View Full Version : Sir Paul who? Knighthoods.

Does Paul Holmes deserve a knighthood? Does anyone in this day and age?
Personally I think these 'honours' are a left over relic from another time. A payback for old mates?
The titles given to the nz honours that labour bought in were given such gooble de gook names that they meant nothing to me.

Knighthoods.....
They should only be for those who have given, SERVICE TO HUMANITY!!!!! - not paid entertainment, or weath driven top of the ladder business type
What value exactly, does an "honour" bestowed on you by a bunch of lying, cheating, double dealing, snout in the taxpayers pockets, politicians have anyway?

Paul Holmes receiving a flippen Knighthood? This is a sad day for New Zealand.
Services to broadcasting?
This man was the highest paid Government employee for many a year, he clearly did it for the money, if not he would have never taken the roles he did, and instead reported unbiased stories to show his integrity, instead of fronting a show that had major car manufacturers as sponsors (who pulled their cash and brand when he went too far in one of his many racial tirades (because I was "tired" he blubbed)
Services to broadcasting are different to living fat off taxpayers hard earned, and if raising a Meth addicted teen is a pre request for honors these days, then there are a few dudes in West Auckalnd that should be higher up the list.
He was a constant buffoon, crashing aircraft that us plebs could only dream of sitting in, let alone own, paid for from his far too generous pay packet, that we had no choice in either who it went to, or how much he was paid.
The poison Gnome now wants us to hold him in our hearts, now that his Ass cancer has come back "aggressively"..... Weeeellllllll, Pauly boy, all your money can't save ya now huh, you want to be remembered as a "nuggety bugger" huh?, sorry pal, I will remember you as a weasely little piss stain that stood high and mighty and passed judgment on many a person, the whole time your little girl was sucking head hunter cock for P, your son was being bullied at school for having a shit sister, you had a pathetic affair with a girl too young to even remember the original A Team, and the whole time smugly took Millions fro the public purse.

A working class hero is something to be
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
When they've tortured and scared you for twenty-odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear

The irony of it BB. Lennon was making a valid statement however, according to Chapman his killer, he made himself out to be a too holier than thou over the years (and more popular than Jesus according to a quote in a newspaper) so he killed him.

Homws'ey is a rather tall poppy it would seem.
Lots of us obviously don't like him one little bit.
I never used to, far too opinionated.
Knew it all.
Spoke funny and could never hold a train of thought.
However over the last few years I've seen Paul Holmes become a proper father, someone who has used his not too insignificant influence to help others, namely Westpac Rescue ( the same guys who usually come along to pick up broken motorcyclists) The Para Olympians and many others who are in his debt for many tens of thousands of dollars, man hours and other less tangible things.
While money and influence should not mean someone is knighted.
Deeds most definitely should.
Yes there are others perhaps more deserving, but it's the system we have and I'd much rather see Holmsey get his gong before he pops off than many other notable fraudsters and shiets who most definitely have done absolutely sod all for me,mine or the general public at large.
I'd piss on him if he was on fire, go out of my way to shake his hand, probably not, wish him dead? Na.
He's done his best to pay it forward, knowing he has little time left he's gone even harder to help others, you barstards can't take that away from him.
on Ya Sir Paul, far as I'm concerned you have earned the right. I'd happily greet you with the words , hello Sir Paul, you rascal.

Wow, so much bitterness towards a dying man because he has been acknowledged for trying to be good at something. Maybe everyone should be mediocre in life.
A man who found a career he enjoyed, work hard at it, became popular for it, and oh how horrible, he got paid well while doing it. Personally I didn't like his shows much or his style or attitude. But I wouldn't deny him a simple acknowledgement that he 'poked his head above the trenches' and gave it a go. There are lots of famous sports people that iritate us, but that still doesn't mean we can't admit they have outstanding skills/talent at whatever it is.
So many scum bags waste oyxgen and taxpayers money. Look at the arsehole mob at Kawhia egging on a worthless parasite crim to attack a Policeman so they would be gratified with violence as entertainment. I doubt Sir Paul ever did anything remotely harmful like that to anyone. We are surrounded by examples of bad people doing bad things. We need positive examples of good, there aren't many to savour unfortunately. But lets hate Paul Holmes and wish him dead because he got rich doing a job he liked and had the gall to help others at times on the way.
All sorts of jobs have accolades for those that excelled. Like Actors get Oscars. Singers get awards, industries have awards, exporters get awards and so on. Why shouldn't we have knighthoods so we can TRY and award those who do good as a positive reinforcement of behaviour we deperately need more of. Or should we all join the Kawhia mob and be nothing but negatives hating all that dare do better than mediocre.
Congrats Sir Paul

