View Full Version : AMPS and Triumphs?

Hey all,
I was in AMPS yesterday drooling, when I noticed they had removed all of the Triumphs from the shop floor.
(I wanted to compare a speedmaster to a 883 superlow)
I found a peon running around with a couple of bits of paper in his hands, and asked him what the deal was.
Apparently Harley has had the pressure on them to become a Harley only dealer for quite some time now, I guess the HOG rally (and important Harley people) last month had something to do with the decision, but no more Triumph for AMPS in auckland :shit: :bye:
The only place to look for a new Triumph in all of Dorkland would now be Holeshot on the shore. is that correct? or is their any other dealers that I havent found? :brick:

According to my father in law (harley rider currently visiting us from the USA :weep: ) Its happening in the USA too.. several dealerships in Denver where he lives, have had to move out any other brands from their harley showroom. Some have just given up and only sell harley, and others have a second showroom, in which they are allowed to sell "others". Quite strict rules about it, from what he was saying. He also suggested its been a sort of new thing over the last year, one at a time, they are all changing.

I understand that by bullying other brands out of "their" dealerships, they get to remain exclusive and it works for their Image. But it really sucks for the potential buyer now. no way to see the bike you want side by side.

Holeshot are friendlier anyway. You haven't lost anything there. Go buy the Triumph and give the finger to HD ;)
And yes, there is a significant thread on this already.

Was in Welly a couple of weeks ago and Wellington Motorcycles have had to drop Triumph too. I think you'll find also that Cyclespot have two showrooms because Honda and BMW won't share floor space. I'd like to see a big shop that did them all, but I guess we'll never see that.

WM never had Triumph as far as I am aware. They do have Suzuki. Triumph in Wellyville is the crowd on the one way system: Motorad?

WMC did have triumph since inception of the new company, right up till, hmm, think I looked at a 2006 so a little after that for sure. But they also had Guzzi for a while.
Apparently Suzuki don't make dirtbikes for wgtn market.
For years Honda in NZ did the same. Was shocked in UK dealers had several brands on same floor.

Correct F5 Dave. We had Triumph from the rebirth right up until we'd had enough of Triumph NZ's shit service and dropped the francise. That was when the Street Triple was about to arrive. Can't quite remember when that was.
We've been selling a few dirtbikes of late too just for fun.

Honda like their dealers to be one brand only, the local parts guy was explaining this to me one day. I was wondering what he'd make of Peter Stevens in Melbourne when we called in on the way to PI. That must've been an eye opener for him.

Meh, Elizabeth st used to be a real bike Mecca. Yes Peter Stevens was pretty much the biggest & the cleanest run (well since I first went), but the others had a diversity that was a valuable addition to the scene in general. One domination is never the best. The rest are gone or a former shadow.

FWIW The Team Moto group in NSW Qld are now the big retail player.
They have an outlet for most popular brands.
I think they own Morgan & Wacker Harley and BMW now too, but don't quote me. Pub talk.

The first time I went they were a few crappy little dives with some well dodgy bikes for sale and no accessories.
they have gone yes but it couldn't see it was a bad thing as I couldn't see anyone buying from them.
There was still the HD/Triumph/Can-am shop just off Elizabeth and the Victory shop up the top next do to the Ducati shop.
Still way better then here.

OK - first I have no 'vested' interest (Geddit) other than all I see is customers - and I do get invited to lots of events.
Some of the squillion and one badged chain smokers are some of the most solid bikers I have ever interviewed. Harder cases than I'll ever be.
If you are going to bag lifestylers, make sure you do it for all of the dealerships cause there are dufus' (what do you say there hitcher) and good cahunts at all of them. S'all I'm sayin'.

Or will they be the next shop to close?
When I win the powerball, I'm going to set up a moytorcycle "Warehouse" I will parrallel import every brand of bike and sell them all on one floor. One shop for the country. Test rides will be available around the country via a truck or two visiting all the main centres. Service and maintainance will be contracted out to all the motorcycle mechanics who will find themselves unemployed when all the pissy one brand dealers fold from trying to compete with me.
Problem solved.

