Okay, so I know it's been a while in the making, but I've finally (pretty much) finished my rebuild, the bike in question being my 1990 CBR250RR, finished in Repsol colors. Been to an A.R.T. day so far, booked in for another track day in about a month. Gonna spend some time on the dyno within the next few weeks hopefully, just to make sure the motor is running absolutely perfect.
Details to date are:
Powdercoated frame, swing-arm and subframe
Blueprinted motor inside and out
Resurfaced and repainted fork lowers, top triple tree, and motor side casings
Brand new sticky tires - Michelin Pilot Powers front and rear
New track fairings
New bearings, lines, filters, cables, brake pads, etc etc etc...

All that's left is some good levers, crash protection, and some stompgrip.
Eventually, I'd like to upgrade the rearsets and clipons, but the factory ones are doing the job fine for now.

Bike looks fantastic well done!
Hate to think what it costs to get an old bike looking like new.

Needs the top of the rear fairing, the tank, and the wheels, painted in the correct orange. Would make a big difference.

buts its a 250cc bike no matter what ya do to it.. should have just got a thou an been done with it

The tank will eventually be painted to match, when I originally bought the bike (over two years ago) it was already done in Repsol colours, the tank was already that richer orange colour. As for the wheels, I prefer the black, and the rear fairing is as it came to me. I wasn't looking to make it a replica of today's Team Repsol bikes, just my own version of it.

And I'd rather have a 250 that I built myself rather than a thou that I can't work on without the latest computer diagnostic machine, that I can't afford anyways! Why does it always have to be about going as fast as godly possible? I have just as much fun on my little bike!

Thank you sir. And you'd be surprised, wasn't that expensive really, good research is the key.

Blueprinted motor inside and out
You blueprinted the outside of the motor?
I hope that paint comes off.

Haha I knew someone would catch me on that!
I spent a good amount of time with the motor at a friends reconditioning shop, together we went over every piece of the motor making sure there were no cracks or stress points, them balancing the bottom end and reassembling everything piece by piece to the manuals specifications. Everything even got torqued correctly!

Yeah you know...making sure the engine mount bolts are the correct colors, balancing the gaskets on the clutch cover, not to mention mirror polishing the exhaust header gaskets.
Doesn't everyone do that stuff??

Its what we call a lounge build, too clean to build in a dirty old shed so build it in the lounge :D

That looks very cool!
Little bikes are a real laugh you can really wring there necks and push them as hard as you can. I always have a big grin on my face after playing around on a smaller bike.
Well done on the build... Most things I take apart end up staying that way :'(

I didn't realise that 1000cc bikes only came about after fuel injection became the norm. :wait:

EFI doesn't make them any harder to work on... easier in some respects (hardware and sensor diagnostics). The diagnostic machine you need is called a 10 dollar multimeter from Jaycar, generally the dash itself will hand out all the fault codes you need, should you ever need them, which for the vast majority of owners is never.
Agree about raping 250s though

I got a telefonica movistar 92 cbr, awesome fun.
Have you put an after market rear set cowl on your bike? Im real keen to get one for mine.
Phreak
22nd January 2013, 20:01
Not technically an "aftermarket" rear cowl, it's a single piece rear from ozzymotorcyclefairings.com.au
I talked to Steve, the company owner, in great detail about what I wanted in my new fairings, made specifically for the track. Go on his website, he's real easy to deal with!

MOAR PICS!!!!!
The counter weights on the crank shaft were quite a bit out of balance, I think I skimmed 30 grams off the worst one. And my aftermarket pistons were pretty bad too. You'd think they'd be the same, but manufacturers only produce things to a cost effective standard.

Mikuni's? Nah, if I want to get better performance out of the carbs setup, I'll put my HRC set back on. Just not necessary for my current intentions. I need to develop my riding skills before I even think about doing that though. :)

Why is everyone so insistent on me getting a bigger bike?
A. I can't afford another bike at the moment
B. I already have a bike that fits my needs perfectly
and C. I don't want another bike right now!
Eventually, I will be looking at a bigger bike, probably something along the lines of a CBR600 or a CB600 or similar. Unless I can find a thou for a really good price that is! but that's a LONG WAY off yet, I've got (hopefully) 3 years of Uni to get through first! :)

awesome work, im going to be doing the same with my 91', new fairings have just arrived. may think about painting the frame now having seen what black looks like.
Did you get the heel guards yourself or did they come with yours?
Phreak
24th January 2013, 10:27
My heel guards are custom made, came with the bike. Eventually I'm gonna put some tyga rear sets on it, with new heel guards.
Definitely go powder coat, heaps tougher than paint! :)
What colour fairings did you get, and where from?

picked up a set from http://www.austmotorcycle.com/shop/product/item33133/honda-cbr250rr-mc22-repsol.html
im thinking it might be a bit of a mission taking it completely to bits to respray cause i dont have a garage so might end up just polishig the frame and cleaning up and respraying some bits like the rearsubframe , triple Tee and the guage/headlight brackets.

Yes, it is a bit of a mission. I tried polishing my frame first too, but I found I couldn't get an even finish, it looked really patchy... and the fact that cleaning the anodizing off the frame was a hell of a job, I gave up in the end. I had seen a powder coated frame and decided that I wanted mine like it!
Another cool little trick you might want to consider... black adhesive vinyl covering the frame. Same look (ish!) but heaps easier and cheaper to do!
playerB
24th January 2013, 13:47
maby il just give it a good clean, not so much a polish. spray the rear subframe black though after doing some surface rust removal. Same with some rust removal on the front brackets.
how long did it take you to get it all to bits, then back together after doing the powdercoating?
I do want to look at getting the wheels done orange though. would you recommend whoever you used for powercoating to do it?
ducatilover
24th January 2013, 13:51
To strip anodising use a strong oven cleaner. Depending on the temp and anodising I usually wipe it off after 15min (on a large part).
Getting an even finish is piss easy, use a sanding block and wet/dry paper. :first:

I do want to look at getting the wheels done orange though. would you recommend whoever you used for powercoating to do it?It's unlikely that you'll get a powder in the right shade of orange, so for those bits you'll probably want to have it painted in a 2 pak paint like Honda do.
The powder is available, but it needs to be purchased in bulk IIRC.

Arkro Powder Coating, on the 'shore. Yup I'd definitely recommend them! Um I took my time putting it all back together, rebuilt the motor at the same time and did some other bits and pieces too. If you've already got all the right tools though, you should feasibly rebuild the whole bike in 3 full days, so long as you know what you're doing...! :-)

What brand were you suing? I've stripped a few frames with Easy Off or something, anything that's properly caustic works
Otherwise some proper paint stripper works. I just stripped part of a Honda Bros frame this morning, nice and naked now :D
