View Full Version : R1 on a quiet Friday

Here I was at work on Friday arvo winding down for the week and what happens in my town?
2000 R1 + disqauly rider + excessive speed (no, not 53kph, more like double) in a built up area + car pulling out of drive-way = recipe for disaster.
Car driver sees R1 honkin' along thinks 'shee-it' and decides to stop just out of drive-way waiting for R1 to veer towards centre-line and go around him
R1 rider spears straight ahead into right front wheel of car - leaving skittery dotted black lines on road and a patch of oil at impact point. (And brown ones in his grunds no doubt)
R1 rooted, car not too flash and rider? - a variety of injuries and awaiitng a blood-alcohol test result.
And awaiting ACC pay-out too no doubt.

Cager? I take it you mean 'car driver'. Why was it his fault? It's people like you who always look to blame others and not look at your own actions. Take some personal responsibility for once.

1st wrong - 2nd bit correct.
He saw him alright - but when he realised the approach speed of the bike ('seemed to be doing about 100k') which was not visible until close as it was over a rise he stopped dead, right-angles to kerb with his rear wheels in the guttter and waiting for the bike to swoop around him and carry on...

Serious crash unit said he has traveling at 100kph? I thought they didn't like to estimate bike speeds because there are too many variables to have a clue?

How accurately could anyone gauge the speed of a bike I wonder though.
I'm not onside with the rider, so don't start flaming me for being one the morons who want to blame anyone but him. I just wouldn't trust witness reports of speed, as far as I could throw said witnesses.
In all likelyhood the estimates are on the low side, an R1 is good for 140kph in first gear after all. I just don't think any inaccurate information should be admissible.

Anything is admissible on KB - after all you post here:lol:
But the guy was doing a semi-stoppie trying to stop - his rear wheel was leaving a black strip on the road each time it touched down.
And from first touch to impact was 43 metres.
So I doubt he was doing 50kph.

I'm not trying to wind anyone up, not trying to defend anything, I am merely asking the question.
This is KB, and I my question was more about what would happen come time for charges to be laid in the real world.

Charges?
Apart from riding when he already had his licence cancelled and possibly pissed there's enough info coming through (and not just for the crash) to lead to a dangerous driving charge.
\not that it matters but when he DID have a licence it was a 1R.

\not that it matters but when he DID have a licence it was a 1R.I'm sure if the judge is feeling cranky, his suspension total will exceed 12 months, and the fellow will need to go through the entire licence process from scratch. Doubt it'll change much though.

Nek Minnit a Honda 1100 cruiser arsed off the road in the Manuka Gorge the following day.
Too long since last ride (decades) on a borrowed bike, veered to far to the left on a right-hand bend, hit loose grit on the left of the fog-line and ta-da, shower of gravel and bits of bike and he came to rest.:eek5:
Bump on head (a tad concussed) and lots of gravel rash where his jeans failed to handle the friction.:pinch:
Jacket and gloves saved the rest of him.

Ok, I've just punched this data into a calculator. An experienced rider on good tyres on a dry surface, and with a perfect braking technique would stop in 43 meters from 100 kmh at 0.9G.
The same rider travelling at 120 kmh would still be doing 66.3 kmh at impact.
However it sounds like he wasn't an experienced rider, so lets work on only 0.5 G.
From 100 kmh he would still be doing 66.3 kmh at impact, the same as an experienced rider at 120 kmh.
To stop in 43 m the inexperienced rider would have to be going no more than 74 kmh.
So my guess is that the police estimate of 100+ would be fairly close to the mark.

shows how much variation there can be calculating speeds!
