View Full Version : Bridgestone Battlax T30 - Free tyre giveaway

Hello All,
As you may know, we are the NZ distributor for Bridgestone motorcycle tyres. Late next month we have a new product being launched - the Battlax T30 sport touring tyre.
The T30 has been designed to be a premium grip touring tyre in Bridgestones Battlax radial range. Bridgestone are boasting improved dry and wet grip by using a new compound in the front tyre and improving again on their unique Nano Pro-Tech technology, creating the best possible grip across varying temperature and weather conditions. With this improvement of grip, Bridgestone are suggesting that the wear life should be similar to BT023, meaning touring and longer distance riders get significantly enhanced feel and grip for close to the same mileage. Bridgestone's own tagline for the T30 is "Engineered for smooth handling, maximum performance and rider comfort".
What we want to know is how all this applies to NZ conditions, and we want Kiwibiker forums to help us find out! You may have seen mid last year we ran a similar competition where two sports riders were given a set of S20's to test and report back on. Those riders were Drew and Onearmedbandit, who received a free set of Bridgestone Battlax S20 Sport tyres and in return wrote us honest reviews on the tyres.
What we are offering here is exactly the same for two touring riders. A set of free T30's to two respected, professional and objective KB members, who can provide us through this forum with objective and honest reviews of the tyres. With a bit of luck they will be as well received as the S20's were!
- We will be accepting nominations from now until Friday the 22nd of February - any KB member gets to vote for two other members to take part in this review (although not themselves).
- 1 nomination must be from the North Island, 1 from the South Island
- The product is a premium touring tyre (similar to Michelin Pilot Road 2/3, Pirelli Angel, Bridgestone BT023) so the nominees must have bikes appropriate to this type of tyre
- the nominated riders agree to provide honest and objective reviews of the tyres on KB, on at monthly intervals
- the nominated riders agree to have their image and review extracts potentially used in advertising
Please let us know if anyone has other questions!?
Looking forward to receiving nominations and getting first hand feedback on the new T30! Let the voting commence...

"A set of free T30's to two respected, professional and objective KB members" ....yeah...ok, that one may be stretch, but i can make an effort! lol (for science!...and tyres!!)
But as a guy who has two kids, a retarded dog and more bills than a duck farm...I would love to test the hell out of these with out actually paying for the pleasure.(Im not cheap!...I just happen to be always broke!)

It would take at least a "free" set to ever get me back on a set of Bridgestone sports touring tyres, after entirely suboptimal experiences on the egregious 020 and the marginally better 021.
The best fate for both of those would be on a bonfire.
Battlaxes have been expunged from my tyre procurement radar. Dealers who promote these are wasting their time with me.

I think Blackbird is the man to give you a decent, objective report, that will be disseminated across a broad base of potential users in your target market. Geoff IAM qualified, writes brilliant reviews and has lots of time and motivation.
He's my Nth Island pick. He lives on the Coromandel loop too.
My Sth Is pick is MyGSXF - Jen is capable of stringing a sentence together and is also a riding instructor.

Fuck - you're a hard man ... I had Battleaxes on my GSF650 (don't ask me for a number - no idea) when I bought it brand new .. they were very grippy tyres and I thought they were great - lucky for me - because they were grippy and a great tyre to learn to ride my first every in-line four on ..
Unfortunately I killed the rear tyres in 4,000ks . and that included 2,000 running in the brand new bike .. I changed to other tyres because I thought that mileage was pretty poor - way to low .. I got 5,000 ks on the rear on Pilot Road, Pirrelli Diablos ... so I changed to Conti Road Attacks ... (Conti told me I'd get 8,000ks on their rear ...Yeah right ! I killed the rear in 3,000ks ... ) But I loved they tyres so much I kept them ..
I'd be tempted by the offer of free tyres - but I love the Conti's and wouldn't seriously consider changing .. However I think the bridgestones would probably get my vote as the second most fun tyre I've had on the small Bandit.

Thanks to those that have nominated me and it looks like Im allowed out for some rides! Well since Sharrys accident most of my riding has been to and from work but this looks to change in the very near future. Mind you 60ks a day through Auckland traffic can be like a major tour....
I think I would enjoy testing some new hoops and doing some reviews on them. I was going to vote for Gremlin but it would seem they wont fit his bike. So +1 for MarkW for NI and FJrider for down south.
Thanks again to those that have nominated me, tiz a little humbling.

Gidday Banditbandit, sounds like you had an un-ideal experience with OEM specification tyres! As mentioned before, the tyres on the bike new usually don't reflect the aftermarket tyres performance as the OEM ones are specced by the bike manufacturer. This means they usually suffer for life particularly as they like light thin tyres that make the demo bikes feel like they handle 'easier'. There are other factors in play of course but this is one of the more obvious ones. I would certainly recommend not completely discounting a tyre brand if you didn't enjoy the tyres on a brand new bike (and this goes for all brands not just Bridgestone) as the tyre you will buy from your dealer, unless you specifically ask for the OEM tyre type, will be the aftermarket which is usually a much nicer thing, for grip, mileage and life.
Interesting, read about the T30 recently and it made me think about previous Battlax tyres over the years. Strangely enough my take on them is in line with Hitcher, so maybe Hitcher would give a fair (if harsh) review?
I've got a Michelin tattoo so that rules me out
I'm not surprised at your thoughts, in all honesty the BT020 and BT021 were not particularly well recieved tyres, they certainly had their shortfalls and these are the tyres that Hitcher is talking about when he mentions wanting to burn them! :) However, Bridgestone were aware of this and when the time came for the BT021 to be superseeded they stepped up their game big time for the BT023 and we are hoping they will have done so further again for the T30 as they have been researching it for a couple of years now. This is why we do this test with the T30, (and S20 in the past) as the reputation formed by riders of Bridgestones radials from 6-10 years ago needed some work, and this is an honest way of us gaining and providing real world, unbiased feedback. As you say, maybe Hitcher would be ideal, see if we can change his mind? I have read the other reviews he has done of products (like the Aprilia Tuono) and he is certainly honest and open about what he finds!

