Evening All

just a few questions

i have a VFR400 NC30

and today on my :scooter: home from work sum how my bike blew both headlights (only low beam)

i can understand one :pinch: but both? could there be sum sort of electrical problem?

and now i guess i have to find some new lights
- have read u can just use 60/55w and just bend the tabs

or anyone know were to get
14-0180 12v 60/35w (cheap ones would be good)
cant find any on trademe or google

Cheers

fairly certain I got a replacement bulb for my nc30 when I had one from supercheap? also, not so hard to believe given they were probably put in at the same time, always on together etc etc :-)

these bikes are famous for dodgy regulator/rectifiers: that could be the source of any random electrical issue: Even if it isnt it is something to be aware of and check.

unfortunately i need to agree with this guy. it isn't a bulb problem, two bulbs made side by side in the factory, one could outlast the other by 3 years.

sounds like a spike in current, replace any old fuses. (did the fuse blow at the same time, please, tell me you checked the fuse...)

which points to stator/regulator issue.

yep fuses all good
and have put a volt meter on the lights and its peaks at 16v under mid revs (any idea what Voltage it should be?)

so dam guess that points to the regulator

any one have any idea of a price for a new or recon or 2nd one??

cheers

I'm always wary of large areas that have insulation tape applied to them. It covers a multitude of sins.

Plus ... with a possible regulator issue ... melted wiring .. ???

I'd be wanting to see what was under that tape.

It sounds like you have a multimeter: according to my ever-handy Haynes manual it should have a regulated voltage output of 13.5 to 15.5V @ 5000 rpm. current output 0 to 6A @ 5000 rpm.

16V at the bulbs is a tad high, I think you'll find.

the hot ticket is an R6 one:

Mine has some ginormous thing on it (its at least 1.5x bigger than the stock one because it wouldnt bolt to the stock holes....

the problem is if you do nothing, you will burn out the stator which is a pain and quite expensive to fix.

peak charge voltage should be 15.5 volts MAX!!! preferable charge voltage would be 14.5 to 15 volts, so yes your reg rec is on it's way out and will just keep increasing it's charge voltage till it fries some thing more expensive than a couple of light bulbs. Buy a new one there are several aftermarket units available, better option than some s/h unit that may also be on it's last legs.

cheers guys

just keen to know now

seen a few on trademe

but the stock one for the NC30 has no (- black) correct if wrong
and only 5 wires 3 yellow (alternator) red and green

or there is a vfr700 i think that has the same colour code

guessing that if the unit is bolted to the frame its earthed?
current one was just cable tied on

(black wire in photo just runs back to the battery)

cheers

you'd be hard pressed to find an alternator on your bike. yellows will connect to signal generator. and, unless i miss my guess, green is earth and red is reference voltage...

fucked if i know, i'd go for the one that looks like the original. don't know FA about bike reg/recs. else i'd suggest soldering up a couple of bridge rectifiers and schotty diodes.

My company imports those regulators and I have checked into it and found that the one you purchased from trade me was one of my units.

I am happy to send you a factory workshop manual download for your NC30 for free if you just pm me your email address

that way you can see which wire goes where and avoid problems

Well l feel like a Dick now, went out and had u good look over my bike before Cutting all the Wires (new one turning up 2Moro) I noticed that the black wire wasn't pushed in properly and a loose, Pushed it In and now im getting 14.5v and if its unpluged it Spikes to 18v, dam random. So if any One needs an unused one give me a bell.
