Hi
Have pretty much seen everything, but LOVE space-based sci-fi. If you think Dark Star's an obscure suggestion please don't post. "Cargo" would be appropriate. Sci-fi nuts will know what I mean.
Can anyone brain dump or recommend some space sci-fi I might not have seen? Bonus points for foreign.

Tarkovsky's SOLARIS?

DARK STAR is bloody over rated IMO. Sure, student project, but meh.

I'm interested in the suggestions also:

Oh yeah, how about OUTLAND or ZARDOZ (shirtless Sean Connery!)

But ENDER'S GAME comes out this year - looking forward to it more than anything else.

There’s some very interesting Sci-fi in development.

Chris Nolan – Interstellar
Ridley Scott – The Forever War
Neill Blomkamp - Elysium
Old Man’s War (maybe)
Wachowski’s - Jupiter Ascending

Coming soon – Oblivion, After Earth, Pacific Rim, Gravity, Man of Steel

Not excited about Disney’s new Star Wars films. (Sort of….)

I’m about to read Enders Game for the first time.

Dmaned right! Hope it's as good as the book and hope people get it (which is the trouble with some book-to-movie ventures)!

I thought the book ENDERS GAME was great. I hated all the soppy sequels.

the flim looks pretty worthwhile... there are stills floating round from on-set.

Dont forget the new JJA STAR TREK is released this year.

My personal view is that STAR WARS could and should have stopped after the first one that I queued to see in 1978. there is some argument for the sequels. some. But the prequels needed to be killed with fire.

I take it OP is familiar (since name checking DARK STAR) with the 1970's classics: my particular favourite is SILENT RUNNING. (NB bonus Bruce Dern cameo in DJANGO UNCHAINED)

I will be interested to see if they can translate THE FOREVER WAR to cinema.

By the way, Joseph Gordon Levitt is Henry Dorsett Case in NEUROMANCER. Hopefully he won't Keanu it like, say, I don't know, JOHNNY MNEMONIC. (Which I admit I have not seen, but I dont want to ruin one of my favourite short stories ever).

Dark Star is just too crap - even for the 70s.

Kind of like Metropolis - just give me the highlights. You have to have a lot of spare time to watch Metropolis in full.

I thought the following were interesting, some very dated, some not space related (sorry).

Logan's Run
Colossus: The Forbin Project
The Omega Man
The Black Hole
Westworld
THX 1138
Silent Running
Soylent Green
The Boys from Brazil
Capricorn One
Meteor
Altered States
Galaxy of Terror (better than it sounds)
Scanners
The Thing + remake
2010
Dune
The Last Starfighter
Nineteen Eighty-Four (absolutely loved this, RB is so good in it)
Runaway
Enemy Mine
Lifeforce
The Quiet Earth (amazing NZ film)
The Nightflyer
Barbarella
Moon 44
Naked Lunch – not what you’d expect, tough watch but leaves an impression
Screamers
Event Horizon (well, at least the first half)
Pi
Supernova
Titan AE
The Butterfly Effect
Primer
Serenity
Sunshine
The Man from Earth (cool idea)
Moon
Robot & Frank
Bicentennial Man

Also, anyone looking for solid sci-fi TV:

The Lost Room
Firelfy
Stargate Universe (very different from the regular SG)

Empire Strikes Back is one of the most amazing sci-fi films ever. Period. Jedi is semi-ok, the Ewoks just kill it. Loved it as a kid though. The prequels are rubbish - way to ruin Darth Vadar!

With you on Silent Running, re-watched it recently and it was still excellent. Shame about the TV screens - one of the few things that really dates older sci-fi. Maybe they'll go back to that?

Haha I didn't believe it until I saw it, but yeah, flash gordon's amazing. In a corny, funny sort of way.

Ender's Game is (allegedly) going to be done pretty well - it sounds like a lot of the cast + crew have read the book and were keen to do it right. The stills from the set look amazing.
[Sidenote - I love the original book, and Ender's Shadow was good too. The rest of the shadow novels shape up to be a little too mormon for my liking and lack the originality. However the Ender novels (Speaker for the Dead etc) seem good so far, although I'm not all the way through them yet.]

Some good lists for scifi movies in this thread - if you want more lists, io9 puts some together every year: http://io9.com/5972738/77-science-fiction-and-fantasy-movies-to-watch-out-for-in-2013 http://io9.com/5872776/70%252B-science-fictionfantasy-movies-to-watch-out-for-in-2012

Not so keen for pacific rim. But Elysium looks promising.

