View Full Version : Don't ride with strangers

Mama always said don't talk to strangers. But she never said don't ride with them? Lesson learnt today I think. Arranged to go for a ride at 7.30pm and let the more experienced, stranger lead. Knew I was very new to riding and don't like to go fast... took me out to Muriwai when it started getting dark... uh oh warning bells :nono: I might as well have ridden by myself they were so far ahead of me for 90% of the time and didn't wait for me, well i think the speed at which they were going their definiton of waiting is different to that of mine... Got to some car park that looked over the water, stayed there for all of 5 minutes then when they took off I'm pretty sure they hit the concrete retaining wall? Anyway I ended up riding all the way home pretty much alone from Muriwai. Took the sign to Albany thinking there'd be street lights to aid my unexperienced self... um no... seemed like the roads were super twisty and never ended! Finally got to Albany... phew... I should have turned around when they started getting their knee down on corners and at least a couple of times crossed onto the opposite side of the road to take what I think was racing lines? (what do I know). But should have known when they didn't really wait for me... oh well a rides a ride eh but won't do that again.. Oh just to clarify I'm not being ungrateful, I'm just more like... wtf?

Just do like Monkfish and treat it as a sight-seeing experience, so go ride anytime, anywhere at your own pace and leisure... Like him, you'll end up with thousands of Ks on the clock in a short time, have loads more fun and are more relaxed.

And you need to come to SASS every Wednesday [safe skills development and learner-friendly rides]!

I have known some who have done the same. I often think to myself " wow, so you can ride a bike faster than me....a motorbike, not discover a wonder drug, not engage in major social reform....you can ride a motorbike faster than me".

How insecure do you have to be to find your self esteem in a motorbike?

Always choose to ride a route that you can complete on your own, preferably without getting lost around dark, that way when inconsiderate riding "companions" leave you behind you're happy to ride on your own. If the idea is to ride together, then it is courteous for riders to stick together as much as possible; some people though have different ideas of what makes a "group ride".

I don't know what was going through his head. He seemed friendly enough, as a person but they were the one keen to go for a ride and I don't see the point of going on a ride with someone else and leaving them for dust  I get that I'm nowhere near as fast or as good but I did warn them lol

Or he just enjoys riding at a fast pace.

I genuinely don't think he was trying to impress me at all, I think he is just used to going very fast, I later learnt that he used to do some racing. That said, I am naive sometimes but no, doubt he was trying to impress me.

Next time ask him if he can do decent stand-up wheelies.

Seriously though, that isn't really good riding etiquette. he may have just got carried away with his ride, but then if he isn't capable or remembering that he has an inexperienced rider with him, then he shouldn't be trying to lead one. I am (was...when I had a motorbike...currently bikeless:crybaby:) a relatively fast rider, but when I had new riders with me, I would adjust my pace AND tell them that if they lose me, not to worry, i would be waiting at the appropriate turnoff for them. Most guys I know did/do the same.

I can only presume that his friends must be better, faster riders than me. He probably WAS going his version of slow, but it's not the kind of... behavior I've encountered from all other times I've ridden with more experienced riders. Once he pulled over at the top of a road with some tight twisties after that I was on my own really.

It pisses me off when I see and hear about things like this happening because it doesn't help the whole newer rider experience one bit.

If people are going to go and take a learner on a ride then they should damn well be accommodating to that learners needs i.e. adjusting speed, looking out for them and what they are doing etc...

Anyhoo you both ended up "riding your own ride" I guess, good on you for looking after number one and making it home in one piece, hopefully he did the same. I guess we all start out as strangers though, now you know not to ride with him again unless he jolly-well behaves himself :spanking:.

I always make sure there is a confident rider at the back (usually me) when riding with less experienced riders, as I figure it saves them from worrying about getting left behind.

Good on you for continuing at your own pace, trying to keep up has ended badly on countless occasions, (I did go on a ride once where someone did that to me, I decided to go my own way without him rather than try figure out if he was gonna wait)

I don't understand why you started a thread because he left you behind and in an unfamiliar area, in the dark. And you seem to be defending him with each subsequent post?

Maybe he was trying to impress you, it kind of sounds like it worked.

