Not "Fast for an Adventure tourer" or "Fast for a V-Twin" just fucking Fast full stop. In sport mode with the MTC turned on, it'll roost a GSXR1000 to 160 fast. Switch the MTC off and you better have your shit together because My God does it wheelie. I'll do a bit of a review after dinner and post a link.

This bike is hotter than a Latino cabaret girl and I don't think the "White Trash" would bullshit too much. I work down in the Southern Patagonia and talked myself into doing the Pan American. I see a lot of adventure bikes during the season heading to Ushuia, 90 % are BMW and the rest Jappers. No way I can do a BMW or Triumph again (650 Dakar, Tiger 950). What gets me is there is plenty of no police ,high speed mileage in Chile/Argentina and a lot of slow bikes , so for me the KTM has to be the option. There is something gay about being passed by a Latino in a little Citroen hatchback doing 160 k. Price is a problem but thats the case with most must have items.

+1 though the standard 19" version looks a little lame. There are some photos of the std version where the orange crash bar and sump guard have been fitted and it looks sweet.
By about now any issues would have emerged online, but it would appear the biggest issues with the bike are the indicator switch and the price outside of Europe.

Indicator switch! Damn it, I knew there was something weird I'd forgotten to mention, it feels a little strange to use. Are they breaking overseas? As for the price, I reckon it's a steal at $26500 or $27500.

The on-line complaints are around the distance you have to move the switch is too short and the feel isn't there, so you have to look down to see if you've actualy put the indicator on. Also recall something about harder in one direction.
The euro price is under 14k euros with a bunch of farkles (according to the internet so take that as you may) which is about 22k NZ. The oz price is 25k in Oz dollars!
Oh and the other "complaint" that is not a problem, is the exposure of the sump and front zorst. To be fair that is an issue for all of the adv bikes, which is why I don't consider that to be an issue.
EDIT: and seriously, the big issue with the bike is the indicator switch!!!!

Oh right, I wear really thin road race gloves so once I got used to the indicator switch I never gave it another thought. When you push it right, the r/h indicator comes on and when you push it left the L/H one comes on. Magic.
Buying one for 14K Euro on the same side of the world as where they're produced compared to $26500-$27500 here seems not too bad to me either. I know a guy that wanted to buy a 1200GS Adventure here but could get the same bike in the UK for over 10K Kiwi less.
Good news if an indicator switch is our biggest problem.

