RRRR 2013 (Round Ruahine Range Ride), 23-24 March

Date = March 23rd and 24th

Start = Dannevirke 9.30am (or meet somewhere along the way)

Saturday = Hawkes Bay gravel and beaches (and hopefully a few little surprises TBC).

Stay = Westshore Holiday Park or Westshore Inn (Napier). Restaurant and pub available.
http://www.westshoreholidaypark.co.nz/
http://www.westshoreinn.co.nz/

A fairly rugged camping option is also being discussed.

Sunday = Gentle Annie (possibly a few side tracks), Taihape, south following close to the range, Takapari, Ashhurst, whatever.

Distance = 600km ish

If we get good weather, there will be spectacular views. Bring a camera.

This will be a leisurely ride with many stops. 60% winding seal, 40% gravel, oh....and a wee bit of sand.

Makairo track is currently closed and Coastal Stations are out this year, so this will be a bit more big bike friendly then the previous couple of years.

Those that complete the whole loop will get a complimentary bottle of 'Bart's Brew'. :drinknsin:

I'll add to this first post as more info becomes available. Perhaps we should re-visit the camping option???

Calendar over here. Please sign up so I've a rough idea of numbers.

It's roughly the same weekend. Seems to coincide with the equinox the last few years.

It's difficult this year to get the tides right for the beach section, so we'll be heading straight for the beach first thing.

I know I'm likely in the minority, but I'm keen for some wilderness camping...
On my first RRRR a few years back we got rained off getting to the campsite by the hot springs after coming down the gentle annie (I havent got a clue what it was called), No one else was keen to get wet feet at the river (I only realised once I was across - but you got a cool pic of me riding back) so we headed to the motorcamp instead. Would be good to head for there again for the overnight stop?

Like I said, I'm probably in the minority...

Mangatutu Hot Springs. Free camping, but it's fairly basic. It was getting fairly late in the day that last time. We'd be going the other way this time, so likely to get wet feet early Sunday, unless we backtrack all the way to Napier. I'm half keen if the weathers fine.

Could be interested in making it along to this, and also camping, if the rest of the route isn't to rough. I still need to learn not to pack the kitchen sink when camping off the bike.

You could always put your sausages in the exhaust side panier bag. Then you wouldn't have to worry about fire wood.

Would 2 up on the 990 be okay?

No probs this year. With the Makairo track out, the toughest thing will be Takapari (if we get time and the weather's good), and the beach bit, but the sand is reasonably hard at low tide, so won't be an issue.

Wasn't your fault. I thought tail end Charlie knew where we were going. I learnt something after that little cock up.

If the group gets large, I might have a go at route sheeting the ride so everyone can go at their own pace.

Hmmm....another bald tyre challenge is it? I've got a half worn death wing in the shed just waiting to be shredded.

I'm up for the camping thing. Camp cooker and a tin of beans sounds like me....if the weather co-operates. Shouldn't be a problem based on the weather we've had lately.

We'll be crossing the river and coming out River Road to Taihape Road (intersection with Glenross Road) on Sunday morning. You could go down River Road and meet at the river (public access through farm land). Unsure of time at this stage, but we'll probably get away earlyish, so 9.00 at the river?

You know it's not good when a rear Karoo and a mich t63 front both struggle to get a warrant...

By the way where is the southern meet up point this year to start the ride? That gas station near the manawatu gorge?

Last time we had a couple of meeting points and it got a little confusing. Because the Makairo is out, we'll meet in Dannevirke. Either my place or just up the road at the BP, south end of town.

You should come along Paul, I'm a 90% certainty for this ride, although I'll probably miss out the knarly farm bits as it will be the start of a week away for me, so I'll be loaded up with all my camping gear unless I decide to head to the south island after the RRRRR.

Keeping with tradition, this'll be totally different to previous RRRR's. I like to mix things up a bit each year, but keep within the brief of doing a lap of the Ruahines.

We're doing the beach section and some awesome farmland that Wade's sorted out. Stuff you'd never usually get to access.

It sound's like camping is the go. There aren't many creature comforts at the hot springs, but bring your togs and a tent. Free camping at it's best.

