Was riding back from the Kapiti Coast Saturday after trying out a Kawasaki ER5 (left me a bit cold, but that’s another story). Just as the road comes to the coastal part I got very speedily and noisily “buzzed” by another biker on a Suzuki-750-something. Maybe he didn’t know the area but I thought it was really $#@%ing rude. Any idiot could see we were going to be stuck behind the camper van for the next 5 kms. Can’t see why he so desperately wanted to get in front of me. No acknowledgement either.

Is it bad manners to do that to another motorcyclist? Certainly felt it to me. Yes, I have decided he was a dickhead.

And, is there such a thing as “splay-footed” riders? He was one of them. Looked goofy-as.

If anyone else would like to vent, be my guest.

Maybe he thought "if only I can get past this lame rider in front I'll be able to pass the camper van"

If I'm behind a car (or line of cars) and a bike comes along when I'm choosing not to overtake I just move over and let them do their thing. I'm quite happy to wait for the passing lane 1km down the road instead of squeezing down the centre and then pulling into the cars braking space...and repeat down the line.

He was very rude ... but then again if I was pushing it through traffic I'd probably go past a GNat as well ... just to give me a shorter passing run for the next pull out ... but where you were in that area? From memory - probably not ..

Then again the kind of traffic that slows down a GNat is not so likely to slow down a larger sprots bike ...

And, is there such a thing as “splay-footed” riders? He was one of them. Looked goofy-as.

Yeah - some people do that - looks very funny

Good point... better to move over than worry about what they did or didn't do, I am a slow rider, and I get overtaken by bikes a lot, and have overtaken myself. But generally no point stressing about it... rants are good... sometimes tho!!! "Move it on over"

And if the vehicle doing the ''overtaking'' was a CAR....the responses thus far would be different.

This sort of thing (last moment overtaking) happens very often on the road. I saw a GN250 get squeezed out at the end of an noth bound overtaking lane by a car lane last week. Rider was shaking his head, as was I. I was heading towards them in the south bound lane, car had its two right wheels just over the double yellows....yeah its a piss off at times, and there are some real wankers out there, just have to be fully aware of whats going on around you I guess.

Akzle's response is on the money........at last.

Funny you should say that, going north to Kapiti I got squeezed out by a car where the dual goes to one lane at Pukerua Bay. Why overtake a bike at the last minute? I mean, honestly.... what do you gain - 3 metres? What someone posted above is right I guess, it's better these idiots are in front rather than behind you.

I think that you may need to learn to be a bit more assertive on your motorsickle..... also make sure that you are constantly aware of what is going on around you and how other road users are driving this may help you avoid or at least not be affected by their behaviour.

Very true. Nice to air it sometimes though. When I first starting repping I was a drooling loon and the slightest transgression made my blood boil. Then I learned to chillax on the roads. Doesn't mean there aren't jerks out there though. I try to behave myself on the roads these days. Still human though.

He wasn't "Picking on a GN rider" he was trying to overtake a slower vehicle, which happened to be you. If you subscribe to to the "I was in front so I should go first" theory ... perhaps he thought you were the rude one. On a GN you let faster vehicles go first. To not do so IS rude. The Suzuki 750 something would have a far greater overtaking ability than you could imagine on your GN. (in your wildest dreams even ... by comparison) even with double yella's ...

As has been said ... move out of their way and keep yourself safe. Don't involve yourself in their antics and incidents ....

Both the ER5 and the GS500 would be far superior machines for you than the GN. And would have managed that particular overtake a lot easier than on the GN.

If you do "Know the road" and pick the time ... all things are possible. (even ON a GN)

I understand where you're coming from. It hasn't happened to me often, bikers like that, but it has happened. I get a bit grumpy but regress because my bike is slower so just back off or pull over, whatever, let them do their own thing. I'm like you, I do check my mirrors frequently and I know what you mean about them coming up out of nowhere and it's not because we're not looking! They are clearly speeding and literally come up out of nowhere, gives you a fright sometimes. Like those two Busas yesterday? on two occassions?...one cut in pretty close to me but I wasn't that bothered by it.
On our first learner ride, one of our group was under and over taken at the same time on a left hander by two cock smokers. Had I known this at the time, I would have stopped and spoken to the idiots at Wellsford (they were at the servo) but I wasn't told about till after the ride.

