way you mounted it, mine has survived fine at speed.

My setup, I found the reflectors weren't up to much so added some Hi Viz tape. I can still slide the Ventura pack on to the sport rack on the seat behind me. works a treat for me.

Yeah .. I've used Ventura gear since the mid 1980s .. and still do .. yeah .. all of the above ..( and there are D rrings which can be used to paddlock the bag to the frame and padlock the zips ... )

However I've gone past 240 klicks with a Ventura bag on the back (with stuff in it) ... but the bikes I've had with top boxes have had messed up handling past 130 klicks .. even with the top box empty ...

I'l take the Ventura gear any day ..

I have a SHAD 40 litre top box, so far it's been great, bought for around $180, seems a little more robust than the similarly priced Givi I had before it and just as functional. Not sure if anyone else has mentioned them but might be another option for you...

I've been past 220 km's with no issues. (with a topbox. Same with the pack rack and bag)

Well me Givi is mounted the same way and has done 20000ks just fine, some of which may have been somewhat faster than the speed limit.

But im looking for a 45 or 50 ltr now.