Softies can stay about an hour away in Napier. We're looking at meeting up with a few on the Sunday morning. We might head up a few side roads off the Gentle Annie and take the interesting route to Taihape (Shitbag track anyone?). South to Apiti and take a look up Takapari.

You gotta stop buying those cheap arse tyres dude. If the brand name is misspelt then you know it won't be much good! Unless you ride a hongda I suppose...;)

I did the air filter yesterday and repacked the muffler, there was bugger all of any use left in there and I was starting to get a headache after 7kms of riding to work! Big difference now- takes almost 12kms:killingme

I decided to leave my 1/2 worn tyres on (who am I kidding- more like 4/5ths) and I'm considering an oil change, just considering at this stage...

I'm in, probably head up sometime on Friday but not sure if I can sneak away from work early yet.

The river levels of the Tutaekuri River the one we cross are monitored by the HBRC at a couple of places over here: http://data.hbrc.govt.nz/hydrotel/cgi-bin/hydwebserver.cgi/points/details?point=61 and http://data.hbrc.govt.nz/hydrotel/cgi-bin/hydwebserver.cgi/points/details?point=202

Bart have you a bit more of a route/timetable established for those of us that can't make dannyvegas and want to tag along for parts of the ride?
Was up Makehu saddle other week, DRY as up there, (posted couple pics weatherwatch FB page) road in good shape just a few bike sized potholes to watch out for in the tight stuff and bit of tarbleed also. Some messy patch up loose metal jobs north of rissington also.
You'll probably have to stop and open/close one gate, some cattle grazing up there at moment.
Cheers hope to catch up with you all at some stage.

I have to do a few minor repairs to the Ruffy before wof and reg so I will stick to the road for a while and get some kms done.

Great ride again Bart:yes:
Left a bit earlier than most of the others today and headed home from Taihape. I was pretty bushed after all the riding since Friday afternoon when I left Pram. I'm sure it was fun on the Takapiri and all the gravel to get there - next time...

Highlights for me:-
Beach racing the kids round the oval, the motox was cool too! Once a racer....
Too many great roads - gravel, bush tracks and seal - to pick a favourite, but maybe the fast gravel down to taihape, Hmmm love those feet up power slides, makes me feel like a Dakar hero - then I catch my shadow of a DR650 loaded up with camping gear - Hahaha:nya: Love it!
Maybe the camping? But damn those hot tubs were just too hot - I came out like a crayfish! And that ice on the tents this morning...Brrrrr:cold:
Pleased to make the river crossing, through the deepest hole  without dropping it - That would have been a great way to meet up with Waipukbiker, DRgirl and Wade again!

Thanks Bart - Great ride, great experiences, great fun, great friends - old and new, Just great!
Not sure if it was 2 banana's awesome - at least 3!:banana::banana:

PS if anyone finds a new iphone 4s in a plastic bag by the side of the road heading North out of Waipawa, after the BP station - its mine! There's some good RRRR pics on there as well! Doh!:Oops: Tried to locate it on myicloud but it was turned off, so no joy there. Yeah thanks for all the phone quotes guys - yep, I do owe you all for having to wait for me - I thought I was missing out the whole of that section not just the first bit... I'm sure Wade kept "y'all" entertained with some more of his history lessons! There's a teaching career in there somewhere for you Wade!

As for getting a bike to match the vest... You'd need platform boots if you went for a KTM Bart, and I don't think that Suzuki do a DR in orange!....;)

cruel, but true  but I'm optomistic things will improve once I work out the technology; as they say "time is a great teacher", although it does have the downside of eventually killing all its pupils.

Hey, loved the advrider write up.
Great pictures (again!) and a cool write up as well, Leanne and the boys loved looking through it, and now they all realise that I'm a big show off all the time not just at home!
Thanks for getting those berm bashing shots as well. They're some of the coolest pics of me riding ever! Can I get a copy of those? Maybe I can just download them straight of advrider?

I'm not home at the moment, but will make some bigger versions of the photos available early next week. I might have a play around with a couple and see if I can make them awesomerer. I barely had to touch photoshop with them so far.

I know, but with both of us having young families and work, life just gets in the way! On the other hand the last time we rode together was at the WAR ride and the one handed fully bottomed out jumping / landings were caught on film. Berm bashing this time... What's next? And can I afford to fix it!?! Just point a camera at me.... I'm such a tart!
