Wellington Coroner calls for hi-viz to be compulsory for cyclists. Lets hope he doesn't get any ideas about motorcycles.
'Turning to the issue of hi-vis clothing it is in my view a no-brainer. It should be complulsory for cyclists to wear at all times when riding in public.''

I think they should have to wear scuba gear.
The wet suit would stop skin abrasion should they fall off.
The mask would stop insects getting in their eyes.
The flippers could be painted orange to attract attention.
The snorkel would allow them to breath fresh air from above the pollution level.
And in five years we could trumpet the fact that we are killing no cyclists on our roads. While ignoring the fact that there are no cyclists on our roads.

High visibility gear should be compulsory for cyclists

Yeah sure you'll say cyclists are lycra wearing men who like shaving their legs and having orgies with each other in public, but guess who's next on the coroner's (and therefore the media's) hi-vis wank-list. No, not the trannies at hunter, us motorcyclists.
The coroner should have ECT - now that's a no brainer.

We should all make gear out of Bubblewrap, No.8 wire and duct tape. That'll satisfy the coroners.

Gotta love how its the cyclists that have to change. Lets not worry about the drivers not paying attention to the road or anything...

Just make them have headlight on at all times. It's worked for motorcyclists ... right .. ??

Yeah, saw that on the TV news. Wank Wank Wank wrap the world in cotton wool.
Maybe they should make cars with less sound deafing, more uncomfortable so the drivers are more on edge and aware of their enviroment.
Modern cars are so well appointed they are often better than your living room!

Or just limit all vehicles to 100k. Should make for an interesting cycle into work.

It's about subconcious risk assessment not visibility and if a driver doesn't respect a bike rider now then their not going to respect them anymore just because they got some new homo colours.
A no brainer huh,,,,well with that type of "non thinking" we really are buggered.
Hell I get wankers open car doors on me when I'm driving a big yellow and red 20 tonne truck.
The no brainer theory says they would of seen it.
If they'd actually looked to begin with.
Maybe I should paint it Redder,,,yeah that'll make the fuckers look.

Beginning of the end, but it wont help. NO amount of hi viz can protect you from the road users that, dont look, forget the road rules, dont realise what the intersection involves, that are so concentrating on their own trip they dont even realise they are going through intersections, dont know the road rules, dont give a shit about the road rules, forgot to look, never look, are doing their nails, talking on the phone, texting, need I gp on?
I have taken to wearing fluro. Never thought I would, but, I thought it might help being TEC on our rides. It does not help, for every man and his mate wears fluro now.
I have had a near experience just this weekend gone, in my car. If fuck knukle did not see me in my big red car, then I am fucked on my bike.
Just be aware.

Diet coke certainly should! Chemicals in that shit will kill you faster.
Coke should simply come with a warning that drinking it in excess is not good for your health.
I reckon I should stop breathing, drinking and eating. I can not, not, take my pills, for that WILL ensure I will die.
What am I to take them with? I am going WINE :niceone:

That's interesting reporting from Stuff because the NZ Herald article states the cyclist was wearing reflective stripes on his back pack and clothing and had the bikes lights on front and rear.
Also the Herald cites the truck driver as being too far to the left of the lane which caused the cyclist to be struck.
Stuff does however mention the councils need to further address the road environment as they hadn't done enough for cyclists safety.
And yet, they're making a big issue about hi-vis.

Yeah. Psychlists' riding 3, 4, or 5 abreast really helps their cause...

Yeah yeah yeah .. get that .. and yeah yeah .. I don't want them to come after motorcylists next ...
But fuck ... I've been thinking about getting a push bike to get fit and I would not ride a bicycle on our roads without hi-viz - they have nowhere near the speed to sit in traffic as a motorbike - so you are totally reliant on dumb cage drivers (and dumb motorbike riders, truck drivers ...) to see you ... more reliant than a motorcycle ...
I like to stay alive ... I've got this far now so I might as well enjoy a few more years ... dead is dead whether it is your fault or someone else's fault ..

It's not about safety, it's about the bureaucracy being seen to do something.

You're not wrong about that! That's a whole industry in itself of consultants, researchers, assistants, legal types, clerks, and of course, the politicians.
I think the old adage "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." should be modernised and changed to "Those who can, do. Whose who can't, talk."

Haha, yeah, I cycle to uni due to the traffic and affordability, and often wear a hi vis cycling shirt. But, thats my choice, there are days when I can't wear it or I don't think my trip warrants it etc, I don't feel it should be mandated on me.
As for bike riding two plus abreast, thats just being inconsiderate and stupid, although, it does make them easier to see?...

Last night on TRTNR two cyclists were riding two abreast in the shoulder of SH2 just north of Belmont, with the outer rider just inside the white line. A bus was about to pass them in left hand lane as myself and others were passing the bus in the outside lane. Now cyclists expect 1.5m gap don't they ? The bus moved over to the edge of the lane, but if the driver had given 1.5m he would have been in the outside lane, with us.
I hope the cyclist was happy that the bus was bloody close to them when passing, because there simply wasn't the space to provide 1.5m.
A Hi VIs would have done nothing to alleviate that situation. It's not necessarily about being seen - its about using your brain, something a lot of cyclists don't seem to do from what I've seen.

An observation is that, there seems to be more and more motorcyclists wearing Fluoro vests. Not those cheap 'flapping around I work at the the airport' ones, the snug fitting ones.
Personal choice, should never be made mandatory, another observation is, this subject has been chew over and spat out so many times since 09'.

Heh, Flouo vest would have to be made out of dragon scale armour to make a difference when you place yourself and your bicycle in the path of a mother-fucking truck.
Don't put yourself in the place of danger fuckball, and if you do, don't complain when you get deaded. Your choice, you own the consequences.
And yeah, I'm a cyclist, Just done a 10km lap, Didn't wear flouro, didn't pull in front of any trucks, Managed to get home in much the same state of awesomeness as when I left.

Hadn't seen these before, may look into getting one at some point.
And yeah, I guess it half depends on what conditions/area you're biking in too. Both for powered and non powered bikes really. I live in the city (Or whats left), can't beat a cycle around here
