Just looking for a few who have ridden both and have chosen to stick with one or the other, and their personal reasons why.

having a tough time trying to figure it all out,

been riding road bikes for 4 years, 250, 600's an now currently riding a new 2011 speed triple.. done a few track days but mostly enjoy riding on the road.

I picked up a cr125 last year did about 35 hours, trails, motox practise at every chance i could.. really enjoyed the diversity of riding but was getting quite hurt, ended up at physio for a while with a decent knee injury an was off work for a week.

i enjoy riding at any chance i can in the weekends, but cant afford to do both nor have the time.

As i get older an committed to wife/house/kids etc i do not want to end up having a big serious road accident an put that burden on anyone, but i also dread the idea of dealing with plates, rods an serious broken bones from moto.
Fear doesnt stop me from riding but it does keep me in check & i do think about my future and want to live a good life.

Maybe time for a dual purpose like a KTM 530 then use it both off road and on road.

Yep, go adventure riding. Get to enjoy the road when you want, and also head off the beaten track. You choose how technical you want to make it, plus see some beautiful parts of the country you wouldn't normally head to on a road bike.

If you keep binning dirt bikes then don't ride in a manner which exceeds your skill level.

It's come down to money for me, now being on a single low income. I costs a shit load to register a road bike now, but to keep up with off road (trials for me these days) is expensive too - club membership, comp license, entry fees and transporting with 4 wheels. I was going to register the road bike for summer, and trials for winter, but have just settled for road riding it appears. My road bike is sort of adventure, just a gravel road blaster....that keeps me happy.

Injury, road or off road has never been a consideration for me, regardless of mortgage or kids - I ride, that's it.

Iv been very tempted to pick up a cheap dirt bike, but I think road riding will always be my favorite. You can actually go places, differnt places, for a real purpose. Makes it abit easier to justify, if you need justification to ride(which you should never need). But off roading can be fun. As mentioned, maybe a multi purpose/adventure style bike. Thats pretty much what I want to get, something road ride-able so I dont have to worry about transporting the bike to where I want to ride. But then I dont have kids or a mortgages, so I suppose things dont worry me as much.

I rode both for 30 years but had to stop riding off road because it was too hard on my back "two ruptured disks" so now it's road only and I don't miss the off road stuff.
Quitting riding because of the danger is not an issue and I actually made the decision not to kill myself on a bike a while ago an it seems to be working pretty good so far.:msn-wink:

I started riding dirt but after the other half had a bad crash we shelved the bikes and went skiing.
6 years later we went back to bikes and both got road bikes, we still rode our dirt bikes but we spent more time on the road and did every track day we could.
Now after 4 years of being on the road we have returned mainly to dirt.

My preference would be dirt, track, road.

On dirt and track i control how i ride, if i want to go flat out I move up a group, take it easy move down. most people around me ride with the same idea. on the road every fucker seems to be on my side of the road at some point the law of averages will catch up with me.
Yes I have had some serious crashes on the dirt and I have joined the cripple run but the dirt is just the tops. no matter what the weather it's the tops.

I like both....but I don't ride on tracks off road (MX), trail rides through farms, on mates places or organized rides, used to do tracks through bush etc but not for a long while, Not easy flat stuff but challenging rides that you set your own pace, you don't seem to get the injuries, I dropped road riding when I sold the registered XR600 but now I am back on the road with a cruiser and enjoying it and wondering why I stopped road riding :D

Still have an old XR250 and quad bike to hit the dirt when I feel the need... or just use them for hunting access.

You can't have to many bikes ;)

use to have straight road bikes, but then moved to a place up the end of a road 23k's & over 3 ranges 650m above sea level, so got a 650Gs, great bike for this & great on seal, but a bit small two up so now have the 1150Gs & it can go any where :msn-wink:

Done both over many years, currently making the transition to a single bike to do "adventure" style riding, seems to satisfy my craving for both, but you do make a few compromises.

I *think* I will be able to live with one bike with two sets of rims and a couple of extra front cogs.

.......But having said that, I am currently embarking on a campaign to convince the other half that a road bike would be a wonderful way for us to spend more quality time together once the kids leave home ;)