Took the standard 19" model for a very short test ride this morning. Sure has some boogie above 6k rpm. It lifts the front wheel at 100kmph in 3rd gear with just a roll on of the throttle.
Ride impression was:
- Felt very much like I was sitting on top the bike. The sensation was that I was much higher than on the strom, but I doubt it as when I was standing still with both feet on the ground it was only marginally higher. Expect the R model to be even more so as it is definetly higher and I can't flat foot when stationary. Also the R's screen is a lot shorter so I'd expect that to enhance the height sensation.
- Siting on the R model with both feet on the ground, has both heels about 3 cm off the ground, so somewhere between tippy toe and flat foot. I understand that the R's seat is not height adjustable, does anyone know for sure?
- The T model seat is not even close to being as comfortable as my K9 strom. It has a ridge line on each side that "cut in" to my arse cheeks, unless I sat back in the seat where it is flatter. It is also very firm and my big fat lardy arse was signaling even after a 20 minute ride that perhaps a long trip might develop a bit of monkey butt. They didn't have a demonstrator R model and the seat looks and feels to be quite similar to the T but without the ridges. It also has a "fabric" finish to get stained and retain mud.
- The standard zorst was louder than I expected and sounds vtwin cool at lower revs. As the speed picks up it can't be heard unless you chop it down a couple of cogs and wot.
- The power parts akro is over $2000 for just the can - ouch! It connects under the foot pegs with a very wide diameter sleeve flange so another manufature's can would require quite a lot of custom pipe work to connect.
- The KTM luggage mounts are already on the bike.
- The rear zorst has a heat shield that got quite hot, and dont even think about touching the can anywhere else. Soft luggage would definetly need some sort of frame made up as it would melt anywhere it touched the can or zorst.
- The demonstrator bike had rust showing on the stainless steel zorst where the bracket that goes all the way around holds it. Suspect that there is a missing plastic thingie, or that it just melted.
- The standard screen was in its highest position and there was minimal buffetting on my adv style helmet.
- Did I mention it has a bunch of get go above 6k? Perhaps a radar detector would be mandatory.
- The suspenders on the road, no twisties except a couple of round abouts on the test ride, were was not noticably different to the strom. As to be expected as they have similar travel and weight to contend with. I expect that it would probably be qutie different on rough and bumpy stuff as the Strom's suspenders are budget.
- The front brake is two finger easy, not one finger, and easily hauls up the bike with plenty of feel.
- I have no recollection of the rear brake so in hindsight that probably means it is similar to the strom which is a wooden thing at best.
- I'd read quite a few times that both bikes look better than the photos and I'd have to agree. Though I think that the T model is at the ugly end of the spectrum (I know I ride a strom, so that makes me qualified to speak on this ok). The R model is much more eaasy on the eye, but is still a long way off being called eye candy.
- I bumped the horn and thought that I'd run over a kitten.
- I recently had lasic eye surgery and struggle to ready my stroms digital stuff. I doubt that the katie's is any bigger but it was easy to read.
- The side stand bottom plate is pathetically small and the bike would be on its side within seconds in many places.
- The inidcator switch is weird, but OK when I worked out that it works on pressure rather than a move sideways push sort of thing.
- I didn't get to sample the traction control or abs.
- Headed up the northern motorway and did throttle roll ons from 90ks. In 6th it was strong but not spectular and surprisingly smooth. 5th was getting the grin going and would be excellent for those short straight over takes. 4th was real strong and probably un-necessary. 3rd was a hoot, it just goes like a crazy thing. There is quite a noticable step in the accleration at about 100ks and the front wheel lifts in a power stand (sorry orificer). The rev light is quite noticable.
- I don't recall seeing any other idiot lights other than neutral.
- Engine braking is what I'd call normal for a sporty large v-twin.
- Shifting gears both up and down is nice and smooth. Not notchy at all. Note that you must blip the throttle on all down shifts.
- Back at the bike shop I stopped and was able to get the bike front on and reflecting in the window of the shop next door. The low beam and led lights were very visible and the small size indicators were plenty bright. But where is the high beam / low beam switch? Them mad Austrians forgot it. I found it eventually but had to get off the bike first. On the left hand switch block there is a index finger head light flasher like most modern bikes. If you push it in the opposite direction to "flashing", it toggles the high beam light on. Both the high and low beams are concurrently on.
- The hand guards look like they would be quite effective for branch and wind protection, except if you dropped the bike I doubt that they would protect the levers as they are just plastic.
- The bars are further forward and lower than I like, but some bar risers would quickly fix that.
- If you're going anywhere near rocks, absolutely get a sump guard. The standard plastic thing wouldn't protect shite.
- The orange crash bars on the R are quite close to the petrol tank and are requried. The T model has a plastic sacrifical cover where the tank sticks out at the bottom.
- I'd also be looking at a radiator guard as a must have for any gravel road work.
Summary of like (from a short ride and walk around):
- Nice low down and mid range power.
- Nutty top end power for this style of bike!
- The front brake was low effort, plenty of feel and strong.
- Nice clear and easy to read dash.
- Not too tall for me.
Summary of things to be improved / modified:
- definetly the seat
- side stand
- bash plate
- radiator guard
- the price - ouch. My calculations on the back of a post it note come out at $30k on the road insured with no farkles.

Took the standard 19" model for a very short test ride this morning. Sure has some boogie above 6k rpm. It lifts the front wheel at 100kmph in 3rd gear with just a roll on of the throttle.
Awesome points. I've only just now got the opportunity to spend some time on the standard Adventure on a wet but well groomed gravel road. I had to actually force myself to slow down because I was going faster and faster trying to get it to misbehave. Chuck it in offroad mode, feed it some fat and hang the fuck on! I was absolutely gobsmacked at how hard it will accelerate on the standard Trail attacks. And the ABS is fricken amazing as well, couple of fingers on the front lever and you can feel the front tyre digging in and the thing just stops. You can get the back hanging out in great big, long power slides too but it never gets away from you. Once my brother's got his RM-Z450 sorted I think I'll have jam chasing him down a gravel road to see if the 1190 is actually as fast and composed as it feels.
There's a couple of very real downsides to all of this of course. First, the tricky electronics are soooo clever, they have you believing you're a far better rider than you actually are. Secondly, I've got to mortgage my kids so I can buy an "R" and my wife is going to shit bricks when she finds it parked in the garage. I'll win her over with a 390 Duke when they arrive :D

Chuck some decent 50/50 adventure tyres on the 21" and it would eat the 450 in a straight line. Corners would still have you fighting 230kgs vs 120, so I think the RMZ for going around corners.
For the dwonsides one is good for me, and the other is the same as you
I'm an "average" skilled rider at best, so I want the fancy smancy elecky gizmos to, I hope, extend my average time between bins. I have no delusions that I have the skills and reactions to handle 150hp when things go bad.
To the second part I tried the kid mortgage technique and failed. So it is just plain old hard saving money for a while yet.