I love the star trek reboots. Old star trek movies were pretty good, new ones are fantastic. A bit of a different feel from the TV series but still pretty true to the story I felt. Can't wait for the next one this year.

The original three star wars movies averaged out to be very good. However everything since those.... has been appalling. Which is a shame, because there was enough back story there to make something very good.

The Black Hole
The Last Starfighter

Wow, somebody remembers these?

Black Hole was awesome back then (still is set design-wise), but slow moving by today's standards.

Stargate Universe (very different from the regular SG)

Yeah, as in excruciatingly slow at times...

Jedi is semi-ok, the Ewoks just kill it.

Not as bad as Jar Jar Binks though!

Krayy
11th March 2013, 10:52
Moon - bloody brilliant
Outland - exploding bodies in space!
Silent Running - robots playing poker.
The Black Hole - Disney's forgotten space adventure

And foreign entry:
Test pilota Pirxa - Stanslaw Lem's famous pilot on the silver screen (unless the Russkies didn't have silver then it was eggwash - who gets that reference?)

Yeah, I've read most of his and he's a great writer but some of his conclusions are almost too simple, almost as if he couldn't be bothered with it anymore and just decided to finish it off as quick as possible....Fallen Dragon might be a good place to start though?. The Greg Mandel books would do very well on film IMO. The others are just far to complex and epic for film.

Naked Lunch? A talking typewriter with lips that look just like a vagina? That is one weird weird movie.

Pandorum was great. I loved Cargo - has sent me on a search for other quality foreign Sci-Fi. (There's not a lot!).

Judge Dredd was good, but like The Dark Knight Returns, there wasn't enough Dredd doing what Dredd does best. Dredd felt like a bit of a side character at times. Also, the budget showed it's teeth when they decided to film in low tech in the mega-block. I'd love to see Mega-City One done properly as it's one of the richest sci-fi environments. Animated and not really space but Aeon Flux is good (not the movie - although when I finally watched it I didn't absolutely hate it, as long as you don't think it will be the same as the animated series).

Huh?? You mean Dredd don't you? I liked this film....much better than Judge Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone. I liked some of the touches like the "Chopper" graffitti...if you read 2000AD comics from the 70's onwards you'd have picked up a few nice geeky things in the background.

Would like to see Brian Aldiss Helliconia series brought to life on screen.....but seasons spanning generations won't hold audiences attention methinks.

Probably. I found them all very tedious. Seriously 2001: the first half with the monkeys is boring, the middle bit with the space station and the Discovery is cool, and the last little acid flashback stuff is just tedious. Talk about lay your message on with a trowel.

Theres a film called CONTACT starring Jodie Foster than no one has seen which deals with that whole "Its not only stranger than you imagine, its stranger than you can imagine" scenario. That is much better.

the problem with a lot of the suggestions for book to film that people are making is that they are pretty much un-filmable. Stories too big, universes that need too much explaining. Remember to get a film greenlit you need to convince a listed company to part with a big wad o'cash. Which is why we need to cherish something like DISTRICT 9, (and why I am looking forward to ELYSIUM so much).

Which is why something like Iain M Banks' Culture novels just wouldnt work. You would have to strip the stories down so much they would be nonsensical.

Every so often the wife and I pull out Babylon 5 and watch one a day for months
Lexx - Xenia Seeberg was a much better actor but when Eva Habermann left the series went downhill, after all, nobody watched it for the acting.

Sunshine - good movie, even had Cliff Curtis in it
Moon - loved it
Total Recall - the remake. Some of the ideas in this were brilliant and pretty much everything about it was spot on
Dredd - the Judge Dredd character is so well defined that there's no room to develop the character so it's the other characters that provide all of the drama, cos you know what Judge Dredd is gonna do. Brilliant and I can't wait for more of the same
Prometheus - loved it. Over the years I've fired the idea that the human race is a mistake at my wife repeatedly but she prefers the Big Book of Historic Fiction's ideas on things.
Iron Sky - kinda Steam Punk but in the 1940's with Nazi's. Loved it
Battlestar Galatica - Blood and Chrome - fairly decent prequel
Equilibrium - most people hated it but I thought it was a wonderful exploration of the ideas presented

I'll stop now. Starting to read like a pompous, full of it movie critic.

Just started reading some phillip k dick myself - Paycheck and associated short stories, he's an interesting and opinionated man.

