Slingshot
15th August 2005, 10:27
Hi all,
This is following on from the other thread I started (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=15479).

Sunday 2 October has received the most votes so is now the offical date.

The route is yet to be confirmed but we will be meeting at Caltex Rimutaka at 10am and heading away from there at around 10:30am.

I'll post more details in here as they come to hand.

I'll also add this to the events calendar as well. (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=547&day=2005-10-2)

I WISH!!! The bike I was supposed to get fell through and the money I saved up for my bike licence had to be used for my oldest daughter's ballet lessons and gear...she's a super-jesus-cute ballerina :D

Nah, VTWIN has offered me the small backseat of his bike....:Punk:

Ok - booked in. Wet weather alternative the next weekend? Sounds like a good plan.

I've just added a roll-call to the calendar so can you pop back in there and click off if you're coming.

Now it looks like we have a tail gunners for the sight seeing group, thanks Paul in NZ. Sels1, which group did you want to bring up the rear on?

Any volunteers for a leader of the average and sight seeing groups? The fast guys should be able to look after themselves.

More detail to come...start praying to the biker gods for good weather that weekend.

Well atleast no one can say they didn't have enough notice of when this rides on.

I might even have enough time to save up the rego for the bike by then and the WOF doesnt run out till November.

Put me down as a maybe.

Is this going to be a big event or just another Wellington weekend ride?

Anyone from further north might find this one more appealing.

Now summers here we are really becoming spoilt for choice with events and rides.

Hello, I'm in Oamaru today (Got snowed on in CHCH yesterday - :cold: )

Thought I would throw this idea in - re lunch on this ride - the F/Fish can be swamped when a large group turn up. On a recent ride with a group quite a few people went over to the Pukemanu Pub and had a reasonable feed. Perhaps we could let them know we are coming. Paul etc any comments??

Good point Sels, and being one of those that wandered over to the Tavern, I can recommend the food wholeheartedly.

The other options were fush 'n chups in the square or a BBQ somewhere...but the pub sounds grand.

I'll give them a call the week before we ride out and let them know we're coming.

Aaah - yeah. Know about that!

One indicator isn't an essential though for a one off ride! I'm assuming it's the front one. I've got a spare temporary one if you can be bothered wiring it in - it's the same as mine (little oval one) but this one has rather distrubing fake carbon fibre on it. Prob more hassle than it's worth but if it means it can be done in time...

gromit

Im with Velox on this one. It wouldnt be hard at all to do a bodge job with her spare indicator as a temporary measure. :blip: Nothing like being on your own bike... Twist the wires, bit of *cough* duct tape if necessary... :2thumbsup

I scored some bright green duct tape (good ole Pak n Save) to match my bike when I strapped the camera on for Manfeild... if you did a decent job it might not be such a "temporary" feature :)

Then again, think of the aerodynamic advantage that having no indicator provides

So do you have some photos or video from that event you could post? Or have you already done that...I don't know how to get it from video to computer, but I can easily do a few stills. Problem is it's not that exciting in still form, mounted to the tank looking at the dials and track ahead. And on Manfeild I'm only getting 220 max so even the speedo is not too exciting.

Is the video on a Mini DV tape? If so, I could capture it from the tape and compress it to post on KB.

talking about muffler's.. i think mine was the worsestestest!!!

the ONLY thing holding it on was the little bit of metal ( and i mean the litletest bit of weld any one has ever seen) by the rear mount.....how it never fell off is any one's guess!!!:grouphug:

Mr Slingshot, do you have a copper and black F3? I was following one on SH2 from Petone to Ngauranga yesterday (Sunday). Pillion on the back I recall.

If it was I'm afraid that the CBR was blowing a bit of oil. Smelt almost unburnt, and was constant rather than on over run or acceleration.

Caltex Rimutaka is the meeting point.
When you get onto SH2, continue to head towards Upper Hutt. Don't turn off any where, just keep following your nose along SH2. Eventually, on your left, you'll see a Caltex station. That's where everyone will be meeting.

