Disc locks?

Looking for some security to fit under the seat cover. What are these fangled disc locks like and anyone recommend one if they're any good?

I use another brand,,their good for what they are but don't buy one sight unseen.
Go to a shop and make sure the one you want has a key hole that is either smaller or larger than a Bic pen barrel.

There's a few that can be opened by snapping a pic pen in half and then forcing the clear end of the pen into the lock as it's twisted which will then form to the indents in the lock and open it in seconds.

When you find one you like carry something to leave on your bike to remind you the lock is still in place.

I loop a short piece of twine over my throttle to remind me,,,I keep it looped around the lock when it's not in use.

I have a little Oxford disk lock, complete with neon reminder bungy cord. Have never had my Millie stolen, so assume it works. Anything is better than nothing.

Haha! I have had my bike sprayed with elephant repellant. Fuck, that stuff is the shit!

Back to the disc lock, yes get one, it will send a prospective on to the next bike most likely.

best to put them on the rear...apparently more difficult to remove, or get around. Apart from that you have a chance to stay upright when 20-30 of you all set off together and one person left their disc lock on. So funny to watch your mate dive over the bars in front of you, whilst you struggle to apply the brakes through the laughter.

Haha could easily imagine that. Another tip, if you put it on the front disc, put the lock behind the front forks with no room before the forks (so the bike could possibly roll back, but can't move forward at all). That way, if forgotten you can't get up any speed before realising and a disc lock doing a revolution before hitting the forks could do some damage.

Or calipers etc. What ever the disc lock would hit to stop on your bike.

Funny I was just thinking of getting one of these. I was looking at eBay as you can get ones with alarms in them (and no bic pen open-able barrels) for under $30nz shipped. There are cheaper ones for about $20nz shipped (same as the $60 ones on tardme) but I didin't like the look of them.

I thought the alarm would stop me riding off with it still attached....

I have the oxford one... $35 i think from cycletreads and another couple bux for the reminder cord. Seriously get the reminder cord, it has saved my ass already and ive only used it less than a month! Would be pretty embarrasing if you shot off infront of your workmates and hit the ground :killingme

I have no idea to be honest but it has a rectangular key hole that looks like it would fit a couple of Bic inner tubes.

If you're into taking advice from internet forums then this (http://forums.thedigitalfix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=396950) seems to suggest that any Oxford should be Bic proof these days.

Put it on the rear wheel... far harder to remove.

If you must put it on the front - good tip is to round off the bolts securing your brake rotor to the wheel... because if the scum can't just use a pen to open the lock they remove the rotor off the wheel, complete with your lock still attached. Also the cheap ones can be snapped off - usually cast alloys that are quite brittle.

And when you want to replace your rotor? seems like a case of stupidity to me, if someone has time to remove your rotor to steal your bike then there's really not much you can do.

Has anybody seen the grip locks, I bought one from motomail when I got my ninja, it holds the throttle still and holds the front brake on. The only problem is it seems to be made almost completely from plastic, but the company who makes it swears it is impossible to break and takes forever to cut through.

But the main reason I bought it was there's zero chance of attempting to ride off with it attached and I figure anyone trying to cut through it would be way too obvious in public.

If the steering lock is on .... and somebody wants your bike enough to steal it. A disc lock wont bother them. Or even slow them down.

But it can do nasty stuff to your rotor if you forget to remove it, :wacko: why I have never had one.
