Yeah definitely a noticeably lower crowd number than previous. Might have been related to the $30 ticket price! Not to mention them wanting another $2 for a programme. Hmm. Well at least it made it easier to get around. Was a typical Paeroa scorcher!

I was there. It was a lot more crowded than appears in the pictures. I thought at first it was perhaps a few less people than previous years but then decided it was maybe that more were getting off the footpath and into shade.
Still hard to edge along the footpaths for the crowds. And the pubs were pretty full.
The bike park areas actually seemed fuller than last year.

Smaller fields than usual, especially the motards.

I agree. I thought that the event was practically deserted. Hell at 3pm, you had the choice of viewing positions anywhere on the front straight. There seemed alot of bikes around, but naff all people.
The quietest Paeroa I have ever been too, so far...

They had more than nice bums . I'd use those legs to keep my neck warm ...
I thought the crowd size was about the same as usual ... maybe a little down ... but still hard to get a good view spot in most places ... hard to walk down the footpaths ...
A good day's racing (apart from the bad incident on the track)

Not sure - we arrived while it was very quiet on the track ... the announcer finally said there had been "an incident" and it was delayed in getting that sorted ..
Someone I talked to said a rider had dropped it and been hit very hard on the helmet by a following bike ... I have no idea of the outcome ... it didn't sound good. Whether that was the incident the annoucer was referring to I don't know ... but there was certainly an ambulance on the track when I arrived and it took a while to get everything back up and running - that usually indicates a very serious incident ..

I got there around 11:00 to hear there'd been a bad accident,,racing got going again about 12:00.
Smallest crowd I've ever seen and we watched from several different places "ending up at the 50 meter mark end of main st.
Was another accident that saw one rider taken away by ambo around 3:00,,,guy hit the ground F'ing hard an never moved again:(,,,hope he's ok.
Great day out but I might skip it next year unless the fields increase and the price comes down.

I saw the "Incident", several of them actually including the one getting his head runned over, was 10 or so metres away. Not a nice picture to have in my head still... Anyway I had to leave about 4 I seriously struggled with the heat! Also got myself worked up trying not to hit one of the fence posts when I was leaving the reserve in front of all the bikers! For $30 should have got a bloody programme too I thought!!

The people I talked to that were running the bbqs said numbers were down big time on previous years. I asked if they had any thoughts. They suggested that is was the $30??????? I reckon $30 is pretty good value. Would have like to see more trade stalls.
Why were numbers down????

The Mrs n I hadnt been since '08 and felt the considerable ease of finding a vantage point to watch our favourite corners. Queing for beer in the pubs was less time consuming by far.
I bet the rave organisers are facing bigger costs for consents etc. 'cause a 50% hike in admision is otherwise contrary to attracting more spectators...probably the V8's took a couple thousand fence sitters away...
The Coro loop diversion was worth the expense as always :headbang:

It has become harder to get decent pics now with the wire fences everywhere.... I'm sure I got better ones with a film camera 10 years ago..

To be put off by a pitiful $30 admission fee is pathetic.
Competitor entries were $150, I did a full top end overhaul on one bike in the week prior, at whatever they cost, my teams used more than $70 worth of race gas, several hundred worth of tyres & several hundred in repairs resulting from competing at Paeroa, in the weeks to come.
Not to mention two of my riders who flew from Australia to compete.
Seriously, thirty fuckin dollars. Get over yourselves.

I guess it comes down to priorities.
Some people would rather spend $30 on lotto tickets that they have more chance being run over crossing the road to buy, than winning & never complain about that, some would rather spend it on a day's entertainment.

Somehow got out of a gate and ran down the track, then couldn't get back through, so turned around and went back. By that time we're all noticing and the gate man is nabbing him.
I had reins and a harness when I was a child... now I know why...

For sure. I'm still waiting to win lotto too, but it's proving hard seeing as I never buy a ticket ;) I thought it was worth it personally, esp as I don't get out to events hardly ever. Next time I will prepare better though, the heat was unbearable!

the Christian Motorcycle Association use a hall that looks out onto the back straight and have decent toilets and cold water all day long most years, that's a good place to spend the hottest part of the day. not sure whether they were there this year though

Oy tink it was $25 last year. Would not bat an eyelid at $50. Paeroa & similar NZ races are one of the very few opportunity's world wide to push the fence & watch street racing. A whole day of getting your ear drums burst, watching & smelling NZ's finest nutters old & young on a spectacular array of machinery equally old & young from just a few feet away with a pint in your hand? Priceless.

