View Full Version : Wellington: WGTN "Newbie/cautious" ride 21 August

Str8 Jacket
15th August 2005, 11:30
Following on from Nomes suggestion that us "cautious" riders get together and do the Taka's in preparation for the KB ride in October, thought i'd see who was still keen? (weather dependant?) If the weather is anything like the weekend just passed it'll be an awesome ride! :Punk:

Here's the plan/times etc . . . (compliments of Paul in NZ)

Townie's to meet @ WMCC @ 9.45 to leave @ 10, then onto Caltex Rimutaka to pick up the "others" leaving @ 10.45. See you all there!

Im still keen. Weather dependant and all that.

Had a great ride over Paekakariki hill on the w-end. Bit windy (as in breezy) but was a good ride.

I only managed to get a ride around the bay's - bikes going for first service tomorrow and was already sitting at around 950 on the clock so didn't wanna risk it. Was an awesome weekend for riding too - damn it all!

Skelstar - I'll definatley be going over the Taka's on Sun whether the interest is minimal or not . . . .

Sounds good.
Do we have an ambition? Some Martinborough cafe is usually the destination of choice isnt it...Flying Fish or something?

Str8 Jacket

Do we have an ambition?

Well I know that I lack ambition . . . But a destination is definately a good idea, I know im gonna need to stop for awhile . . .
Even though ive been in Wgtn for 3 years now im still pretty lost in and around wgtn, so maybe you could think of a good meeting place, destination etc?

Mate, anyone is welcome - just be aware that most of us haven't ever ridden up the hill, and that at least a couple of us will be on Mighty GN250's. But yea, the more the merrier!

I'll come along if you guys want someone who is a regular Hill rider.

If it is going to be a crispy morning on the 21st you probally want to make it 10am so that some of the shady corners on the Takas have time to dry out.

Paul in NZ
15th August 2005, 12:56
If Vicki and I tagged along you could all bend her ear about how wonderful GN250's are etc etc... Hmm Looking at the current trend in fuel prices 2 bikes might not be such a swell idea though!

Gulp... We might have to share a GN....

(thinks)

Might be busy that day.... (ah hem)

Str8 Jacket
15th August 2005, 13:02
VTwin - Awesome, be good to have some "experienced" riders to help show us the way and give feedback etc. Im thinking that 10am or a bit later sounds good!

PaulNZ - Me thinks we could manage that! Better watch out tho cause if we rave too much, you mite end up with 2 GN's. . . lol!

I dunno if thats such a good idea Sels1. With your recent record of illegal and reckless speeding I'm not sure that your best pillion would be safe on the beemer.... :nono: (pt)

Heh heh....

If that didn't put her off forever the leaving Kapiti at 9:20 to get to Caltex by 10 would, if we get another 'crisp' morning. I was wondering why I was looking for a 3rd dog last night.. Brrr.... Glad to be in the car this morning...

Ok, someone has to help me out here. Obviously we need a meeting place (suggestions needed). . .SOMEWHERE IN TOWN PLEASE!! lets say meet there @ 10 - leave @ 10.15 for those of us that are prone to lateness. Then I guess we'll need a second meeting place to pick up the people that live out of town. And go from there. Whatdya reckon?

Just a suggestion but....

Why don't the 'townies' to meet up at 9:45am (outside Wellingtom M/c's), all fuelled up and ready to rock and roll....

If you all leave at 10:00 you should make Caltex Rimutaka by 10:30 where the Kapiti contingent can meet you, talk a load of old toot and leave there at 10:45...

Regroup at the top of the hill so we can show off our steely gazes (and assorted heroic accoutriments which will vary with gender and age but not usually race) and draw admiring gazes from the general populace and assorted fanboys and camp followers....

Decamp from the top of the hill once everyone has calmed down and head for martinborough (3 laps of the square please) where we will enjoy a splendid lunch and mediocre coffe..

From there we could back road to greytown for a bit of gawking at shops selling overpriced crap while I sit (somewhat grumpily) and suck up better coffee...

Then head home over the terrible hill to get home early and in time to relax in a nice bath with a glass of bubbly...

Im surprised at how much interest a "newbie/cautious" ride has generated to be honest!! But YES YES and YES anyone and everyone welcome, it's definately good to have as much feedback etc about the ride as possible, so please don't anyone be disuaded by the title of the thread.

What im hoping is that someone can come up with a good meeting place/s etc then those that want to join the ride can just meet us there . . . I would think of somewhere myself, but as I mentioned earlier I realy don't know my way around Wellys

There really are a lot of people that ride bikes that don't want to tear about the place on the rev limiter ALL the time, hence the attraction...

A gentle bimble over the hill on a nice sunny late winters day is just the ticket!

Hmm, maybe you just need to toughen up, ah?! (pt)

Be good if you could meet me @ WMCC, cause if no one else does then I won't be going anywhere - I wouldn't have a clue how to get to Caltex Rimutaka, let alone how to get to the Taka's.

Ah! A flaw in the plan...

Let me know if no one else (that knows the way) joins in as we could be talked into coming into town (reluctantly). It's very simple.

Wellington M/C. Head towards the basin reserve then throw a U turn and get onto Wakefield St and follow all the way to the cake tin. Get up the motorway on ramp and out onto the motorway towards the Hutt Valley.

get into the middle lane and keep heading to the Hutt valley...

Stay on shw 2 all the way to upper hutt

Caltex Rimutaka is the HUGE petrol station on the left just before the Akatarawa turn off...

Cheers

How about WMC for the first meeting place. 9:45
Bottom of Maungaraki hill for the second. 10:15
Caltex Rimutaka for the third. 10:45

That gives time for people who miss the first meet(s) are able to catch up.

Quite so. If there were such a thing in Dorkland *I* might even go along.Being a newbie, AND cautious to boot. Hm [hears voice in distance - "well why the fark don;t you organise it the "]

I'll think about it. Sort of a Roadsafe on the actual road. Maybe tie in with Mr Waylander's idea of a cruiser ride. Having fun != breaking every speed limit on the books. (Well, not ALWAYS, anyway)

Yes, well the thought had crossed my mind last night and then I forgot about doing anything about it - duh! Um well, how about we set a "postponment" (sp?) date for the following Sunday, anyone have any issues with that? Also I have the problem of not being able to access a computer out of working hours (mon-fri 7am-3.30) so if someone who has access to a pc at home would be willing to maybe either pm me with their phone number or vice versa so if the weather is dubious on he day then they could let me know if you lot are still going or not? I have visions of sitting at WMCC all on my lonesome wondering why everyone forgot me, when in fact no one is actually going . . .

Hey St8, I'll probably end up going regardless (unless there's thunder and lightning). My gear (will wear plastic bags on inside of shoes...no one will ever know until they hear me walk!) is reasonably waterproof...and I need as much experience in all clemencies (tee hee) too.

Maybe. But I won't leave you sitting at WMCC regardless.

I just realised that I only got to ride with the group for about 50m in the end - down the main road in Carterton and round the corner to that leather shop! (Cheers for showing me where it was Uncle! :D ) Experienced "Wild Oats" for the first time though - loved the set up and all the 'stuff' they had, but it was pretty expensive for a student! Sounds like you all had a good ride - we had a real nice run out the back there too.

What a great days riding.
Good to meet the "newbies", Str8 Jacket, skelstar, the dude on the DR200.....and to catch up with the "oldies", Jim, sels, Paul & aunty Velox.

That was fantastic. Not so sure about Buell XB12R's now. ;)

Excellent fun ride, though sorry I didn't hang around with the newbies. VTWIN and I had scenery to obliterate.

Guys, I'm sorry we didn't catch up with you in Masterton for a coffee, we had to get to Martinborough rapidly. Thought we might see you on the hill at the summit on the way back but no. :(

Looked like a heck of a lot of fun. Thanks VTwin for putting up with me gushing over your SV (mmmm....). Did ya see the Mustangs on the side of the road??

Funny thing was that when you came and talked to me I didnt know who you were, then I wasnt sure...until you took your helmet off anyway. Your glasses were tinted which made it a bit more difficult.:)

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone, I had a great day and didnt feel to silly on my bike. The hill was much more fun than those long straights. All I need now is a few more CC's (and hair maybe).

I could SO tell that you were having trouble recognising me in my gears. I was wondering how to 'charade' Eurygnomes (actually pronoucned "you RIN oh mees") and then remembered that I could just remove my helmet. And then I made a total idiot of myself to VTwin...forgetting his name and all .

First indication we had of the approaching KBers was the 2-up Motoguzzi coming around a corner and us zipping past. We watched you in the mirror though...and once we saw lights, knew that we didn't have to turn around! :)

Oh, and Str8...don't you mean that I'll just keep uninviting myself to rides that I've proposed!??!

Not even on Gem today :weep: as have boxes of stuff to cart around, am meeting Wolf and Stray for lunch in 45mins at Thai/Jap restaurant and am off to ChCh tomorrow morning. No rides for Nomes...:(

I thought the DR did pretty well considering your 'apprehension' at WMC.

Hehe, that was what was so ironic! Everyone that met me, saw the GN and where instantly like, "you must be Nomes". There were a few surprises when I told them you weren't coming. Don't worry me and Skelstar told them you had a valid excuse! I hope you had fun, the weather was beautiful!

I made up all sorts of excuses for you. "Shes agoraphobic", "heard YOU were coming so decided to stay at home...", "her dog ate her GN...honestly!".

You guy's were just leaving Caltex when Viv & I turned up, no one waited, nevermind we caught up to you at the top of the Taka's, said Hi & carried on.
We went round the lake & out to Lake Ferry for a coffee, returned via Martinborough where everyone was still having coffee. Glad everyone had a good day.
We may go out to Castlepoint next weekend weather dependent.

Oh no! Poor Str8 being mistaken for me! :) And thanks heaps Skelstar...much appreciated. I especially like the agorophobic comment, since one of the games we played on Sat night was 'make up phobias for the others'. The one that my best friend made up for me was sucraeropthalmophobia: irrational fear of lollies thrown at a lolly scramble taking out an eye! SO TRUE!!! I wince whenever anyone says "who wants a lolly" from a stage! :( :offtopic:

Anyway...I'm not sure I'll fit in organising (and then abandoning) another ride (or at least, having Str8 take over so brilliantly), but I hope to be on my bike this weekend...

thanks guys for showing us a good time and making us feel so welcome.
We were a little worried that we might not keep up but it was always a welcome sight to see you all waiting with a smile. She might be slow on the corners but we are fast learning to catch up on the straights :ride:
will look forward to our next run, and i will try and loose the yellow pants

I was gutted.
Was still up in Palmy on Sunday WITHOUT my road bike!!!
On the way home, all i saw were bikes passing me in the sunshine, looking like they were having soo much fun.

Im sooooooo coming next time. Its been too long since my last good road ride.

I'm going to be up in Palmy (bikeless and not at Manfeild though) but coming back sometime on Sun. Prob later rather than earlier but if it's still light I'll go for a hoon on the hill to kill my front tyre a bit more before it's changed. So might see you at the top or in passing but have fun!

Would love to have gone, but e-Riders are doing their monthly brunch ride. They're leaving caltex rimutaka at 0930 sunday morning and headed to wild oats, I owe a mate a Carterton Breakfast.
For any of the newbs keen to tag along, e-Riders is normally a 600cc above club for the less hoony types. Alot of couples with pillions on the back quite often. The pace is reasonably easy. Would be good to see some new faces if anybody is keen.