I'd definitely have been impressed if he'd slowed down his pace so I could keep up and exhibited good road craft, lame, but not all of us are impressed by bad boys. I dont drive that much in the dark (or when I do, there are always street lights) so I found it a little intimidating especially when I have shit house lights on my bike  but... I am still alive (much to the dismay of some on here  ) Of course if it had been daytime it wouldn't be a big deal (it's not really anyway), but probably still a bit rude to be left behind :P

But seriously ... night time riding does open a whole new motorcycling can of worms. For a "still learning" rider ... it can be an unnerving experience. Being familiar with the road helps (and going down it a few times is not familiar) but many times, familiarity with the road is just not possible. But then you just do the best you can ... as safely as you can :blank:

Yeah I wouldnt have tried keeping up with him either tbh anyone that runs racing lines and knee down on the road is a twat, keep it to the track, also I don't push it when I dont know the other rider that well plus I would have put you in front of me or I would have stuck to the speed limit and made sure I could see you

I have only had to put my knee down once and that was because I had no other choice

Well done, that's very good. I don't ride my bike to or from work as I often need my car and to be honest don't want to ride home after some 12 hour days CBF! I only ride after work, if I am in the mood for it or every second weekend (otherwise I have my kids). My night issues, just a confidence/lack of experience thing. I haven't been driving for as long as my 26 years would normally dictate and have never had much course to go out at night, especially with no street lights. What can I say, I've grown up in Auckland!

I was about to go into a barrier at 140km if I hadnt leaned as far as I did then I would be dead right now

Yes I was being a bit of a dick at the time changing between lanes at 100-105km and got hit by wind and my throttle suck open :s my own fault for not realizing my cables would probably need lubing, also should have anticipated the wind however if the throttle hadnt stuck open then I wouldnt have had to lean quite so far

you know I fucked up everbody does at some stage but I used the skills I have to recover and Im still here right now plus I learnt from it and thats the main thing

Just do like Monkfish and treat it as a sight-seeing experience, so go ride anytime, anywhere at your own pace and leisure... Like him, you'll end up with thousands of Ks on the clock in a short time, have loads more fun and are more relaxed.

I only ride by my self coz,.... coz nobody lubs me.

Thousands of ks on the clock? 6k in 3 months, I am happy with that. Most of which done solo... will try super hard to get there this week B

Also the thing i first noticed about riding at night is you can actually see the bugs before they hit you.

Fair enough by the time I get home Im doing about 12hr days and its about a 45min ride home if I split 55km each way so 110km round trip a day plus im riding on the weekends

I lived in Auckland for 8 months I know how much the traffic is an issue however I did find the motorway out to whenuapai to be very quiet around 3am

That's a good effort. It's only about 40km or less round trip for me to get to and from work. Get on the motorway... get off... you're there, lol. I only ride for fun anyway, not to help with commuting or to save on fuel.

I went for a ride this morning with a whole bunch of strangers... Some of them left me behind too...

But to be fair they were in nice new cars and I was on a very old motorcycle... Still - I had fun and I didn't expect them to run at my speed just to oblige my eccentric taste in transport.....

You should've tried harder to keep up.

ON a GN ?? You got to be kidding .. even at full stretch it is not going to catch up ..

How insecure do you have to be to find your self esteem in a motorbike?

Fuck me ... that's a big leap ... just because he's a fast rider you get all Freudian . and probably wrong ...

I genuinely don't think he was trying to impress me at all, I think he is just used to going very fast, I later learnt that he used to do some racing. That said, I am naive sometimes but no, doubt he was trying to impress me.

Yeah ... if he was trying to impress you he wouldn't have buggered off at speed .. if he was trying to impres you then he's a dumb cunt - and probably needs ther speed to make up for the lack of a sex life ... did he really think a woman would drop her panties for someone who did that ???

Yeah I wouldnt have tried keeping up with him either tbh anyone that runs racing lines and knee down on the road is a twat, keep it to the track,

I remember a rider training day at Hampton Downs .. Some riders were trying to get their knewes down .. next thing, over the speaker system comes the message for them to stop that as they were holding up faster riders ... if a rider doesn't know what they are doing, getting the knee down can be the slower way to corner ... to me getting the knee down on the road can be as wanky as above-the-shoulder bars on Harley Didn'tson ..

I'm not defending him, as such, merely playing devils advocate, which I like to do. And there must be something wrong with your eyes, not impressed at all, I'm indifferent. I'm a bit of a tard but no-one in their right mind would be impressed by being left behind like that. Not to mention the lack of respect for road rules and roadcraft. I'd definitely have been impressed if he'd slowed down his pace so I could keep up and exhibited good road craft, lame, but not all of us are impressed by bad boys. I did like his bike though, very nice.

My 10 cents of ideas

1) Ride to a pace your comfortable with that way you're more likely to make it home.
2) Look for learner friendly rides don't just go out on any ride. - Generally if all of the group are on sports bikes you can expect a quicker ride.
3) Ask yourself what you want out of motorcycling? - Not what other people want.
4) Riding with strangers can be fun but not a great idea when you're only just starting. - I was lucky I already knew people that helped me along. So in return I'm now helping my friends when they are beginning.

Looks like you have a few people in Aucks that do learner friendly rides. I say get out on them as much as possible that way you'll hopefully find people at the same stage as you.