Caltex Rimutaka is the meeting point.
When you get onto SH2, continue to head towards Upper Hutt. Don't turn off any where, just keep following your nose along SH2. Eventually, on your left, you'll see a Caltex station. That's where everyone will be meeting.
Cheers Slingshot. see ya there - Weather permitting...

Weathers looking 'interesting'. The winds going to change several different directions the next couple of days. Plenty of high winds too by the looks of it. What we need is someone who works in the meteorlogical industry that is a technician for this kinda stuff ;).

Ok, the lastest forecast is - strong NWesterlies Sat, dying out probably overnight with fine period Sun morning (Yay) there is a cold Southerly front due sometime on Sun but not expected to later in the day or early evening.
So most of our riding time should be ok as the NW winds die out and move around to Sth. (Be prepared for a possible shower, but not really expected at that time) Will update later in the week.

Looks cool. I have been on a very large before and they had a designated 'tail end charlie' whos job was to not pass anyone and make sure that nobody got lost and had a bad day. Do you think its worth doing this on this trip?

You need to read the first post Mr Kelly.

There will be 3 groups (fast, medium, and *sigh* will you people hurry the f__k up??), each with a designated lead, whom you do not pass, and a tail-end charlie, who does not pass.

No worries.

It's funny how your perceptions of what amounts to fast, medium, and "slow" changes on a ride like this.

The fast guys arrive, tripping, hair on fire, and stand about with a thousand yard stare. The medium group arrives 3 minutes later, buzzing, laughing, and once helmets are off, doing the, "did you see that?" talks. The slow group then rock up 2 minutes later, erect in the saddle, quietly park their bikes, and even if it is 30 degrees C, aren't sweating, and have no obvious adrenaline side effects going on.

Guess what? Every still has exactly the same amount of fun.

There will be leaders of each of the groups and tail end Charlies as well. I'll look for volunteers on the day to lead the groups and to bring up the rear.

The idea is that if you find yourself in a group that is riding beyond your abilities, pull over, siginal to the group that you're ok and then wait for the next group and join them.

If the group you've set out with is too slow, continue riding with them until the next re-group point, then join the next faster group.

Common sense will prevail on the day (hopefully).

The key thing is saftey...with this number of riders it's got to be the number one concern!

How many large group rides have you organised? How many people's day have you seen fucked up by having to take someone to hospital and then go back and pick their bike, or worse, bikes up?

Thought so.

If you don;t want to participate, then don't, but don;t screw up someone else's day because you, "can't live by rules man."

If you're gonna be an arse stay hom, and if you'd like to "actually read(tm)" my posts I think you'll see that I'm not hassling the slow riders. As I said in my subsequent post, people's perceptions of what amounts to slow are somewhat different to reality.

Not only will there be others "like" you, there are people who enjoy a quiet ride that will be in your group who have ridden for years. There will be a sweep in your group who will be an experienced rider, who's job it is to make sure you guys are OK. It isn't school, or prison, but people have chosen to organise a ride, and show you some cool roads you can check out by yourself later on, and of course enjoy a social outing.

Wow - what a great day's riding!

I'm at home now having finished dinner, the body's completely worn out - a bit of lactic acid overdose I reckon and the bloody sugars are a bit low but it's all worth it.

Some great roads and the weather was just right. I was in the "medium" group, led by Jim2. A non-eventful moderate speed ride over the Rimutakas, then turn at Featherston to go down past the lake, then the east-west road (where the sprints are held) and up to Martinborough for a great lunch at the Pukemanu Pub.

After that, the Gladstone-Watertower Road. If you've never done the Watertower Road, do yourself a favour and get down here. A great test for any rider at whatever speed you ride, and it has some of the best hillside sweepers I've ever ridden and a great downhill ride. A couple of seconds of quiet reflection as we went past the corner just before Gladstone where Sam died, and on to Masterton. On the straight between the two hills I found out what the RF was capable of, and a quick stop for gas (11.18 litres for 170km - not too bad fuel consumption at all!) then a neat quiet road that Jim2 knew about to get us through the Wairarapa, then back over the takas - just at the wrong time of day. By that stage I'd completely given up on the whole medium speed thing and the cars were just getting irritating - in fact one tried to take out Jim2 and nearly succeeded...

