View Full Version : Zip won't zip, options?

So as the title says my zip won't zip, spent over 5mins after work yesterday trying to get the bloody thing to connect & zip up before giving up & riding home unzipped.
No better luck this morn, so currently I'm back to my old un-armored leather jacket which has definitely seen better days.

I'd like to get back into my armored jacket, so when it comes to faulty zips what are my options? are they worth looking at repairing?

I spray my zips with a silcon spray which tends to help on most cases otherwise its a replacement, saying that it would depend on how big a job it is to do a replacement on your jacket Is it worth while ??

A new zip is like $20, you probably wont get a new jacket for that price.

yea it's the cost of fitting that changes things

We used to rub candle wax on stubborn zips that didn't want to zip up.

But check maybe something is broken or bend in the zip.

I tried the other day to zip my 'new' leather gear together just to notice that the zips on the jacket and the pants (of the same brand) are exactly the other way around :brick:

That includes fitting around these parts.

Take it to modern bag and shoe repair in Majoribanks St. The lil Indian fellow there will replace your zip for fuck all. We take him a lot of work.

Superglue. Why would you want to take the bike jacket off again? :innocent:

If the teeth on the zip are still good, then a little vaseline on your fingers and run it up the zip. Check the zip slider isn't corroded.

old fashioned fix is pencil lead (actually charcoal) rubbed on the teeth of the zip, works best on metal zips.

One of the Wellytown girls (Ratti I think) does repairs ... she has it in her Sig.

Nah, just use a stapler. If you have one at home and one at work then you won't even need to carry one with you most days.

Well unfortunately the lube job hasn't worked, so I guess the next step is the pro's, so this guy work with thick leather? (the zip look pretty well embedded in the leather to my amateur eye)

how is the suggested solution holding out? WOn't last forever, but can make a difference to wear time if you are on a tight budget.

it's working for now, but I'm pretty positive that the zips misaligned by the slightest & this is/was the cause of the prob but at-least I've got a fix till such time as I get you to replace it with a more substantial zip; one a bit more glove friendly maybee

maybe i missed it, but is it a metal teeth or plastic zip? If its plastic and looks like the zip on the right in the link above, just twist the zip to the side slightly while pulling up. This works for me on a jacket wih this problem (and this zipper type)
