On Saturday morning, with piles bleeding, I arrived at McDonald Motor Trimmers in Tauranga to let Mac ply his craft upon the Z1000's suboptimal seating arrangements.
"They don't put much foam on these and it's way too soft," Mac diagnosed.
I couldn't disagree. After about 6,000km astride this machine my arse had not adapted one jot to its brutality.
The previous day I had ridden up from Wellington, a distance of about 550km. Buttocks did well until about Ngongataha, at which stage of the journey they had had more than enough, requiring more than a little coaxing to get them to journey's end in Tauranga.
Mac was quickly into things. Foam on the rider's seat was replaced with something more accommodating. The rear perch was also increased in significance to make it more endearing for a back seat passenger. Fitment was finalised and new coverings applied.
A couple of hours later we were off and away to the apostrophe capital of New Zealand (Whakatane) for a bite of lunch.
A few hundred km later, and improvement is noticeable. It's still early days yet. As I have learned from past experiences with seat modifications, relief is not instant.
However I am confident that the Z1000 is now more of a touring bike then it was previously.
