Seriously wtf is up with my piss poor posture? I really need a sports bike, then maybe I won't look like such a TARD.

Paul's right - your hands are too close to your shoulders ... that's why you're sitting on the bike in such an odd way ..

Those crappy bars are one reason I think Ginnies are shit to ride ... (sorry, I know you love yours ..when you get a real bike you're realise ...)

I have a very odd habit of leaning forward for some reason, I don't sit upright. Hence me looking like some form of neanderthal or monkey or something. Unfortunately I still look like one even when I'm not on the bike and especially with my helmet off!

Look at most pics of riders, though and many appear more hunched than you do here.

From memory Jazz who used to be a regular here before departing back to Scotland had real issues with her Ginny as she used to get the handlebars stuck when on full lock. She was petite and the sill bars would end up with one tucked into her armpit and the other out of reach and it just looked ungainly beyond reason.

I fitted some old BSA A10 pattern handlebars I had laying about. Took 20 mins or so - maybe a little longer and the bike and her comfort were transformed. The std GN handlebars are shocking things.....

An old gf had the lower bars fitted & it helped immensely. Think I had actually mentioned that to Jazz at some stage. Mind you my ex gf hopped my 4cyl CBX550 & was immediately more comfortable, at least putting around some obstacles in a carpark (I was helping out on riding courses back in the day).

Those std bars are pants.

But what about those square section tyres??? Are they standard on a Ginnie ?? They would make it handle like a loaded concrete mixer ..

20th March 2013, 11:04
But until you get new handle bars, try lowering the ones you have. You just need to loosen those three screws in the center of the handlebar and then it move down. You can put them even lower than mine. Try different settings and then stick with what you feel most comfortable with.

Not original I'm pretty sure no. The Chinaman I bought the bike from in November told me the owner previous to him changed the tyres at the end of 2008 or something. BUT the front and rear tyres are different, not even from the same manufacturer?! So yea they're at least 5-6 years old.

About the price of a couple of tanks of gas in the Ginnie. As long as you have someone help select & fit them some lower rise bars will be cheap & easy. rotating the std bars are just going to put you in an even odder position.

Yeah . it looks exactly like a car tyre .. get a decent bike one .. it will make the bike handle better.

Bars are not that expensive ... but fitting them might be ... if it's a bolt-off/bolt-on job then it's only time and a half-way decent amateur can help you ... if the cables need to be shorter then it will start to cost you ... because you will need new cables etc ..

After having a go on bosslady's GN the other day I want a screen, too. Makes sitting on highway speed so much easier. I have to pretty much lie on my tank at anything over 80kph on my bike.

Any requirement to lean forward is dependent on the bike. I wouldn't suggest moving your body mass backwards on a gn as it would put you out of wack with the footpeg position, decreasing control and the ability to lock onto the bike. Keeping your arse above the footpegs tends to put you in the right position automatically.
Cruisers with forward controls are obviously an exception.

Does nothing but ease the numb arse and give the legs a bit of stretch...its a GN, the often used term ''getting under the paint'' wont make any difference where this bike is concerned, it is not a track/race bike is it?
I am more impressed with her head position whilst cornering, shows why she is out there in the first place.

With reference to being on the track again; take a look at where her knees are in the picture. They are almost touching the forks. If she moves all the way back on the seat she will be in a better position with the foot pegs. She should also consider lifting her weight off the bike on approach to and around corners by standing on the pegs more.

She is currently riding the bike like she is a passenger on it, and just sitting there, as opposed to riding and controlling it. :)

I know this is KB and there will be a great divergence of opinions. Until Bosslady aspires to ride on the track seriously, sitting there like a sack of spuds with instep on the pegs is just fine.

A more suitable set of bars might help but a new set of tyres sounds more urgent...

Spot on. I've tried moving my fat arse backwards on the seat. Result is less control of my bike. She ain't no sports bike, am a bit too far away from the tank don't have as much for my knees to grip on to and the handlebars are so high they might as well be mid air. First, let me just say you don't buy tyres on price, unless you are an idiot. You don't sound like one. Get the best one's you can afford, nothing less.
You should be able to get some bars for less than $50, maybe even try the wreckers. There will be lots here that will help you fit them for nothing, myself included if you come to south auckland.

As a side note, just bought a car that had "4 new tyres" on it. Oh yeah, they're new alright, but they're so cheap that they're actually dangerous in the wet. It's ridiculous. I cant even tell which is the brand and which is the model "Mystique", "Blue Streak".

Why....
1. Money, it's a cheap bike sports or otherwise were more expensive and older
2. Cheap to maintain, apparently, it's a simple bike - not too much to it
3. No fairings, which is good cause I've dropped my bike multiple times
4. Every man and his dog seemed to reccommend it as a good learner bike
5. I bought it myself without the aid of a MAN

And no, I never had the opportunity to try any other bikes, I didn't have anyone to help me with my purchase.

Pirelli City Demon's. Quoted $350 incl. fitting but am able to get them somewhere else for more than $100 cheaper, fitted. See... shopping around! Pretty sure he's not making any money off that though so a sweet deal.

SHIT !!!! I'd pay that much for a rear alone on my bikes ... (and then kill it in a month !!!)

Whats that got to do with it? It's the only connection between your bike and tarmac.
Don't confuse "best" tyres with "sportiest".

I am sure that Pirrelli makes more than "sports" tyres ... (Like they make the City Demon) ... and I'm pretty sure I would not count PR2s as sports tyres ... so no, I don't confuse "best tyres" with "sportiest" ...

Tyres are rated for the type of work they are intended to do. It's in code on the tyre.

Michelin's for example:

'The code comprises three characters: two numbers and a letter, for example, 67H.The two-digit number is a code for the maximum load carrying capacity of the tire. The letter is a maximum speed rating indicating the maximum speed at which the tire may be used with maximum load when the maximum listed inflation pressure is used.'

You don't need tyres rated for 300kph and 300kg on a GN.

'Cheaper' tyres will do that job. Choose a reputable brand and get the correct rating for the application. Personally I'd be expecting to pay around $200 for the set - but that's a guess.

So at nearly 6 ft tall, why did you buy a GN?
This is NOT a piss take, I'm genuinely curious. I can understand the vertically challenged buying one, but even as a learner there must be better options out there.
Have you had the opportunity to ride any other bikes? What were they and were they more comfy?

I am 5' 10'' and bought one for my first bike...why? because I like brand new things and it was affordable at $2995.
At the time, I had no idea what sort of bike I would eventually end up owning/liking. The GN is a good bike to learn on, and you can easily sort out in your head what style of bike you may prefer, whilst riding one.

:innocent:

Never ...never .....use a knife on a tyre you could go all the way through...use a heated spoon instead. Much safer

"Air grooves", they sound a bit like "speed holes".