bet ya dont have a 130/70/16 so i cant help
You are correct, that size usually takes a sports tyre rather than a touing so it's not available in the T30 but it is in the S20 in that size, or there are still some BT016's around that are likely a little cheaper :)

Heh, well, they ARE available in my sizes (110/80/19 and 150/70/17). So if people want me to review it's possible, but it would be compared to other dual purpose bike tyres in 19 and 17 combination, and perhaps not your traditional sport touring tyre sizes (120/70/17 and 180/55/17) and target market.
I'll let others decide.

I got nothing but good things to say about 021's, particularly in the wet on the TDM, nice to see the new ones are available in the right size too. Be interesting to see the life of them, I was looking at about 6 - 8k for a rear and not much more for a front with the 021's.

I opted to leave the BT021 tyres on the Yamaha when I bought last year, as they felt really good on the test ride. Was going to have the Michelin Pilot Road 3's swapped over from my trade in, kind of which I had now, not so confidant in the wet on the 021's Touring tyres.
Be interesting to to see/read a review on the T30's.

Maha, the BT021 is very outdated now, and the biggest improvements made in the BT023 and T30 are there wet grip over prevous iterations. I think you would be plesantly surprised if you tried either the BT023 (for premium mileage) or the T30 (for premium touring grip) over the BT021, particularly if you liked the feel of them when you first rode them.

Agreed, I have read OAB's review on the 023's? but I like the sound of the T30 tyre thus far, and naturally, if you are endorsing them, they obviously have merit. Grip in the wet is what I miss about the PR3's.

From how I read Maha's post, he misses the PR3s because of how much grip they have in the wet.

Agreed, I have read OAB's review on the 023's? but I like the sound of the T30 tyre thus far, and naturally, if you are endorsing them, they obviously have merit. Grip in the wet is what I miss about the PR3's.
OAB is testing the S20, which is our current Sports tyre - one version more sporty than the T30 or BT023, which essentially share a categories. From the information we have to date, we are expecting T30 to have the best wet grip for road ever available from Bridgestone, who (for the last few years) have been renoun for wet ability in both BT023 and the BT016-PRO and then the S20 which replaced it about a year ago.
Nice but Shinko's for the win over the 023's. Be interested to try out the T30's once I'm down to the canvas. :innocent:
The Shinko's are a great tyre, that win on price and give away probably a little in extreme performance and wet grip. I'm glad you like them on the poor old TeDiuM. How do you find them in the wet Scracha? If you go T30, you know I will want to hear what you think :)

NI Hitcher SI Janter :niceone: but to be honest, I have used Bridgestones extensively over the years but lost faith in the brand when the 021's hit the stands & as mentioned by others here their a TOTAL SHIT TYRE.... I look forward to the reviews but you'll be hard pushed to swing me away from Avon Storms :headbang: new set going on next week for the Southern Cross Road Rally in March which would be a great test for any tyre  FYI I'm on a Blackbird

Once I'm down to canvas I'll probably try a T30 regardless. The Shinko Verges have been astonishing to b honest Jay. I too thought they'd be shite in the wet but they slide less (and then grip quicker) than the old BT023's. They don't spin up as much in the wet too (you'd struggle to get a tedium spinning up in the dry with about 85 ponies and 270 degree firing order) . Hard braking it's hard to say. They "feel" lighter too...bike seems easier to turn in at speed. I gave em a damn good workout in the wet at Hampton Downs (fuck that bike loves the wet).
In the dry...I'd say they're about equal to the 023's. I can give the bike a good handful of gas in 3rd gear cranked over to the pegs at an apex and the back end never so much as gives a hint of stepping out. I dare say on a bike with 100 plus ponies and infinite ground clearance the 023's may show why they're nearly 50% costlier (yes..I know they're on special at the moment..)
They're no good at all on mud and gravel though. Much entertainment on the 309 or Castle Rock :msn-wink:

I "second" James Duece with his Nominations:
"I think Blackbird is the man to give you a decent, objective report, that will be disseminated across a broad base of potential users in your target market.
And yea I know its late but WGAF!

...twas ma Birthday yesterday, and this is the best present of all
As for the review of the tyres, I will not be doing a "sporty" review like our mate Onearmbandit (Frazer) did for the sport tyres.(And it was a GREAT review!)
Instead, it will be the everyday riders review...the everyday grind into work, rain, hail or shine, with the occassional weekend blast over the hills and a few longer rides thrown into the mix
Im quite keen to see how these sport touring tyres hold up on the old VFR with the above everyday use...and with winter coming, what better time to put some new rubber on the old girl.
Many Many thanks to Bridgestone NZ for making this offer available to the KB members :niceone:
