What an awesome weekend!
Left Hastings Friday night to arrive at Ryan’s flat around 11pm. Dad continued to Paeroa staying a few kilometres from the town until morning. Once day light hit, Dad drove the bus with bikes to a prime location for the weekend.
Saturday was a bit uneventful, only being able to sign in and have the bikes scrutineered. Later in the day Ryan and I headed back to Hamilton for a good night’s sleep leaving Dad in Paeroa to guard the bikes.
Sunday morning was an early start up just after 5 so we could get some breakfast and get to the track before any crowds.
As this was my first time at Paeroa, along with the other newbie’s, I was allowed to do the ‘virgin’ laps to see what it was like, and man was it scary. I didn’t know what to expect as I haven’t done very much road riding but this was certainly like no other track I have ridden. It was so narrow and enclosed with people standing leaning over hay bales on both the inside and outside of corners.
Practise/ Qualifying, first outing I was just determined to stay calm and not do anything stupid. Finishing the whole days racing was my target for my first round at Paeroa. I was having to learn a lot in a very short amount of track time. The second outing I was feeling better but still quite nervous. I got the hang of keeping the throttle pinned down the front straight and just popping my head out into the wind to get through the kink which felt awesome once I mastered it but finding the first corning and pulling the bike up in time for it was a whole different challenge. I qualified in 12th place which I was happy with.
Race one was interesting. I couldn’t see the green flag on the start line so had to base my start on everyone else moving off. I chickened out a little bit into turn one so I didn’t get myself into any trouble. I tried to ride fast within reason without making any stupid moves. I started to get the hang of the jump off the intersection and was feeling better every lap. I finished in 11th place which moved me up one place on the grid for race two.
Race two, I was feeling really good. I got a great start and decided to keep on pushing. I made it through turn one in 7th place and was behind Mark Wigley for the first three laps. Three others made their way past and I didn’t try to defend my position. I happily finished in 10th place and 11th overall for the day.
I had an awesome time at Paeroa and will definitely be back next year.
