Email on Windows 8 phone

Anyone here using a Windows 8 phone, and IMAP to access their account(s)?

I'm curious to know - from someone actually doing it - how well it all works.

On my Windows desktop I have Office Home and Business 2010, and plan to keep using Outlook 2010 on that desktop as my main email software for now.

My email is hosted by an NZ company (I have my own domain but not my own Exchange server!) and I'm happy to stick with that.

My Outlook gets to it through normal POP/SMTP.

My current Android phone uses IMAP to access my email host, and works well enough in seeing emails that have not yet been downloaded and deleted by my Outlook, and enabling me to send email while out. It does not all sync nicely, but that's no biggie for me.

I'm considering (if I can get over the stupid limitations on sideloading) a Windows 8 phone and in summary ... just want to know if it's generally easy and successful to set up IMAP mail links in its in-built email software; will it work "as well" as my current Android phone?

imap> pop. change all your shit to imap. then it should all sync nicely.

winblows phone should do it.

POP and IMAP are definitely poor cousins to proper syncing, depending on your host, can you have hosted exchange? It will give you the best performance.

Otherwise, I assume you're aware that you're not getting full syncing (depending on the configuration of Outlook), as Outlook will not get emails you send from the phone, unless you cc them to yourself?

It gets a bit muddy, but essentially, Outlook doesn't play with IMAP nicely, in terms of updating in real time, without extra steps to force the sync (ie, it strikes out emails, but won't remove until another command is run)...

rugh, all goes back to my first line regardless.

No comment on W8, haven't used it at all, but being MS, I'd expect again, proper exchange sync, to work nicely.

Yep, I mentioned sync issues in the OP. But the way it works now with my Android phone is good enough for me, so just want to know if it'll be at least as "good" with a Win 8 phone. (I'd assume it would be, but you never know.)

I've checked, and in the basic hosting package I don't think I get Exchange Sync. (e.g. https://support.webhost.co.nz/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&group=webdrive&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=565&nav=0,83,108 )

The one thing i've found with it (after one of our users bought one) is that it doesn't like playing .wav files in emails. Who still uses .wav files these days you ask, well our voicemail to email system does (as well as a fair number of PABX systems out there..) Plays fine on Android and Apple phones. Its a known issue thats well documented on the net but microsoft aren't saying anything about it. Other than that it seems to sync up to our exchange server and do calender and contacts fine. Just a heads up for any other companies out there thinking of switching over though.

I do the imap outlook sync thing with my windows phone for calendar/contacts and email.

I have 2 imap and 2 pop3 accounts going into one folder calleed 'All Mail'. Saves a lot of sodding about.

IMO it does work very well indeed. One format throughout, it's great.

I have had just one error only, where I had to recreate and delete a calendar entry. That's one error in 5 months.

I'm on win7.5, which will be win8 quite soon and sort out some minor bugs.

Your IT dept will have to authorise your mobile connector thingy and if they say 'No' then you're a bit screwed, though you can still export the contacts and manage your own set.

In the end, the stupid limitations on sideloading onto a Win8 phone have pissed me off so completely I've decided to stick with my old Android, and if it dies I'll probably stay Android.

Still good to know the imap email works well, may well be applied to my netbook and laptop ...