Surely appointing a second dealer is creating a more competitive market & giving the purchaser more choice. Just playing devils advocate here. Perhaps the villain is Amps, they are taking anti competitive measures to protect their market by making sure there is no other HD dealer in AK.

I used to own a new Triumph and have had first hand experience just how fucking terrible Triumph service is. I have little intention of owning another while Triumph NZ has any involvement in the process. My experience with Harley has been completely different, as in night and day.
If I was Harley and I had invested getting the dealerships up to my corporate standards I would not want the dealer selling other manuifacturers products. Took a mate to the local BMW dealer to order a few parts then went to the local Harley dealer for a coffee (yep free), my mate said after we walked in the door and was greated by the sales staff that going to the BMW agent was like being a lepper. He brought a set of riding clothes that day from the Harley agent just because the service surpassed his expectations.
The whole high quality dealer experience is one reason why Harley Davidson is the market leader.
Now if Triumph would like to cough up with the parts............... no I didn't think so.

They will have signed something in the past with a hole for something like this to get pushed through no doubt.
You think this is bad, look at Pandora (the American company that stole a design from an Italian one and made a fortune)
They had a min stock buy in of around 25-30k to get setup (bear in mind you're selling things that retail for $40-$400, so that is a big investment), had min stock orders (someone wanted an oddball product, you had to order 3 and eat the two you would never sell), and then after they had given it to every man and his dog they set up their own branded stores and told all their customers to get f'ed, they wouldn't supply any of them anymore, worldwide.
That really opened my eyes to how the business world works these days.

Yeah, Bayride in Tauranga is my kind of bike shop. Triumph, Yamaha, Ducati. Good stock of bikes, anything parked outside on the footpath is there for a trial ride. From my occaisional exerience, there's a good team downstairs in the workshop too. I reckon it'd well be worth a ride down from Auckland to look at bikes there, even if you didn't close a deal you'd have had a great 400 km ride through the Karangahake Gorge or down Hwy 27 and over the Kaimais.
A couple of years ago the agency that is now Red Baron Mt Maunganui let Honda go as Honda demanded they be exclusive dealers. Then the Kawasaki/Moto Guzzi/Hyosung dealership was bought out and changed to Polaris ATVs (wonder if they will introduce Victory and Indian?)
I've thought that it'd be a good mixed brand bike shop with everything that's missing in Tauranga/Mt M, Honda, Kawasaki, Moto Guzzi, Victory and Indian.
The Honda agent here in Mackay, Tropical Queensland, has Honda, Triumph and Victory. I wonder if Honda ever has the balls to put the hard word on them to be an exclusive dealership? I think Triumph, Victory and Indian would make a nice dealership - everything from the Street Triple, Speed Triple, Bonnevilles, to the new Indians and the Victorys (or is that Victories?). A little weighted towards heavy cruisers, but every miner buys a Harley or a clone when he gets his job so it'd be the perfect dealership for the area.

I understand that by bullying other brands out of "their" dealerships, they get to remain exclusive and it works for their Image. But it really sucks for the potential buyer now. no way to see the bike you want side by side.
yeah when i tried to buy a burger king meal at mcdonalds they simply wouldn
t sell me one, pissed me right off I tell ya!

