View Full Version : Good place to get a chain for my GN250?

I think my chain has had it. I keep having to adjust it so often cause it keeps getting way too loose, just seems ridiculous. Further to that, it appears to be rusting. This should probably be blamed on the time I cleaned it cause it was so "icky" with degreaser in a can. Oh well... it's never had its chain changed anyway I guess. Where do I get a good chain/what am I meant to be looking for? I guess I want the chain and sprocket set, or whatever. My flatmate said he will help me (read, he will be forced) change my chain, don't really want to pay someone to do it cause I guess it's not necessary is it really? Anyway, where? price?!
Cheers

LUBE YOUR CHAIN... you should LUBE every time you fill up with gas. Or every time you check tire pressure... about once a week at least.

I don't think so, I think it already has too much lube, hence why it spits it all over my tyre rims, or wtf they're called. I've been told it's plenty lubed by a few guys. Har, har. But really, I have.

Trademe or your local bike shop, no need for a uber fancy mental spastic hyper XYZOPHK Ring chain on a GN, but not a retarded $40 job either.

Would it be cheaper/just as good whatever I get on trademe as what a bike shop would sell me?

Generally, yes.
But then somebody will yell and whinge at you for choosing where to spend your money and call you a lesbian or something?

not to be rude, but Ill be forward, you dont seem to know fuckall about the mechanical side, take it to a bike shop and get them to fit it for ya too. a chain for a GN is not going to be real expensive anyway

You mentioned it was rusty = symptom of lack of lube. Then you said you used degreaser on it... which removes lube.
Little tip: avoid the 'degreaser in a can' and clean your chain with an old toothbrush and a little jar with some turpentine in it. Remove the key to avoid accidents and mark a link of your chain with a sticky label or something so you know when you have been round it. I also like to get an old spray and wipe bottle with turpentine in it - after brushing use the spray bottle to 'rinse' the dirt off further then wipe with a clean rag. Then apply a light coating of your favourite (BIKE) lube.
In regards to it's replacement - as others said, go to the bike shop.

Yea thanks but please learn to read... my flat mate will be doing it for me. He does everything on his own (much more expensive, faster) bikes and is mechanically minded/inclined/whatever. So... I'm not paying for labour if it's not necessary, which it's not. I can only do small things I.e. change my oil/filter, brake fluid, tighten chain. Fucked if I'm gonna change the chain, that's what boys are for.

Ring a few shops (that are still open) ... ask for a price to buy AND fit ...

Please read... I've no intention of changing the chain myself, my flatmate will be doing it and is more than competent.
I know why it's gone rusty, hence me offering my reasoning I.e. degreaser in a can, so already telling me something I know... I cleaned it again last week with turps and lubed it, less than a week later or so, had rust and I only rode one day last week, my bike lives in the garage. It never did this before I "cleaned" it and no amount of lube will help it IMO. I've fucked it. No biggy though it's a 8yo chain that's almost doubled the ks it came with in 2 months. She's been working hard...

Changing the chain on a ginny is very straight forward :2thumbsup You flatmate will be able to teach you a valuable skill and stuff, and he's probably not going to be a knob and write silly messages because you're knew at bike maintenance ;)

His teaching method, so to speak, is frustrating and painful at times and I won't deny there have been tears and tantrums... his of course.... errm anyway at least I can do some stuff now and I am yet to break a nail?
And no, no frying pan. It's easier to comply than to put up with hours of bitching dun ya think? ;)

Oh FFS dive in and do it yourself. Your flattie or one of the Akl aging lothario’s will show you and how to gauge the condition of sprockets etc. The whole point of doing it yourself is to gain knowledge and become independent. If you are going to travel 2 weeks on this thing you best learn how to replace a chain and how a joining link works (a spare link and chain breaker are a good investment).
Before you buy a chain you need to know the size of the chain and the length (how many links).
Here is a good link on how you measure a chain size but be warned these are for old classics etc
http://www.sprocketsunlimited.com/Chainspecifications.html
or here
http://chain-guide.com/basics/1-1-1-structure-power-transmission-chain.html
I think a GN250 runs a 520 chain at 100 links (check your manual). Use latex gloves to keep the mess off your hands and you will be sweet as.

Expect to pay around $100 for a basic O ring chain.
If you find an O ring chain for much less than that it is most likely a shit quality chain out of China.

Now, now, calm down ;) Yes my flatty will be doing it, but as with everything else, I will be watching/learning. I am well aware of the importance/helpfulness of learning to do stuff myself which if you'd read my posts, you would see I am already doing I already adjust my own chain, change my own oil and filter etc... SO relax...
I am going to Holeshot hopefully some time this week, today maybe, to buy said chain and sprocket. But thank you :)

Only my post was excited... Trust me - I'm very calm when other people are working on their own bikes ;-)
Good onya for giving it a go but dive in and git yer hands on it... Nothing beats the tactile experience to touching the parts. Watching someone else do stuff to your bike is like watching crappy porn on the net instead of ... well you know....

Probably wasnt the flatmates idea of a 'dirty evening'......
If you have not done it a few times it can be horrible. Easy way is... (warning you might need to remove rear fastening of any chain guard and lift it out of the way with an old bungee etc)
Loosen chain adjusters and axle - move wheel forwards
Get bike with rear wheel in the air and free to turn (not essential but best)
Rotate wheel until joining link is on the rear sprocket. Lock back wheel with a wedge/block of wood etc.
Remove joining link and drop bottom part of the old chain down.
Attach new chain to the end of the old chain with joining link.
Pull top half of the old chain which should haul the old and new chain up through the front sprocket. Get the end of the new chain and remove old chain.
Join chain with new joining link.
Adjust chain and clean up...

He'd never changed a chain on a bike before, I didn't know that. He has only had fairly new (s1000rr at the mo) bikes and track bikes at that, and he (so he says) hasn't even done as much road riding as me in my 3 months in his 5-6 years of riding so it wasn't exactly a normal thing for him to do... Anyway we didn't have proper tools to cut the chain or to put the chain link (?????) together, took like 2-3 hours to get my chain on/change the back sprocket, we still haven't changed the front one, lol. Anyway in the end we found out that the chain adjuster on my bike had lost its thread, so the bolt was vibrating out, which is what made my chain loose... these have since been replaced...