Well I got to throw my leg over a demonstrator R and took it for a short but informative ride. I left work early-ish yesterday and picked it up around 4:30pm. I mostly followed my normal commute route home, then managed to do Forest Hill rd into the Waitakeres, half way to Piha, half way along Anawhata rd (gravel) and home. This morning I took it to work as per normal and dropped it back at the dealer around 8am.
There are a few things that stuck in my head (in no particular order):
- It is right on the practical limit height wise for me. I often found that I had to do the dirt bike things and shuffle onto one butt cheek to get a good leg on the ground. Had a couple of moments early on when habit took over and I put my leg down and there was nothing.
- The suspenders on the R give a very jiggly ride compared to my strom which is MUCH smoother. It is fine over the larger bumbs and manholes etc, it just "jiggled" with the road surface undulations. I didn't check any of the compression or rebound damping but would definietly wind it back a few clicks from the setup that was on the test bike.
- There is a LOT of heat coming from the rear engine cylinder / zorst at low speeds onto the inner / lower thigh area. I've read some comments regarding this on overseas forums, and it will be a real issue in summer.
- The exhaust can mounting bracket had the same marks / issue as I'd noticed on the T version so that is an issue.
- I couldn't stop myself wicking it up as I was changing up the gears to enjoy the power, but was riding slower at cruise (suspect the screen was the issue - see next comment)
- The R screen is only good for keeping the air stream off the lower torso. The full wind was on my helmit which generated a lot more noise than the Strom's higher screen.
- The headlight is powerful on high beam but it is too narrow a beam (low beam is always on). When you're approaching and going around corners you can't see around the corner, just straight ahead into the ditch which is where you don't want to go!
- Pillion seat is rubbish. Seriously KTM sort your shit on the seat.
- The rider seat is much more comfortable than the T model as it doesn't have the ridges on the sides. It is still not a patch on the strom standard seat.
- I got sore wrists which was partly from me just not being relaxed, but mostly from the bend which turned my wrists inwards. I also prefer my levers a lot lower and will tweak and install riser / offsets to move my bars further up and back.
- The zorst can stays hot for a very long time.
- On the gravel road I gave it a bit of gas in street mode, but only in a straight. It just took off like a fast thing, without any wheel spin. I should have done that in capitals as I was surprised at just how fast it acclerated. There was also no obvious traction control intervention, it just acclerated like crazy. On any other bike the rear would have just spun up and snaked down the road.
- I stopped and changed to rain mode on the gravel and didn't notice much difference except the top end taperred off. Apparently it limits to 100hp in rain mode.
- It will happily do a gravel burn out when stationary with the front stoppers on. Just letting go of the front brake and it some how seamlessly takes off and the rear stops spinning. Some very well programmed TC there.
- I didn't like the clutch action at all. It took up fully in the last couple of millimeters of travel on the lever and made racy take offs a mess. I don;t recall it being like that on the T bike, so I'll put that down to how this bike was.
- The people at KTM who work out the accessory prices are closely related to the people who price BMW parts!
- The turn signal switch is too far away from the grip and requires you to partially release your grip for a left turn. My thumb is too short?
- The horn is without doubt the most pathetic, embarrising, and stupid pieces of shit I've every encounteered on a bike. meeeep meeep.
- I like the mirrors, good rear view and vibration free at all revs.
The bike in question only had 1700ks on the clock but already had a new rear tyre fitted:crazy:. Suspect that part of the purchse budget should be rear tyres.
I'm sure I'll think of some more stuff after I post this, but most of my thinking will be consumed with how to position my "conversation" with Mrs P!