Whether we like it or not, Corporatisation is going to become more and more evident...
Market leader or not, HD are based in an economy that is failing at a National level, even the Japanese 'big 4' have felt the squeeze.. ( Dont forget Yamaha have recently put forward some similar expectations of their dealerships.)
For any large business, whether we, as the end product consumer like it or not; to make those selling your product a one company outlet makes good financial and business sense.
It may be considered 'unfair', all those top corporate officials are interested in is MONEY, everyone thinks that HD are doing what they do for the 'love of those who buy the product'.... Reality is, if they could dispense with HOG, and the so called amazing dealership's and still make the same profits?
It's an outstanding marketing/profit making tool.. and for that, good on HD. They have in effect 'branded' the outlaw biker image to their bikes, just like HD owners say HD 'invented' the cruiser look.... no they didn't, HD simply have continued for around 60 yrs to produce bikes with the same basic styling.
Sadly maybe due to distance, low sales, (other factors) Some manufacturers products seem to not get the service/support that they do in the Northern Hemisphere.. I know from being a BMW owner in England, the dealership support/services and quality in the 80/90's was outstanding.
Maybe it's down more to the importers, those who hold the purse strings, as to what seems to be 'shoddy service/back up' mentioned by some here, rather than actual lack of support, from the manufacturer?
The demise of the English Car/Motorcycle manufacturing industry is an 'historical' warning, it now has no 'home brand' major producer.. The US car industry (GM specifically) has just recently lurched from major crisis to major crisis, had the Govt not stepped in? GM would likely be gone in it's entirety. Remember GM disposed of SAAB, HD 'disposed' of Buell. No GM? No Holden, Vauxhall, Opel, and all the US brands owned by that corporate.
The likelyhood is, China WILL be the major player within a couple of decades,,,,,,

Pre EQ CHCH was good on a Sat morn down Manchester St (the other end of the street was a different matter later in the evening....)
There was Honda, BMW, Triumph, Harley, Moto Guzzi and Suzuki all within a stones throw of each other. Oh and Pit Lane for tyres!
Farking Earthquakes :-(
WTF are you complaining about
it just means the cheap rides are up one end of the street and the expensive rides are gone elsewhere

Still waiting for Triumph to cough up with the parts I paid for............................
Since AMPS have done with Triumph i have now started buying gear form Holeshot. Have to say, there is a vast difference in service levels compared to AMPS. I get everything i need either same day or the day after and pricing does seem better also.
Yeah, Bayride in Tauranga is my kind of bike shop. Triumph, Yamaha, Ducati. Good stock of bikes, anything parked outside on the footpath is there for a trial ride. From my occaisional exerience, there's a good team downstairs in the workshop too. Have to say, Bayride is pretty cool too. Good assortment of bikes to perve at and try out. Nice bunch of guys too.

Yup this makes a lot of sense. Why would you try promote another brand over your own.:headbang:

Problem is most of the 'tits' on the street are carrying spare tyres around their guts ...... I could be wrong - maybe they have 4 - 6 tits like dogs.
Mind you if they looked like this ......

AMPS doesn't have its own brand as such and hasn't gone the same way with the Harley-Davidson brand unlike Colemans Suzuki for example. If it was "Ray Pratt Harley-Davidson" it would be a different matter.

Last bit's I bought for my bike I ordered over the phone from Holeshot and they turned up in the post two days later.
Don't know who you deal with but I'd find another supplier if I was you.

Last bits I brought for my (Hinkley) Triumph I ordered in person and paid for them in advance:baby:. After numerous attempts to get them I did take your advice and find a new supplier. The new supplier is Harley Davidson:rolleyes:. To this day I have never recieved any parts.
Based on my experience, I have one thing to say to any new Triumph owner, that is be very very carefull when attempting to order parts through Triumph NZ. They provided me with the worst service I have ever had from any vehicle or parts agent and all their terrible service has resulted in me changing MC brands.

In my experience, any dealings i have had with AMPS over parts for my Triumph, they have never been helpful. Almost felt like they didn't really want my kind in there.
Dealing with Holeshot has been awesome, they can never do enough to help. They communicate well and keep me updated to when parts will be arriving and due to be posted out etc.
I get looked after really well.
Perhaps you should take Road Kills advice and change dealers.

The very same guy rebuilt my gearbox on my racebike and he is friggin awesome.
He can get anything you want, has some great sources i believe.
I take both my bikes there for top tunes etc and haven't had an issue.
Very trustworthy, he thought he may have left a flange out of my gearbox (only cause he found a spare one on floor somewhere) but he rang me and came out to inspect it again to make sure he had things sorted. Cost bugger all too.
Recommend him to anyone and he has all the computer tech gear for tuning etc also.
