Hey,
I know my little S40 aint much of a cruiser but after a good ride yesterday through the Bombay hills (backroads not the motorway) I managed to scrape a peg in a right hander. It was a awesome feeling.
I was'nt going that fast I was only really doing about 75-80kph through a nice section of twisties, gently rolling on the right hand, with the turns and never touching the breaks. when on the last corner (I was giving it a wrist full coz it was the last one) my right peg scraped. It was a fecken surprise but man I had a grin from ear to ear. :wings:
Do you big cruiser riders do that?
Or is it just a light/mid weight cruiser thing?
P.S my pegs are not rigid, they fold, so said scraping never affected my line or grip. :msn-wink:

Going around a roundabout in Glen Innes about 50kph. Bit nerve wracking at first, as I'm not too sure if I have gone too far and the peg may dig in and lean me over a bit further leading to bit of a scrape.
For me it gets the blood pressure up for a minute or two.

did it all the time on the intruder. pegs are so close to the damn ground anyway.. most of the times its just damn inconvenient because you should be able to get around those corners without scraping.
Now, when I scrape on the zrx, that's a whole different story.

I scrape the pegs the odd time but mostly on slower intersections or if I hit a bump mid corner..... you will scrape the pegs more if you don't lean with the bike, the less you lean the more the bike needs to lean.
If you were inline with the bike..all good and enjoy

You're on a cruiser bro... it's gonn' be scrape heaven. The lean angle it takes for an S40 to scrape is bugger all, enjoy it where you can (yes, I condone this because I have nothing better to do than vacuum cluster flies up)

The issues arise when you cease scraping peg and start scraping frame. After that your steed turns into a unicycle mid corner

My footpegs are a great gauge of lean angle. I know that just when the pegs start touching, I've run out of tread. It's the transition point from good tire to side wall and I'm not so sure the sidewall offers too much grip :(

Yep - they do. In fact experienced riders on the big cruisers can scrape the pegs exiting their driveway.

youre only just starting to explore the limits. I consistently scrape pegs, they are all worn on a 45 degree angle on the end. The frame scrapes on every second ride( the part that touches is the old pipe support and not structural) and the short pipes I have drag their arse when I am really trying. You will find that being on the gas will make it harder to scrape than being off the gas too.

The wee feelers on sportsbike pegs are there for a reason. It's not a very good reason, :third: just the maker's lean angle limit, which means fuck all given the number of variables on any given day.
Li'l concerned that I've ground a few mm off both pegs on the new Buell, hardly ever even flicked them on the first XB12X I had.

Cruisers scrape pegs on straight roads if there is a bit of a side wind. Now try scaping pegs on an adventure bike. That is worth noting.

I know cruisers scrape during low speed manouvers, tis the nature of the beast. But I do think scraping at speed is a different animal, last night the mentor at SASS (sis) said when she scraped her Harley on the open road the pipes hit first and decided to unload the suspension mid corner, that would have been fun! :shit:

Well, I have no idea how you ride (I'm not a KB genius yet, sorry!) but I suggest working on your riding style and lines, body positioning etc and see (carefully) if you're able to stroll through a corner much faster without having the bike drag on the ground. One common thing is to be off the gas in the corner, just keeping the gas cracked open can help a lot.
Now I've said that, if you go lowside your shiny beast, I claim no responsibility

XB12X needed a 'gravity well' corner to scrape the pegs. There's one just north of Whitianga. :devil2:
Most Adventure bikes are pretty easy to scrape pegs on. Last V-Strom I tested was dead easy. Statement about the handling competency of the bike/s rather than any clearance shortcoming. BMW R1200GS no so easy from memory good clearance and handling. Stelvio do-able with effort. Varadero same as a Strom. That Moto Morini didn't touch down with mild flogging. KLR at the roundabout exiting the estate.
The secret to motoring quicker on a Cruiser is not getting a knee down - but getting a cheek off.
Slide the buttocks off the saddle and hook the seat with the high-side knee. The near side knee tends to go outwards not down. Basically get as much mass working as far away from the bike and as low as possible - outrigger style.
But if that is what you bought it for you have the wrong bike anyway.

Dammit Dave, I was hoping to chime in first
My current ride has clearance of just over 4 inches - which is not very much at all. The hero knobs disappeared off the pegs in the first week.
Lately however I have been having a lot more fun, and moving along quite...swiftly, by playing with 2 concepts.
Firstly, as BD just said, getting my arse off the seat. Improves the lean angle immensely. You really cant believe it until you do it
Secondly, I like to see how far I can go without using my brakes.
Combine that with my own preference for the "slow in - fast out" corner approach and I am having a great deal of fun, at speeds on or under the limit (mostly) and still getting plenty of time to stop for a smoke while waiting for the peg scrapers to catch up

Followed a guy on a VTX and there were sparks flying on every corner. Looked cool but we were doing well below the speed limit and well below the limits of most normal bikes and riders.

Yep, scraping is slow
Not to say it can't be fun. My previous ride had footboards and on some corners I used to be able to scrape them allllll the way round, yeehaw

You seem to indicate that this is a problem?
These are machines that are enjoyable without pushing limits. That's their point.
If you are riding them so they are 'unloading the suspension' regularly (I like that term thanks) it will cost heaps in replacement parts.

Agree with this - I have lately developed a technique of just shifting weight onto the inside cheek and pushing down into the bike through the corner seems a lot smoother and less energy intensive than hanging off.
The weight transfer into the rear wheel seems to almost pivot it through the turn off the rear wheel, also means you maintain posture through the turn and can keep eyes looking further ahead without disruption, the front just seems to come around in perfect line - might be unique to my style of bike.

Cranked my shocks up one more click and rode up to Big Bay Maukau heads with a pillion last night... and with a slow in power out approach and plenty of counter steer the cruiser didn't touch once.... and left no chicken strip on the front tyre and a little strip on the rear, must have been very close many times but no scrapes :)
Was a nice ride...bit nervous looking at the black clouds but it stayed dry :D

I can scape almost at will (in dry conditions)
almost always on small roundabouts
impossible to hang off due to shape of seat
definitely find that corner speed is limited by available lean angle especially 2 up
footplates have grind knobs underneath and fold up so no dramas
have never gone past the footplates so dont know what hits next

It will be interesting to see if mine still scrape with a 1/2" longer progressive shock, Handles so much nicer and corners better, I guess it will still scrape low speed but not so sure at the higher speeds, Not much of a chicken strip on the front before so I may be able to get rid on the last 2mm as it should get more of a lean on now :)

hang off more.
be a bit careful about riding it too hard. pegs on the road is fine, but if you get a bit more aggressive, you might end up dragging hard parts on the ground. (pipes, frame rails engine cases). Lean it further than that and you might lever a wheel off the ground. Thats always hilarious.
also, buy a better bike for spirited riding. SV650, Hornet 900, would all be way better options if you want to ride even more quickly. Or a Triumph bonneville. Or a Speedmaster if you must have your feet out in front of you.