I think 30$ was ok, it's great to be so close to the riders passing at 200+ kph, seeing such diverse bikes racing together and I've got respect for all the riders. Exspecially for the riders of the red old school sidecar that were trashing it every corner, they were worth the 30$ by themselves.
And it's cool to see 10 years old SV650s still there trying hard and sounding awesome. Love that vtwin sound.
It's good that you could drink ALCOhOL without feeling like a kid trying to hide the porn magazines. And there's plenty of options for cheap booze and food everywhere, and you can pay cash or use any card you want, no big corporations monopoly as it's too often the case in Auckland.
BUT that fucking 2$ program was just wrong. I didn't have cash with me (bought ticket online) and I couldn't give the kid 2 bucks. Didn't know all day what was happening (PA system was awful) and couldn't find out who won what.
Is there a website where they explain the different classes? There was an old yamaha racing with the BMW 1000 that I still don't understand why it was there

Good on the guys and girls for getting out on track and doing what alot of other people should be doing instead of doing it on the road.
Even the people who finished at the back of their respective races deserve alot of credit for having the guts to go through the effort of "qualifiying" to race there. Alot of time, effort and money goes into it for some that amounts to about twelve minutes of actuall race time. Is it worth it?
I would say so, once at least.
More people need to get into it, they are are a great bunch of people to talk to, and like most motorcyclists happy to help if they can.
I hope to line up on the grid myself 2014. Even if it is towards the rear.

Speaking of old nutters...
I was at the bottom of the front straight -right opposite fathers tavern, and had an awesome view all day. I could see up the straight all the way to the kink, and round the corner up to the off camber corner up the hill. Soo good.
unfortunatley I saw the bad crash in the last Formula Paeroa that saw both riders go to hospital. :eek5:
But I also saw that CRAZY bastard in the post classic sidecars on the old trumpy. He was absolute nuts! :headbang: Sideways all day from the braking area on the straight, all the way areound farthers tavern, and up an over the off-camber corner. he had some cojonies that guy. you would have to have a death wish to be a swinger for him. But such a good day, I will be back next year, and I hope all the riders pull through OK.

Our little coterie could not make it this year:( but that is exactly why I love it so much. All the characters on the track. Another classic side car last year had the swingers shoulder smoking going through the kink on the main straight and his hemlet knocking a bit of hay from the bails. You can't see that from a grandstand!
Oh, not to mention the hilarity in the pits when someone has get off the bike from one race & make the grid for the next one in time.
I will remember to carry loose change for a programme next year.

I remember that chair team from last year. Saw them doing that a few laps coming out of the hairpin - I was standing next to a couple from Aussie who came to Paeroa every year as they just couldn't see racing like that back home. Watching those hell-for-leather shoulder draggers right up close through the deer fence reminds you how lucky we are to have such great bike racing events in NZ.

You could of gone to Hampton Downs the week before and seen it for $20.
Plus It's not just the $30.
That one day of limited field racing where the bikes actually cost me a little over $100 an that was doing it on the cheap.
For somebody on a limited budget,,that $100 will effect my budget for the next 3 weeks.
If the people running the show want to turn it into a "rich only" thing,,,,well good for them but they better not expect me to give a shit when "they" go belly up.
Also what it costs the competitors means diddly squat to somebody struggling to make ends meet,,,I don't have a fucking sponser so next year I think I might take the cheaper option and go watch the cars at HD,,and the classics at HD,,,spend less money an get twice the show.
Actually,,,Fuck Paeroa,,,I can't afford to rebuild "my" race bike,,,dick!

$30 is sweet for such an awesome event. Didn't go this year as had other stuff going on. Think everyone has gotten used to static prices but forgotten about the operating costs. PMCC club member told me it costs $2K to have St Johns at Taupo for the weekend. Something like Paeroa must be huge expenses with traffic management plan and road closures etc, hiring all those cones and barriers aint cheap either.
The only thing I'd ask for is the pedestrian bridge like at Wanganui, thats an epic idea.
Love how all the shops stay open, me and a mate discovered the Ohinimuri club few years back and usually have lunch and a beer in there for a break, great service.

Not sure of his age but I do know he's raced at every Paeroa meeting there ever was. I was in their pit when Erics son Rick spoke about getting onto racing but Mum quickly put the kybosh on that idea.

Went to Paeroa and loved it. Even though I had to go home 3/4 through the day. As for the program, I bought a tee shirt, that got me a free program.
I too would like to race Paeroa, in 2015. But the missus who is very supportive of my track racing, was less impressed with the idea of doing Paeroa.
Went to HD for the Classic too. but spent much of the time drooling on the bikes in the pits instead of watching the racing.
So I guess the fact that I was able to go to both meetings (as a spectator) makes me "super ritch"! Yahoo, now if only I could find where I put all my wealth, then I too could rebuild my race engine. Until then I'll just do what I can and keep on enjoying it. I wont bother bitching about it.

Eric is the man for sure. Funny how those bikes look so slim and tiny now, but when I was young we thought they were so big and mean.

I see there is a video of Eric up on Youtube - love the old rattly engine sound of the two stroke. Some nice passing under brakes there too Eric:

I posted earlier about Eric Bone. I found this the other day, I'm sure Merv will remember ?
A very young G.Crosby next to him as a mechanic.