I can agree with someone in one thread and disagree with them in another, there's no point holding grudges, I don't have any, against anyone, wasted energy and also I just don't care enough. Knee down in the real world is monumentally stupid. Very very few road riders have the ability to control their destiny once they find themselves leaned way over with a knee on the deck, they usually find themselves stuck with lean angle and initial line untill they finally escape the corner or catch something nasty and crash.-the corner continues to corner and they cannot turn the bike, Unseen gravel, effluent dump from a stock truck, a sheep on the wrong side of the fence, oncoming car/truck ect ect.

Knee down, for the most part does not equal fast, it simply means you are carrying lean angle or have climbed off the bike in an attempt get it on the seal to "show" you are fast, time spent with knee down and or lean angle is time spent not going fast, when you have to buy the bloody things all the time, "getting your knee down" gets old! When you see a road rider in his bright and shiny power ranger suit, with scuffed knee sliders, think about being on the road with him coming around the corner at you.........

Most road riders would not know a race line if it bit them on the arse!, anyhow, proper race lines in the real world will get you killed if your luck runs out. Generally though, most road riders are not that stupid and save the extremes for the track days- except for a small number of sport bike riders and motardists.................

I used to hate campervans and harley boatanchours the most, for their inability to stay on their own side of the road- but these days, riding in the Akaroa GP, the SCARIEST thing on the road is now the sport bike rider coming the other way........ Called the Akaroa GP as the number of sportbike riders riding on the very edge of their ability has dramatically increased the last couple of years

When you are invited to ride with other people that exibit that type of riding, stay the fuck away from them, ride off in a different direction and enjoy your own stress free riding-if you are a beginner, only ride with those who will teach you how to think about your riding, how to assess your environment as you go, ride with those that understand the limitations of your bike, and of you, and are willing to be patient:scooter:

 but knee surfing on roundabouts and in car parks is so relaxing. It shows you've graduated from buying them from "proper" racers, or from getting the knee down in a kiddies playground on the roundabout :(

I had one new rider tell me he was taught the "racing line" as the best cornering method!!! To me the racing line is more than 1 ambulance heading to an RTA involving a motorcycle driven full speed whilst straight lining a bend.

I can only presume that his friends must be better, faster riders than me. He probably WAS going his version of slow, but it's not the kind of... behavior I've encountered from all other times I've ridden with more experienced riders. Once he pulled over at the top of a road with some tight twisties after that I was on my own really.

He was actually going his version of too fast.
The fact he couldn't stay on his own side of the fucking road is proof of that.
If it ever happens again as soon as you realise what's happening turn around an fuck off else where plus turn my phone off so when the prick finaly works out your not there anymore an tries to contact you he gets the "out of range" message.

With any luck it will fuck with his head an show him you can be an arsehole just like him.

I agree with this. And if there are no missed calls notices ... or messages left (don't turn it off, just don't answer it) he doesn't care if you are ok or not.

As others have said, just ride your ride; and remember that 50% of what you read on KB is bollocks...it's just hard working out what 50%.

Chalk it up to experience, it was night ride after all and riding in the dark on such a beautiful nights of late is no big thing, even if it is your first time.
I take it, had it been in daylight hours it wouldn't be such an issue?
Hope you had the visor thing sorted?

Hell yeah, I still remember the first twisty, country night ride that I did. Scared the shit out of me, never really got over the 100kph mark, and even then it was a decent straight. (And I'm not exactly risk averse.) headlight on a ZXR250 was shit, every on coming car around corners appeared to want to take me out...I felt out of my depth. But, things change, people develop skills and life goes on.

Night riding is pretty cool, I love it, and the weather is like this, can't beat it.
My first night ride experience was...
First time at night, first time at night in the rain, second or third time with a pillion and I had a tinted visor, we were an hour and ten minutes from home.
Lucky for for me I knew the road really well.

I love it NOW. A lot actually...but pretty intimidating that first time (third or fourth time ever riding a motorbike...before I even got my L plates). I don't enjoy wet night rides much, unless I have super effective wet weather gear. But that's just 'cause I hate getting wet

Rode from Greymouth going on dark in the pissing down rain with the wife on the back, had turned to sleet and freezing fog by Otira, had to stop at the backpacker/food place in Arthurs pass to try and thaw by the fire, no accomadation, so a bowl of hot soup and some toast and back on the road... Freezing fog with bursts of snow alternating with rain, visibility down to riding following the white lines in second gear when they could be found, trying not to get collected by morons in cars and road freighters going both ways, finally out onto the plains, totally wet and frozed to the point reaction ability was compromised cause the brain had become numb, only now the sky is clear and a solid frost was down. Spent the next hour mostly sideways.......

Got home around 0100, nearly fell off in the drive trying to stop and get off, legs didn't work real well :cold:

That was one tough night, made tougher than it needed to be by the day that preceeded it....... The wife was a legend, never complained once!

