Hi everyone, pulled thefront fairings off to fix a crack and replace the rather crap bulb in the ZZR 1100 and found that i appear to be missing something- its part of the air intake assembly (see first pic) and is missing on the right hand side (when you are facing the bike).
What is it? and what is its function? can I get away with out it? Its the black bulbous thing on the left I assume there are meant to be 2?
Finally does anyone have a reccomendation of a good wrecker for Kwacks of this vintage (1995 zzr 1100 d5), I think there are a few bits an bobs that i need to find.
cheers

for a start that's left.
everything you diagnose on a bike/car/plane/boat/train/bus/unicycle/horse is spoken as though you are piloting it.
for a second is it part of the air intake?
if it is, then yes, if it isn't, then probably not.

I bet you can find a workshop manual download for free on thinternet. That will be better than getting advice on here,

That is an intake resonator. It has two possible functions, the first is to dampen or tune intake noise, the second is to fill in holes in your torque curve. Being a Kawasaki, with their addiction to intake roar, it's possible the first is the case. The only way to know for sure is back to back dyno runs with and without. It's definitely nothing to worry about though.

Fair call, wont do that again.

what he said, its just to cut down intake noise, throw it in the bin.
late model ZX6R's have theirs mounted on the bottom, so they can fill up with water :brick:

Thanks guys, I have removed the other one to "balance" things ;) and will add it to a growing pile of "if I ever sell it parts".

Make sure you plug the holes though otherwise it'll run like poo, you can see the bowl pressure tubes in front of the intake-noise-killing-satan-device and any leaks behind them make them run like dick.

I am pretty sure they are actually RAM air intake tubes and are plumbed completely seperately to the air going to the airbox/filter. I stand to be corrected but thats what the manual states. Cheers for the input, I will block them off anyways to help get a smoother airflow anyways so no harm done :-)

Pretty certain the smaller ones are there to pressurise the bowls :2thumbsup that's how the ZZR600s do it

OK, I think you must be right,

however, given that the smaller tubes take their air from in front of the main intake how does the holes further back have an influence? the bike has been missing a resonator for awhile now (apparently) and as far as I can surmise there might be a slight pressure loss from the open hole on one but that should be balanced back out by the airbox- the c models only had one intake in the nose so I wonder if that was a reason to change?
Thats my 1.5 cents
Thanks for taking the time to help a newbie- appreciate it.

Yeah I take your point those tanks appear to be totally isolated from the two smaller tubes (which actaully "y' into one and head down the right side of the bike to the rear of the carbs) so it still begs the question will the holes left behind by removing the resonator tanks actually do squat? If those two holes are critical then I probably had an issue that needed resolving either way.

Thanks for taking the time to help a newbie- appreciate it. I'm not completely sure if it'll effect it much, but I'd have those resonator holes blocked off as you will have a wee bit of pressure difference between the bowls and airbox, it may lose a wee bit of power. On the 600s it destroys any power above 4-5krpm when there's even a small leak on the ram tubes
ram air to where?
To the airbox of course.

The RAM air intakes are a completely separate system - two tubes that run straight into the back of the carbs to pressurise the carbs directly to provide more HP at high speed.
Hopefully these screen shots from the manual will assist you...

not 'of course' if you read the post I quoted (below) but yes seeing the pics agreed

i red repped you because it was a fucking daft thing to say. nothing cowardly about it.
yer not going to go into the VTNZ and hear them tell you that "your headlight is blown, the one on your left, if you're outside the car and facing it."
or tell the vet - "my horse's front foot has come up lame, it's the one on the left, if you're infront of the horse and facing it"
and it's unlikely you'll hear a pilot
*ding dong* "this is your captain speaking, it seems an engine has fallen off, it's the one that if you were outside the plane and looking at the pointy end, would be on your left, and now we're going to have to fly in circles, that would appear to be going from your right to your left, if you were still outside the plane and facing the pointy bit. that would appear to be clockwise, if you were standing in front of and facing the clock. or if you were standing behind the clock and facing away, but you had a mirror, and there was a mirror in front of the clock and you could see the clock in the mirror in the mirror, then it would also be clockwise."
...or would it...?
but you don't say shit like that, do ya?
no.
know why?