'Possibilities diminished by man's inhumanity to man'. Gimme a break.

Even the effects were ordinary.

I know, that sort of shit just doesn't happen. And here was me thinking that the bit where she was "ok to go" was the fictional part

It did indeed... some nigger boobage too. Fucked if I know... it was a long time ago and screamed turned me off until I could take no more. I was just googlin to see if they made ST3 and it turns out they even made it to ST4. Wonder if anyone here ever made it past 2? Come on, there's gotta be at least one sad fuck out there.
Pick me!
Though I don't really remember 2, but i have watched it some time ago. I've watched 3 (marauders, i think) as well and that was pretty average. Pretty sure 4 isn't here yet, or not long out at least, haven't seen it.
Whens the forever war coming out? Loved that book, tho I think it'll be damn hard to make the movie as good.
Anyone remember The Ice Pirates?
I'm a sucker for most sci-fi....even the one's most don't seem to like. Love the new Star trek, the old original one's, star wars, Alien etc. etc.
Does Battle los angeles, war of the worlds (old and new), independance day and battleship count? Or both Hitchhikers guides? Ghosts of Mars? Red Planet?
I'd be here all night listing all the stuff I like....

I admit I also watched 3 :weep: but that was only because they bought back the original actor... whats his name? the B grade King! but alas it to was Shite.

Equilibrium - most people hated it but I thought it was a wonderful exploration of the ideas presented

This is true I loved Equilibrium, had some people in it that are actually good actors, (lady out of Red dragon) and even Bale before he became a prick!

I felt Chronicles of Riddick was the opposite, all the poor reviews but I thought it was a brilliant sci-fi action movie. Idiot critics...

I agree also, Aparently they are rebooting this franchise, am looking foward to it! although Vinny might need to loose a few to get back to Riddicks bod.

Watched it last week. Wasn't too bad. Felt like an 80s movie almost.... action film - not sci-fi.

Casper van Diem or something. Equilibrium was good but let doewn by budget. Reminds me of Gattaca, which is average but some people rave about.

I didn't like Pitch Black (budget), but Chronicles was a great popcorn movie.

Pitch Black is excellent - also enjoyed the Riddick sequal.

Not 'space' related but I own and enjoy the Hell Boy movies.

See if you can get hold of an early edition and read that as well. The original version is quite different to the later one. Originally OS Card wrote Enders Game to establish the character of Ender Wiggin for the book he actually wanted to write, Speaker for the Dead.

It makes Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles look primitive, but Roughnecks still is a good series with good characters and progression of the war.

Shocking though, they always seem to have better equipment except firearms - still takes half a magazine to kill one bug...

I was hot and cold on it too. Didn't really like the western elements but the Captain was great. There's an epsiode where he's threatened by a bad guy he's just beaten, thinks about it for a moment, and pushes him into a turbine. Not a typical goodie.

Empire Strikes Back is one of the most amazing sci-fi films ever. Period. Jedi is semi-ok, the Ewoks just kill it. Loved it as a kid though. The prequels are rubbish - way to ruin Darth Vadar!

The trouble for me now is, I want to introduce Star Wars to my kids. So do I show the movies in order from prequels to original trilogy, or original trilogy first and then prequels?

Since the prequels are more eye candy than substance, I'm worried that my kids will find the original trilogy boring compred to the prequels. I don't want to ruin the original trilogy for them, as I feel they're still the best.

Here is where you need to read the most nerdy thing I think I have EVER read on the internet (and I've spent a bit of time on Star Trek fansites.....):

Anyway, the TL;DR is show them in this order: IV, V, II, III, VI

omit I entirely. It adds nothing whatever to the story arc, and contains the suckiest suckfest in the history of suckdom, i.e. Haden Christensen.

I'd just stick with the original trilogy and let them find the prequels in their own time. When I re-watch Star Wars I find it very difficult to erase Hayden Christensen from Darth Vadar. Just... doesn't... compute. But hey, George Lucas came up with the whole thing - so I guess he's the last word unfortunately. He'd know better than anyone who DV is? A mate of mine portered for him (George Lucas, not Darth Vadar) at a hotel in Perugia and said he was quite rude. No tip either.

Grandkids are great - you just give them back when it gets ugly.

And in answer to the question - in the order they were released. If they aren't nerds they will be well done by 5 anyway.
If they are, then it's time to buy them horsepower instead.