Left home early that morning for a day ride up to Picton to look at a bar we were considering buying, thought we would continue on to Nelson and stay the night there, then thought it would be a good idea to continue on to Westport instead to stay the night. No accommadation, and now it's raining ..... no worries, down the road to Greymouth, cause there is gonna be some where to stay, easy as..........

Toughest night ride ever, not in a hurry to repeat, those who know Arthurs pass would get that.

Lets hear a few night ride drama stories..... Have done the desert road on a freezing night too, that was fun on a 996 too, CHCH to AKL in one hit....

I have to disagree with the OP.

A blanket statement saying don't ride with strangers is a little bit of a knee-jerk reaction. Most of the people I ride with were strangers to me before I went on that first ride. L's Angels ride to the 'Naki? I basically knew no-one, and took a chance. I don't regret it. If I hadn't taken a chance on some of these crazy sounding people on this site I might have already given up on riding.

Most of the group rides I have been on with the LOR guys have been great. Yeah most zoom on ahead for a bit of fun, but there is no real pressure to keep up (for me at least) as there is usually a regroup at turns to make sure no-one gets lost. There is usually at least one person who is unfamiliar with the current route (and it's not always me!)

On the flip side of the coin I think the guy was a dick. If you ask a person with an L plate and a GN to go out on a ride you don't leave them in the dust in an unfamiliar part of town/countryside. On a motorbike you often end up going new ways/places. just because you have driven/lived in an area for ages does not mean you know the back roads riders prefer.

I have lived and driven in the Waikato for the last 14 years. I have been to all the main towns many times (Te Aroha, Tauranga, Te Kuiti, Te ... Raglan, etc), but I don't really know the back roads at all. French pass road? 8 mile junction? the forgotten highway? All new terms since I got on the bike. I am learning, but hey I get out the back roads behind Ngarauwahia and it's all hills and cows to me.

TL:DR - New people are(can be) fun, but don't be a dick(tm).

I'll agree that, yes this thread reads like a knee jerk reaction in part...the blanket part is not complete true to word. One bad apple don't spoil bla bla bla..
The week before going to the Naki, Bosslady and two others came for a ride with ''strangers'' and I don't think we were that bad..
Alot of people over the last 18 months or so have been first time riders on the L's Angels trips...first time in a group ride situation etc.
We're a group ride that rides as a group (albiet several groups) and therein lies the difference. I believe if you're riding with someone on a learners, be mindfull of that person, it's not difficult.

Dude. Thread title was a bit of a joke. However you're still welcome to disagree lol. Most people I've ridden with I've only corresponded with on here or seen them about or they've been on organised rides with people I DO know. Id hardly even said boo to this person when I should have at least exchanged a little conversation to get a gauge of what their riding style might be before I accepted to ride with them.

I started to read this.... but 10 pages is a but much to catch up on...

I am new to group rides as I have not long got back in to bikes....and forums etc weren't on the radar when I was last riding :P

Great to see you slowed up and rode at your pace, shame it meant dark strange roads to a inexperienced rider

But I am enjoying group rides and as most of my old riding mates don't have road bikes atm so most of the riders are all strangers...some are even strange :D

In off road 4x4 rallies (not comp events just off road runs) the rule is always keep the person behind in the mirror and that's how I ride on the road...

If you want easy going rides go out with cruisers.... most (not all of coarse) don't ride like its a race track ;)

some of those early posts saying go faster....get real never ride past your skill set.

hi,glad youve got the ridding bug,ive been thrashing em & crashing em for a while now,,ive been riding two decades on and off solo, why it suited me, i speed and take chances, wheelie ,wheelspin away from lights and tipical anti social behaviour, getting a bit more sensible now however and practicing riding skills from a kieth code book ''soft science'' heavens forbid i become faster.. but also smarter and more aware of my ability and limitations which is what matters when riding. as recent as last year i started ridding with ridders frm a local dealership which is cool and would suit you because it was well planed which is key, fast bikes were there fast bikes did what they do, gapped it ,i was like a race horse with the the riegns pulled up ,i didnt give chase but rode with the core group consisting of slower paced riders, beginners and sightseers, its a new experience and cool, i reflect back to 1986 when both my younger brothers and five boys from the hood got motorcycles, all beginners no experience between them resulting in two group crashes which could have been avoided had they have had a experience rider shared some basic group riding skills or they sourced help.it was because of there experience in part ive ridden solo,my bikes are both monoseats however enjoying comraderee of riding in group so could be looking for a bi posta seat unit soon enough ! the only sound advice i can offer you is find riders who plan rides like i found and youll only have good experiences,SAFE JOURNEY frm 1up5dwn

Oh just to clarify I'm not being ungrateful, I'm just more like... wtf?
