This isn't the 1st tire that I've had that's developed a "cut"...
Is it a manufacturing defect or what...?

its one of these , tyre pressure/spring, damping prob

I think I might have seen the odd bit like that at times. I usually only worry when the steel belt shows through :whistle:

This is the point in the tyre where the two ends of the last rubber section are layed down, they are cut on a angle usally about 30" overlapping each other. Some times there are voids trapped in this overlap and as the tyre wears away these voids show up looking like cuts in the tyre. Not usally a problem as long as the tread surface dosen't start peeling away from this point. Hard use or high tyre tempture can make these look worse as they wear away the edges of the void making the gap in the tyre larger. So yes it's a issue in manufacturing.

Had that once on my GSXR thou. Never worried too much about it at the time and with my totally shit and limited riding skills, it obviously wasn't detrimental to performance...