In April 2000 the new Labour Prime Minister Helen Clark announced that knighthoods and damehoods were abolished, and the order's statutes were amended accordingly. Between 2000 and 2009, the two highest awards were called Principal Companion (PCNZM) and Distinguished Companion (DCNZM), and recipients did not receive the title "Sir" or "Dame"
In 2009, Prime Minister John Key restored the honours to their pre-April 2000 state. Principal Companions and Distinguished Companions (85 people in total) were given the option to convert their awards into Knighthoods or Damehoods. The restoration was welcomed by the Monarchy New Zealand. The option has been taken up by 72 of those affected, including rugby great Colin Meads. Former Labour MP Margaret Shields was one of those who accepted a Damehood, despite receiving a letter from former Prime Minister Helen Clark "setting out why Labour had abolished the titles and saying she hoped she would not accept one"

Hillary made a large portion of his life about giving service to humanity, shame it wasn't in New Zealand, but nevertheless, he was of BENIFIT TO MANKIND!, the rest, glory (Blake) or riches seeking self serving business tycoons.
A knighthood of genuine value, of genuine honour, should be beyond the reach of money or political influence.

Holmes is no exception, he has made more than his share of faux pas over the years, I believe his knighthood has merit, more so than a depressed ex All black.
It must be a very very tough time for his family and friends at the moment, seeing a loved loose his/her battle with a cancer, is the worst thing.......ever.

Good on Ya Maha and add to that through his tenacity & determination he bought his daughter back from near total destruction, many succumb to that bloody drug, all the charity work he has done in recent years, more than I bet 99.9% of those who have shown total disrespect for a fellow human being and his family who are travelling a dark dark road at present. I don't much care for his style of journalism, stopped watching him after his Dennis Conner stunt, but admire the way he has gone about his life in general.

I wonder how long he'll keep generating "news" and comment now that he's departed; surely he'd love the fact that even after his death he will still be a topic worthy of ongoing discussion on the interdweeb and around the water cooler... Ya know, in show biz there ain't any such thing as bad publicity

No - thats not fair. Most have said that they strongly dislike the man's approach but hardly anyone actually rejoices in his death or the manner of it. I don't like him but take no pleasure in his suffering.
Go volunteer in a Hospice. In fact go into any Hospice in NZ and you come across bigger tragedies in people you have never head of lives. Its not especially amazing what happened to him. If he was not a media personality you wouldnt be any the wiser.
There is a tendancy not to speak ill of the dead. Fair enough but Paul Holmes always spoke his mind regardless of convention. I kind of think he would expect people to be honest about their feelings at this time as well.

Yes, it is fair. Quite a few of them have rejoiced in his personal suffering and mocked his efforts to acknowledge the mistakes he made and the pain he caused people. This thread has simply confirmed for me that the vast majority of KBers are uncaring bastards with little regard for people who don't meet their artificial standards. You know, not motorcyclists, not independently wealthy, not completely capable as contributing members of society, (even though the following has nothing to do with Paul Holmes still is indicative of the tenor of KB), not foreign, you know, not perfect as they see it.
Kiwis are far too happy to bludgeon people into stereotypes so they can abrogate any responsibility for their behaviour and the effect it may have on others.

I thought it seemed like the modern version of tall poppy syndrome (the ruling elite reference made possible in 2011/12) That's kiwi's aye, take a man down at the knees, even worse when he's on his way out.
Not saying I liked the guys media style either, I didn't! But, I certainly respect what he did and what he overcame - like showing people that Aids was ok and allowing young Eve to continue her battle with Aids without condemnation. Like surviving through at least 4 (one being the fatality of his colleague) air crashes.
Uncovering facts in the Erebus crash and gaining closure for the families..
Promoting charities, notably the Paralympics for 20 years and the Stellar Trust, fighting meth use. and that's off the top of my head.
And finally, being man enough to explain and make peace with who he was and what he'd done, before passing. He deserved his Knight hood much more than others do, IMHO

Totally Wrong !!! It's a totally Marxist analysis of his role in society as a media functionary - a person responsible for maintaining the dominant hegemony of our society ... i.e. maintaining the dominant ideology ... and therefore a functionary of the ruling elite - who was rewarded by being given a knighthood so he symbolically joins their ranks ... (Oh, and as a substantial property owner and manfucturer he does qualify as Petite Bourgoisie/Capitalist - the knighthood just removes the "petite" )
And a member of the Fourth Estate - you now - the Lords Temporal, The Lords Spiritual, the Commons - and the Fourth Estate is the media .. an estate not generally erecogtnised as having power (Unlike the other three) but wth heaps of power non-the-less.
Nothing "tall poppy" about that - a purely Marxist/Anarchist-based sociological analysis of his position and power in New Zealand Society ... I do admire tall Poppies (Edmund Hilary/John Britten/Titokowaru/Earnest Rutherford/Frank Bateson at al) ... I do not admire members of the ruling and their tools and lapdogs !!!

