Why would a bike that's ment to have been revinned and has it's compliance all in place "not be registered at the correct CC rating.
The bike is a Harley Sportster that was confiscated by the police after at was involved in a runner gone bad and then sold by auction while the guy that had owned it was in prison.
The new owner then rebuilt the rolling chasis and since the 883 engine was buggered he imported a 1200cc engine from the States.
So I go take a look at it and notice that it's still registered as an 883,,,but the owner claims it's been revinned it's all legit an he has the paper work to prove it.
Anyway,,,just curious now,,,I ain't buying it.

I'm guessing it's still registered as an '883' because that's the models name. Sure it also happens to relate to engine size but you don't go calling an HQ a chev because its got a 350 in it.

If you wanted to find out if its ligit you could run the plate on car jam, should be registered as an 883 but have engine rating of 1200cc

It's entirely possible that he forgot to mention it has a 1200 in it, which will require certification.

That's the impression I got when talking with the owner about it.
Was a little gutted because by the time I found this out I'd taken it for a ride and found it performed very well and the guy has done a really good job of rebuilding it.
So I did fully intend to buy it but then the doubt set in over the following few days an now I'm not so sure.

Plenty of 883 sporters out there repowered or rebord to 1200CC, as stated before 883 is the model.
I would say the vin is OK, Its registered as an 883 Harley Davidson sportster, cc rating has nothing to do with model designation.
I had a 1972 datsun 1600, that went through revinnn and certification, fitted with a 200B 2 liter motor, I was still a 72 datsun 1600, because that was the model.

This not a kitted or stroked 883,,it is a new 1200 5 speed resently imported from the States.
And claimed as having been complied as an 883.
See any problem in trying to put that shit past a cop on the road side ?
I do.

The engine fitted has no bering on the registration of the vehicle when certified or vinned.
A ford 10 with a 302 V8 in it is still a ford 10. The engine in my datsun 1600 was out of a 200b, yet was a still a datsun 1600.\Any cop on the side of the road only needs to see the vin number , and if the bike has a current WOF, and current license ( registration) the where is the problem? If there was a miss match of information at time of vinning, it would never have been vinned.
I think you are being picky, but for self satisfaction, ask the seller if he has the purchase papers for the engine...and carry them on the bike to show a cop if he asks, but why would ha ask in the first place? Unless you were doing something to cause him to suspect your were in breach of the law in some way.

as an addition to this, over the past few months on this site there have been many many member give details of bikes registered as one thing, but are actually something else,
Read the LAMS thread to expand upon this. Where is the difference?
Paperwork on Vehicles in NewZealand is shoddy at the best of time.

How many cops can tell you it's a 1200 and not an 883 though?
My "ZZR400" has a ZZR600 motor in it, and there's no way a cop will know, or a WoF/VIN inspector.

Certification is not an automatic thing for engine transplants. Depending on the percentage of INCREASE of horsepower/weight gained with the new engine ... compared to the standard engine it was fitted with, at time of the vehicles manufacture. (I could be wrong [again] but I think over 20 % increase in HP)
Of course any cutting/welding (to make it fit) WILL require cetification.

Increase in capacity, AFAIK, requires certification.

That's assuming they can take off the tail unit, to take the tank off, to take the airbox off, to read the number? :2thumbsup

Ok, but being to picky never did me any harm in the past,,,that I know of.:msn-wink:
So anyway I took your advice and went back an had another yarn with the owner and I'll be picking up the bike on Wednesday.
Cheers.
