plenty of intuitively obvious things well vocalised.
i did like the one guys comments about choosing to get on a bike, taking your life in your own hands means taking responsibility for your outcomes, regardless of 'fault' under traffic laws and so on.
i do most of my riding in auckland traffic (daily commuter) and started splitting a couple of weeks into ownership. i do agree that its a more natural and potentially safer way to ride than trying to be a car. i've been doing it for 3 or 4 years now without incident.
its also far less stressful, but thats a personal benefit :)

It's a bit boring.
If I wanted to sit in traffic I would get a car. Or something to pose on. What is the point of a bike if you don't do it?

As always the justification for lanesplitting is "because I physically can" and "because that's what I do". Which doesn't seem like much of a justification, but if you get away with it then great for you.
Happily it's non-issue where I live because a 'long' line of traffic is about six cars at a stop light.

So was I at first, but you just gotta do it. You'll never learn if you dont. Start small, fighting your way upto the front of the lights. Its not that bad really. Plus you dont want your engine to over heat.

I dont tihnk this video was really ment for 'us'(bikers), but more for the people that seem to think lane splitting is 'bad' or 'wrong' or 'unsafe'. When really, its not 'bad', or 'wrong', and where it can be 'unsafe' so is sitting in bumper to bumper traffic in a cage. The amount of people I have seen on the northern motorway heading into town from Esmond Rd on ramp reading the herald while they are sitting in the traffic, even at 30km.... At least if we are lane splitting, we are(or should be) paying more attention then most of the cages on the road. I personaly thought the video was, while yes abit boring, quite a good video, and needs to be viewed by more non-bikers. So should alot of those RideApart videos, they seem quite good.

I'd question some of their stats but generally agreed with most of what was said.
I particularly liked the comment "More motorcyclists should learn to do it safely".

People say the same thing about skydiving ...
All good, until things (and people) outside your control ... "eventuates" ... that you didn't expect.
The old "That wouldn't happen to me" syndrome ...

As always the justification for lanesplitting is "because I physically can" and "because that's what I do". Which doesn't seem like much of a justification,
When you have some real experience of daily commuting in Auckland traffic your commects may have more credibility; although you'd more than likely change your tune.
Lanesplitting is a service to all motorists; it takes a vehicle effectively out of the flow of traffic and, hence, reduces congestion significantly. It's also a damn sight safer than sitting in traffic. Saw a concatena about four spaces ahead of me on Friday. A car was hit by a van and squashed into the car in front; leaving their bumper imbedded in the boot. With this sort of accident a car gets panel damage; the driver maybe gets a bit of wiplash. On a bike you get totally pulvarised.
but if you get away with it then great for you.
I don't "get away with it"; that's like saying that the car drivers "get away with it" just by getting to work in one piece.

I only lane split at lights. Bit too new/not so confident to be able to split while traffics moving. Once traffic starts crawling at 5 pm I'll be splitting then sooner or later.

I was apprehensive about lane-splitting at first. But I found starting out that if I followed more experienced splitters it helped give me some pointers and learn what was possible. After about 2 weeks of driving like a cager on my bike I quickly got fed up with it and started lane-splitting. Once you start…….
Learning to get to the front and then “gun” your bike away was also a learning curve. Luckily GNs are so forgiving.

it's definitely a confidence thing, I'm also scared I'll get a bit of target fixation. I'll have to start giving it a go soon, I find bumper to bumper traffic and continuously stopping and going for so bloody long very stressful and tiring.

Someone wrote somewhere else that bikes aren’t made for stop/go traffic. My gn’s kinda jerky at low speed. I don’t (think I) have any overheating problems but I don’t want to try my luck. I make the odd minor mistake here and there, but that’s what learning’s all about and why I have a cheap first bike.
Reading the posts has been helpful and also unhelpful. Unhelpful in that I find myself questioning what I’m doing because of all the different advice received. Helpful in that I’ve calmed down and learned to “go with the flow” more. I try not to do anything that will aggravate a cager.
I think, very important, is a friendly wave to anyone who is courteous to bikers in traffic.

they probably aren't, no. I hear you about slow speed, but I think it's me not the bike, it's so effing hard going at slow speed because it's slower than walking pace sometimes I'm wobbly as fuck! really stressful.
as for a friendly wave, I also find taking my hand off the bar hard haha

I watched the lane-splitting video last night and I thought it was excellent. Cleared up a lot of things for me and gave an interesting perspective on the subject. Well worth the watch for newbies like myself.