I see what you are saying but I disagree. Just 'cos hes Paul Holmes and dying does not mean I need to forgive him anything. If the boot was on the other foot I doubt he would be one jot repentant and he would be into me boots and all for one extra rating point so frankly I doubt the sincerity. I've known people who are genuine saints compared to him and who died three times more horribly and got fuck all. Its easy for the rich to be generous but when a poor man gives you everything he can that means something else.
The difference is hes a media figure and thus has access to a zillion more ears than I do.
Yes Kiwis bludgeon some people. Usually these are people who have behaved poorly and then accuse everyone of this tall poppy syndrome when they find out that no - the great unwashed don't think you are super amazing actually. I don't think it actually exists. Some successful people like ARE not very nice - poppies have fuck all to do with it.
I'm not an uncharitable person (or I like to think I'm not) but I see no reason to change an opinion I have held for a long time because of a pretty everyday passing.

The views and attitudes expressed here may or may not have been held by the real person on the keyboard at some time in the past 57 years ... they may or may not be the current views of the real person on the keyboard ... or they may be only a part of the views the real person holds ...

I agree. I'm not so fussed on Knighthoods etc. as there are so many unsung heroes in this world who perform incredible feats of courage and humanity every day, but to suffer and die in this manner truly is horrible and I have lost friends and family this way. My Father-in-law was scared stiff of dying and despite being very anti- religious all his life, insisted on our daughter reading to him from the Bible every day.

Furry Muff! I'm not into the Marxism theories, myself. Perhaps I don't know enough to understand them. Perhaps I used think that way as a young'un before I realised certain things about the world.
I'm all about critical thinking - question everything. I'm also all about people that are real and make an effort in our society. Some have the ability and infamy to enact or cause change and recognised for it, some seek or lack neither and are not.
I think you'll find amongst your list there are some names with some rather well known history, in relation to how they've treated people in the past, too.

Damn you lot, we've just lost another human being who actually managed to do more good than harm in his own lifetime, who stood for downtrodden and poor, who made life a little more bearable for many who could not get a simple hello from our own govt agencies.
Ask The para Olympians who got them to the games, ask Westpac rescue who made it possible for their choppers to simply take to the air, ask the cancer society who for as many years as he's been famous has made significant contributions in both time, money and personal sacrifice, since well before he was ever ill.
This man didn't do anything by halves, he fucked up, he made us laugh and he made us gasp with his audacity and sometimes his stupidity, throughout it all he maintained his own life rules, he helped as many as he physically could, he knew he couldn't help them all, he knew fame and fortune didn't mean he could fix the worlds ills, still he tried and he never stopped trying.
R.I.P Sir Paul.
Time to have a wee rest, me ol mate.
For the record, I didn't like Paul Holmes for a very long time, he held views which I could not agree with, he championed people who should never have been allowed here ( Ahkmed shit face for one), he was anti gun ( until it came time to shoot the birds at his olive ranch) he learned by his mistakes something we've all had a good go at.
Throughout it all he evolved and he grew stronger and better able to make his people see his own failings and his way of dealing with things that happen to him as they happen to everyone else.
Paul Holmes is/was a damn good kiwi bloke.
he stood and was counted when it came to his own and I for one changed my entire outlook on Sir Paul Holmes after seeing him stand beside his daughter( don't you barstards even dare, she's his as sure as night follows day, I know some fantastic guys who's kids are not their own, but who would die for them without thought) in public court and when I saw him stand tall in a public courtroom and ask a judge for his daughters life back, when he promised to do everything he could for her.

While I'll agree your post has some validity as that kinda thing happens in human nature - this thread was going on well before he passed away.

When I started this thread it was raising the issue of Knighthoods and other titles being relevent today. Paul Holmes was an example ( in my opinion ) of a knighthood, that was not justified.
I never liked the mans' tv shows, but on radio talkback he could atually give a good balanced debate. ( at times)
I found him a lot more plausible as his career developed,
I have had both parents die of cancer, a terrible death, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
What this thread has degenerated into is a prime example of why some threads should be canned after page 3.

You are correct - this is ridiculous. The hyperbole in the media for one of their own vastly exceedes his standing. If's just another case of the media blowing up their own to inflate their position. They have gone from reporting the news to being the news. Headline like 'Good Night Brave Knight' and 'Angel Eve guiding Holmes Through'? Please.... Guiding him through what?
The whole point is that we are ALL entitled to express an opinion. NOT just the media but all of us and to devolve our right to an opinion to the media only is a bad thing. Paul Holmes never shrank from expressing one and if he didnt like something he was not unbiased - you knew about it. Effectively he acted as a social judge and wasnt worried about the down stream affects on peoples lives. I'm completely un appologetic about this. In my world view just saying 'whoops sorry' once you suddenly need to clear you own concience isnt changing a damn thing and doesnt make the guy a saint or a knight.
In my world view leaving your second wife and child for a 25 year old does NOT qualify you as the voice of the nation. I find it offensive. I don't care but I do have an opinion about it and if Paul Holmes was reporting on me acting as he did in his private life he would have NO problem questioning my morality....
Yeah - he got cancer and no one would wish that on anyone. I've had brush with cancer myself ffs - its not funny but it didnt change anything in my past either.