But we got back safe, tired and happy and with a whole lot less rubber on the tyres than when we started.

When's that next ride fellas?

Was a good ride today. Gave it a bit of a nudge going up the Hill at the rear end of the medium group and ended up having a good run (car-wise). Was good to talk to a few people at the pub (had plenty of time thats for sure). Headed out to Gladstone/Masterton with VTWIN, Velox, BL, Dafe, Sparky etc. Have to say am getting sick of trying to catch up to the big boys :). Sp thanks to Dafe for hanging at the back. A quick gas up and a decision to head straight home. A good nudge up the hill on the way home (hope I didnt hold you guys up back there!) and got home dry. Ears ringing.

Thanks Mr Shot!

Cheers mate for organising the ride today. Bloody well done! :niceone:
It was my 1st KB ride and what a great bunch of folks I met today. Just got home myself after a couple of quiet ones at the Sand Bar with some folks I meet today.
Thanks again and I hope to catch up with all of you again somewhere, sometime.

Hear hear!! Nice one and thanks a lot. Had a cracking time and really good to meet some great people. (Thanks Sean for coming over this morning!)

Had a fantastic ride - apart from a slightly hairy moment early on..
Anyway, first time on those roads, new bike to me, and first ride with KB'rs.

The day was just great.

Hey Old Farts

Nice to meet you both. I had a great day that was finished off beautifully by pulling into my driveway just as the rain started! Look forward to seeing the photo of the mighty purple Maurader soon.

Well done Slingshot for getting everybody out togeather.
Nice new wheels dude.
After a bit of mooching about at the pub a few of us were itching to put some miles down so we headed off out the back of MBorough.
Bad Lieutenant had a vid cam taped to his bike so that promoted a bit of the hooligan to come out.......sorry Skelstar, you'll just have to go and get that 900 :bleh: .
Good to see so many new and familiar faces. Great to see StoneChucker out for a socialise. And Str8 Jacket to show us all that she is still alive :doctor: and talking.

Yeah at 140km/h my bikes doing about 10,000RPM (pr at least 9.5), redline is at 11,500RPM. Its pushing it a bit. My mechanic said the bike was geared too long. Yeah right! :)

Well wasn't that just marvelous! I met a whole bunch of KBers (some of whom I've forgotten names already - it's an age thing - sorry) I'd never met before and learned a bunch of stuff about how to quietly crush someone's ego - eh Fryin Finn? :)

Str8jacket was retaining water and couldn't ride her bike, so she joined Paul in NZ and Stonechucker for a trip to the Pukemanu Tavern for lunch and excellent company. I hadn't taken any pictures at this stage, but Str8jacket reminded me that all KB ride pictures are a bit "samey", so I set out to get a couple of shots that were more about the people and the roads.

We had a huge mix of bikes and riders, ages, and capabilities, from Jeremy on the back of Dad's GTR1000 (really good kid - took the mickey out of himself when he found he'd put his shirt on backwards) through to fellas who prove the maxim, "youth is no replacement for experience". I was informed that I was leading the medium pace group, so I spent the trip over the Rimutakas being hassled by Norton Commandos and XJR1300s.

The Pukemanu Tavern's Garden Bar was swamped by KBers, but the kitchen managed to process us all. As you can see from the pictures it was quite the turn out.

Did you manage to snap one of me & Mrs S coming down that hill?

The weather report was vaguely dodgy and it clouded over while we were at the pub. The sun poked its head out as soon as we decided to leave though, and as we'd shed some riders we picked the pace up a little. Our wee group had 2 x R6s (Niiiiice biiiike Slingshot, maaaaaate!), XJR1300, FZ1, RF900, SV650, a ZX636, VTR1000, and a BMW R100RS. 4 of the bikes had pillions (Slingshot's R6, and the last 3 bikes listed) and they all seemed to be having a cracking time.

