I'm getting off the Picton Ferry at about 10pm next Friday night and I need 1 nights accomodation there before heading off into the wildnerness the next morning.

Can anyone recommend somewhere really cheap in Picton to stay?

I've stayed here a few times - it's cheap, it's clean and comfortable - it's within walking distance of the food places and the bars .. I'd recommend you get a room rather than share a dormitory

In the park. Sleeping bag, plus good inflateable mat, tucked inside good bivy bag, to keep moisture at bay. cheep as.:msn-wink:

Not the cheapest, but very nice, I use Tombstone Backpackers. If you want the cheapest option, go for dorm, but I go for rooms, because of the gear I carry (downside of being in IT). Breakfast (and homemade scones) included.

I'm not saying they are the cheapest, but the cabins that are about 200 m down the road from the ferry were very accommodating to me arriving at midnight and leaving at 6am on one of my trips down there. Also stayed at the top 10 holiday park, when I didn't have any bedding etc, which seemed reasonable, but both are not in the centre of town

the blue something in Waikawa bay

yeah it is the blue anchor holiday park.

we had cabins (twelve people going to the QCW with mountainbikes) and stayed a night both ways. Good times. Its in Waikawa so a wee bit out of picton but you could throw a stone from one end of the whole town to the other so that is no biggie.

If you fall in love with the place i have a client with a section up there that would be sold cheap.

THanks for all the suggestions

I'm just after a mattress I can crash on for 8 hours and then be off again. I might try a hostel if they take old buggers.

If I am by myself, I just curl up in my sleeping bag inside the plastic tube thingy at the kids playground just next to the wharf. Cheap as fuck, just gotta get out before any kiddies come along.:Punk:

Met the oldest backpacker ever in a hostel in Picton a few years ago. An 80 something guy who had been backpacking on and off for the last 10 years or so.

Sequoia Lodge in Picton is a really nice place. Not too expensive if you don't mind staying in a dorm. I was lucky, I had a dorm to myself there right before Christmas. :)
And no one cares how old you are in backpackers. I spent two years a different hostels in NZ and Australia and you really meet all kinds of people. Which is the best thing about hostels.

Smack a policeman in the head. A night in the cells is pretty cheap. The fine for assaulting a member of Her Majesty's Sworn Constabulary, however, does come at a cost. But you don't have to code that to accommodation.

They wont put you in the cells if you ask them, if you have not been arrested. Tried it in Taihape years ago.:niceone:

You don't want him there, he's developed a taste for woodstocks

While I'm here..... Any recomendations for cheap accommodation in Wellington ? I don't mind backpackers but I'm a little past the dorm thing. I'll arrive about 10:30 ish depending on which ferry I can get on.
