View Full Version : Building a sidecar subframe appears difficult

Ive been to most of the engineers around town that I thought may have the knowledge/experience to build the subframe and attachment fittings needed to add a hack onto my W650 without much luck so far.

Just finished having a chat to Roger Stent, long time member of the racing fraternity, what an amazing and genuine enthusiastic Bike/sidecar man he is, Not often you get to meet such a helpful and knowledgeable guy.

He has got me started on collecting various bits and pieces that are required for this project, im hoping I have stirred an interest that will have him, (some how) finding some spare time in his already very busy schedule, fingers crossed.

ps, anyone got for sale a 16" laced wheel that can be braked for the sidecar wheel?

In this wonderful modern society, they don't want to stick their neck out on something that could remotely become a problem. ''It was nothing to do with me, it was him, that guy over there, he built it, so it's his fault.''

Does it have to have a side car?
It's a pretty sweet looking bike as is!

Oh and nice to see you here on KB :)

I will find out. I imagine it will need to be fitted with HD spokes? not sure about that either. Saying that my speedway sidewheel stood up to a fair bit of stress, and that from memory (1980) wasnt anything special.

Really not hard.. heres 2 I built.
XT660r one had to be alot more ridged as the
bike has no bottom cradle..
Both are for leaners...

wonderful job pete, I have just the sidecar fibreglass body and need the actual chair subframe built with swinging arm, suspension, wheel, brake etc, also 4 adjustable attachments (TOE-IN, LEAN ETC) from chair subframe onto the bike also need to work out wheel lead etc, I think the W650 bike frame is strong enough for the chair to be attached directly.

Its also a good idea to make the lead of the car wheel adjustable...
the lead should be no more than 15% of the bikes wheel base...
I found I need a lot less than 15% to get it to turn...
the more foward the car wheel is the wider the car wheel scrub
channel becomes... "scrub channel = How far the car wheel gets
pushed side ways when turning... zero scrub is when the bike & car wheel
is in line...but then its possable for a tip foward under hard brakeing..
So yer have to play one against the other come up with a happy medium..
for a ridged unit a leading link front end may be required to lighten the
steering...gives zero trail on the front end... When you turn a bike steering
the wheel travels foward in a arc.. but a leading link with zero trail the wheel
rotates on the spot... steering head line and wheel ground contact patch
are the same place...
Then a steering damper will be required as there is no self centering efect with
a leading link .. to stop head shake...

Roger Stent is my father in law. He is everything you say & he has an absolutely fantastic daughter. . . . . . .and wife.
Ask about the race boats & drag car & make time for a cup of tea & a look at some old photos.