Well, except Madboy and Mrs Madboy. You'll note that their photo below (lime green 636) is blurry. Nothing to do with shutter speed or aperture, and more to do with their mutual hangovers and slight disconnection from our reality.

The photos below were taken at the bottom of the other side of the Water Tower road, part of which is used for the NZ National Hill Climb champs. Very nice track that.

The wick got turned up for the ride into Masterton, but I still couldn't shake that bloody XJR. It was a bloody good trip all in all, and I was thrilled to meet Slingshot's bike, and to meet and ride closely with Fryin Finn. Very smooth, quick and safe. He also wanted to give the pilot of the Hilux SR5 who tried to run me off the road a seeing to, so he must be a good bloke.

Good stuff Slingshot, thanks for jacking that up, and well done on the turn out.

Hey btw - Was your bike from Sawyers? If it is, it used to belong to a mate of mine and crazylittleshit's. Heh heh - which I've taken it out boyracer baiting a couple of times :devil2:

Quick report:
A few of us left Caltex kind of early on partly because we didn't want to get stuck behind the huge TSS group on the hill (pretty impressive turnout for them too!) and partly because it didn't seem like the briefing was going to happen (sorry Slingshot - perhaps we should have waited a bit longer). But we didn't realise that everyone else was going down around the lake so we just went to the pub and waited for ages for everyone to eventually turn up. And mate - what a pub! Such a laugh! The decor and bar stools were a total relic from the not-too-distant-enough past and there were 80's music videos playing on the TV!!! And "Blue senior" had his name on the wall for winning the Tui comp for the week. Loved it.

Anyway, kept riding, did the water-tower road, passed a swannie-clad crowd outside the Gladstone Pub for the pig hunting comp, then went to Wild Oats. Great cafe, they're obviously really trying to get bikers in there because they've occassionally given KBers free nibbles and they're set up a "Visor Cleaning Station" right in the middle of the cafe with a sign, paper towels and cleaning stuff!! Awesome eh?! Def worth supporting I reckon (if only their food was a bit cheaper though). Hooned back over the hill, had a slightly disturbing moment involving a rear tyre a corner and a greasy road, then on the way back home I finally bought some leather pants - woohoo (cheers Phleep)(you can all stop hassling me now)..

Really good to see a whole bunch of people - the usuals plus a whole lot of people I hadn't met before! :2thumbsup

Phew!! - when I saw you take that picture behind me Jim I thought my bum might look too big - but you must have taken the photo from a flattering angle.
I really enjoyed the day specially the rark over the Tuka's and to put a few faces to the names on the web site. It's good to ride with riders of similar speed and compare the different lines the XJR takes compared with Norton Commando's and R6's.
The chicken was undercooked but havent had any accident's in the toilet department - so my bod must have effectively disposed the nasty bugs inherent in such produce.

Going around the lake was a last minute decision, mainly so we could avoid the TSS group but also because it's a great road.

He's got a 04 (I think) Fireblade now. Did the shop keep that scuff stop stuff on it or did they rip it all off? It looks beeeeeautiful though eh. One of the best looking paint jobs I've seen *she says surpressing jealous comments*. How are you finding it - is it heaps diff to the CBR?

They took most of it off but left a piece on either side of the lower front fairing (which we'll leave there) and a couple of peices around the back of the tank, one of which we took off and the other bit that we're yet to take off.

It's a totally different bike and it's going to take a little while to get use to it me thinks.

Nothing quite like the thwack of a focal-plane shutter. I have programmed our digital camera to make that noise when it's fired. How sad is that?

If anybody is into old focal-plane shutter equipment, I've got a couple of Minolta camera bodies and a swag of Rokkor lenses that I never seem to use any more. One body is an SRT Super (the North American version of the legendary 303b), the other is an X300, which has a three-frames-a-second motor drive unit. Lenses -- a variety from a 28mm f3.5 to a 135mm f3.5 and a couple of zoom lenses as well.