Try a practice ride with and without moving your head as you check your mirrors. Even try it as you are stopped. Put something (motorcycle width ... or another motorcycle) directly behind you, and see how far in front of it you have to be to see it. or indeed ... if you can see it at all.

Have a think about ... and discuss with your Mentors ... about fitting wider flat bars instead of the cruiser style you have now.

1. Less flex/vibration in the bars.
2. Sitting/leaning forward seems more comfortable for you.
3. Better control at slower speeds.

It's a common alteration for the GN.

Manners go a long way...heading home on Jervois Q on the scooter, I pulled into a lane to give room to the sportbike behind me who wanted to split lanes faster than I cared to.....I gave him a wave out of habit, and got one back! See guys? bikers and scooters can be friends, haha :innocent:

WHAT?!
whowas that faggot? we're kicking him out of the club...

Thanks for the tips. I'll try a bit harder next time. No pun intended.

You can have one up to 140km/h in a slip stream, down mt Bruce. :innocent:

But 120+ on the flat is a mission. The 300cc kit helped a lot, 'till the clutch let go and the rest of the motor exploded

Yup, 120 easy (well, you know) anything over yup, a serious mish. Keeps one out of trouble, though...

No headwind and dead flat my bike'll do 125. Downhill with a brisk tail wind, I reckon 200kph+ would be easily achieveable. *cough*

Still faster than most bikes through traffic.

Many would scoff at this, but I get through town at least as fast on my GN as I would on my ZX6, purely because it's so flickable at low speeds, you just treat it like a massively underpowered MX bike abd beat the clutch to death :D

You're on the money.

I'd say a cheap bike is faster through traffic than an expensive one. GNs are very narrow. And cheap. Hence why they are faster than lots of bigger bikes.

A lot bikes pause when lane-splitting that I just fly through.

One day when I grow up I'll look back fondly on my trusty GN.

Probably about now someone will chip in with a bit of GN-bashing.....

I think it's just the geometry and light as steering at low speeds that aids it, and the ease of curb hopping...
My Spada was far, far better through town than the GN, better handling at low speeds and double the power.
The GN600 should be ideal in town, but I reckon ya can't get better than a grunty motard for fun in town :Punk:

Do GN600s exist? Have to do a helluva brake upgrade....!?

So, you tried a GN 300 kit?
Have you upgraded your brakes at all?

Yeah, have a 300 kit in my garage, in a box. Mine had the block decked for more compression, then exploded the bottom end and ruined the clutch. Was 300cc, 10.5:1-ish comp ratio with a mildly ported head. Was a noticeable increase in torque, but as I said, clutch hated it
Brakes? Nah  my whole system has been replaced recently with brand new caliper, master cyl and line, ad it's shit.

Are there any worthwhile mods for the GN? Might be stuck with mine for a while.

I love my Ginny, but I reckon it's not worth investing too much (or any) money into. They're worth f*ck all and I don't reckon you'd get out of it what you put in. JMO. I'd rather save for something decent then spend money on mods and still have a piece of shit looking bike. Ya know? BUT if I had two bikes and turned the ginny into a hobby, modding it.. maybe the storey would be different..

If I'm honest, sell it. If you cant:
Flat bars
Sport Demons or BT45s on the rims.

If you want to be a muppet, here's my thread for the latest incarnation of my silly thing http://www.customfighters.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1217516#post1217516

Ha ha, that seems to be the general consensus! I have the Sport Demons but no flat bar.

If I get the flat bars that must mean I have one of the baddest, street-legal GN250s out there!

I feel better already.

That first line...mmmm...do you know what hospital food tastes like? Keep it up and you'll find out...

As for looking back fondly to your GN...hardly. At least not the riding the bike memories... I had a GN and the best memory I have of it involved a long legged lady who was very friendly...stationary in the garage...:devil2:

You may find that some riders of bigger bikes just duck past a little bike, on the premise "Get on with it, or get out of the way" and while it's often done rudely...you'll find ways to live with it :headbang:

That did sound a bit foolhardy, let me clarify. I see a lot of bikes sitting in traffic not lanesplitting when there is sufficient gap and safety to do so. Some people just don't like to split. Coming through Vivian St in Welly everyday a lot of bigger or more expensive bikes pause at some gaps that my GN will easily fit through. I never split dangerously (I think).

That's what I meant.
