View Full Version : A question about car racing

Yes, I know.
But, can someone explain (like I am five years old) what the difference between NZV8's and Supertourers is? It appears to be the same taxi racing in both, and while I acknowledge they are proper racing cars underneath, I could not be less interested in watching Commodores and Falcons going slowly. But it seems odd to me that 4 million people sitting on the edge of the world can have two seemingly identical race series competing head to head.
How did that happen?

It's complicated. Before we answer, first you have to wear the flannelette shirt and ugg boots.

I have my flannelette shirt undone and tied up under my moobs. Also Daisy Duke cutoffs and cowboy boots, will that do? I am not quite as attractive as Daisy Duke, but not far off it.

The thought of you in a pair of tight skimpy denim cutoffs is not good for health...

OK.
My understanding is that taxi racing is quite popular in Straya. But their form of taxi racing is not the same as ours? and now we have another competing kind of taxi racing?
and its all about money. Funny, who'd a thunk it. I couldnt tell you what flavour of taxi is underneath the paint, and I gather that the running gear is all the same no matter which flavour taxi you are nominally running, but I can tell you that awful Woodstock shit sponsor one, so do Jack Daniels (which, since I am partial to it occasionally, I would cheer for), and the hose coupling people and errrrr, other bogan-ish sponsors.
Where are the bodies buried?

Politics?
Internal politics. Which probably comes down to Dave's answer.

My last litte trans tasman jaunt cost $850 in air fares.
(Fortunately I didn't have to pay it.)
How many on a travelling race team - 4 to 6 bodies?
And then there's the cars and all the shizzle.
Expensive ditch for that game - so there's a domestic and a euro league.

They seemed to have convinced Auckland Council to spend OPM on a past its sell by date track. I'd rather watch paint dry than Falcador parading which is good as my wife wants the house painted

a quick guide,
the NZV8's were built from falcon and commie's but had controled engines and other parts to make them the similar pace,
the SUpertourer is bult from the ground up with either falcon or commie body work, all the cars run a 6 litre GM motor, and a spec chassis etc, they split from motorsport NZ to make this series, so the NZV8's have continued on,
the aussie V8 supercars just went a simialr way with a comman floor plan and alot of comman parts, they did not use a comman motor tho, each manufacture must use thier own motor, merc and nissan have joined the normal HOlden and Ford

Sure, and I agree, but my question is in the context of a story in the paper today about a clash this weekend between the Vegemite taxi racing league, and the Marmite taxi racing league this weekend.
Gotta love OPM.

so the Vegemite ones are NZV8's and they start as a body shell which is then turned into a racing car?
While the Marmite ones are "super"tourers and are like NASCARs: so a pukka racing spaceframe, then they just drape lookalike glass panels over them to make them look like whatever they are supposed to be i.e. a Coon or a Commode?

I get the feeling Big Dave is confusing the V8 Supercars with our own two V8 racing series.
NZ V8s were never really that interesting to watch.
The supertourers is a far better series and MNZ don't like it one bit.
I dont know the politics behind it all.

I like the fact that Big Dave's tribe have opened it up to other manufacturers. This year nissan and merc.Next audi, toyota, chrysler ???
Imagine a grid with makes and models from all over.Make for good racing imho.

If someone gives me the money, I'll race a 460 Hemi Chrysler 300C. Or a V10 one with a Viper drivetrain and 4WD.

As said NZV8s are based on Dunnyfalcodore things and the Ford runs the 302ci, Holden runs their 304ci motor and a 4spd Richmond box
Schupahtourerers are 427ci powered things that look like dunnyfalcofucktaxi things.
That's my basic understanding, I'd rather a proper full on production class where mad faggots can get the current 500kw offering from Walkinshaw, which is moar powah than both the ST/NZV8s. With lots less grip. Win.
Big budget racing in cars that aren't exactly that special is fucking ghey

Explain it like you're 5 years old? Ok: The NZV8s go Brum brum whoosh but the V8 SuperTourers go Brum brum brum whoosh whoosh.

Has to be a v8, remember what happened when they started letting anything other then 8's run?

IMHO it totally defeats the whole purpose to have only external shell differences. The cars are simply misrepresented as they are neither Ford's or Holden's.
The Aussie series is at least identifiable as different makes, and I was looking forward to this season. Now looking forward to watching the cars develop.
Racing is expensive no matter what you race and seeing manufacturers compete is a lot of fun. That's what is so good about bike racing!

I went to the Wellington Street race where an M3 BMW made them all look a bit silly. Those Skylines were pretty cool.

The E30 is technically the best car ever. ;)
Also, the ST started because some drivers and teams got sick of running Push-Rod, carbureted V8s with 4 speed boxes, so made their own better series. Then the NZV8s got better to try and compete. The ST are much, much better. There are more than 8 for a start.

Its a power struggle between Mark Petch and Colin Giltrap. I was asked to quote on building Ohlins shocks for the new series but they basically wanted me to give them away, so I walked away from it. The jokes on them, the lower cost German shocks they bought are not wonderful in terms of service life etc.
There are dodgy people in motorcycle racing and of course theres politics, but is got nothing on car racing.

And they dont wobble around the track anywhere near as bad as those Koni semi suspended pieces of junk. There were teams even refigerating spare sets of those Koni shocks and fitting as close as possible prior to race start so they could get a few more laps before they faded and turned them into a real wobbly jelly. Just another case of cavemen rulemakers making everything ''cheap and affordable'' when in fact it didnt

For 2013 they can run a 'catergory' engine or bring their own.

The chassis used in the V8 supercars are not true Ford/Holden items as such, and as of this year they've gone to a control chassis. And they don't have to use their own engines (although a lot will).