The wee got a good clean and I took some of my farkels off it. I'll start a retardme auction this evening for a good price.
Then I mucked around for a while sorting out how to mount the pack frame off the wee as there isn't one for the 1190 yet. After a lot of, what about this way etc, it was a whole pile easier just to mount it to the frame on katie. I needed to weld on a couple of brackets that took a while, some nuts and bolts and all worked well. I got #2 spawn to sit on the bike and the frame is just right as a back rest for the pillion too.

More observations:
The much narrower 21" front tyre loves tram-lining. Not a problem, it is just very obvious.
The temperature gauge consistently reads about 10 degrees too high. I'll raise that at the first service.
Seriously the horn is the most pathetic thing ever found on a motorcycle! On my evening commute home yesterday a "sub standard" cager in a 90s vintage corolla decided that my lane was where he should be. Problems were that, firstly he didn't look, and secondly that his hearing was not at all impaired. I doubt if he even heard the horn as the look of surprise when he detected me taking avoiding actions was in hind sight the first time that he worked out that I was there (and which he just continued with his lane change). Stebel anyone?

I went for another little ride last night on a gravel road. It was very wet with lots of dirt and clay patches, not much gravel and no deep gravel at all. I'm well impressed with the traction control and how planted the front wheel feels on that type of road conditions. I had it in rain mode which limits it to about 100 ponies, smooths the throttle response, and full TC.
Giving it a bit of gas coming out of corners, not too much though as the inner nanna (who didn't want to drop the new bike), anyway it just takes off, no dramas, or even obvious intervention by the traction control. The front end feel on the conti attack tyres was planted which surprised me over the slippery dirt / no gravel patches.

hey,
just watched the video of the guy and the R6...and it really showed the power of 1190. I thought my 690 was quick for a 'dirt bike' but that 1190 is a superbike with 21" and knobblies.
What is your topspeed to date?

Still running it in, but what I can say is that the quoted 150 ggs is not an exageration like on many bikes. There is a youtube of an after market zorst manufacturer that had one on a dyno and it was making (as much as dyno's can be relied on) geniune power at the rear wheel not far off 150. I'll have a look for it later and post the link.
I'm not a top speed sort of person. There as a couple of vids of a nutter quickly acclerating to an indicated 270 and then slowing down because he ran out of road. True speed for him was probably around 250 as the speedos read high on purpose from KTM.

As for the speedo's, they do seem a bit out...however, they should be adjustable to make them accurate. Not sure what the process is/will be on the 1190, but for the 690 there was a wire to disconnect (bypass dealer function) which then enabled the speedo to have an extra mode, where you could access the wheel length variable eg 2107mm..this just involved marking a spot on the ground, and then rolling the bike one revolution to another spot...measure the distance and enter that in to the speedo and then have millimetre accuracy. I used to change between 17" and 21"...so had to change it regulary. (have binned the 17" now...too much of hassle)

Yeah, it is at it's 1000km service as I type this. Ditto, my speedo error. Internatoinal forums have the odo about 99% accurate so the speedo error is programmed that way on purpose.

Nothing on the forums about this technique for the 1190s.

Some weird-ness.
I've got no chicken strips on the front and narrow ones on the rear. I've never seen a bike / tyre that does that before.

Got a new taller touring screen fitted. Weird KTM again. The tall screen is tinted. Should be clear. Oh well.
Also got the KTM skid plate and fitted that tonight. The screws for attaching the plate are counter sunk Allen key and are made out of the same soft plastic as Lego. FFS to even get them marginally tight the key was munting the screw. I'll go get some decent stainless and Locktite those in.
Edit: heated grips later this week.

Is the radiator naked? I'd be sorting it quick smart if it is...

I find the same thing on my DR if I have been riding like a normal person, ie not like an idiot, it doesn't scrub all the dirt off the last few mm of the back tyre yet the front is completely clean (when riding on the road - off road I always ride like an idiot)

Yeah, it is probably one of the most exposed radiators around with a huge gap between the top of the guard and the bottom of the faring just inviting rocks in.
Before that is heated grips!

Another weird one today. There is an accessory power socket that I use to power my action camera. When I plugged in this morning I noticed that it wasn't working. So when I got to work I checked the fuses and the 10amp fuse for the power socket had blown. So I swapped it for the spare and that blew too.
Later in the morning I went back and replaced the blown fuse with a smaller form one from my V-strom that I had in the bag, that fitted the socket. It is still going fine. So the only difference is the shape of the fuse. More investigation required.
