Shame about the loss of life but does the NZ navy really have a Mine Countermeasures team?
Who do they think are going to plant mines around NZ and how much does this cost the country?
Maybe it is a throwback from the Rainbow Warrior limpet mine incident but that was so long ago.

Are they having issues with their reception?

Yeah, its a couple of old geezers with a stethoscope and a pair of rusty wire cutters.
The technique was pioneered in 1914-18, and proved again 39-45 - so its bound to still be good - and besides its still the same two guys doing it :)

I'm pretty sure these are the guys that found the Princess Ashika wreck in Tonga and who also found the downed plane today. I'm fairly sure the families of the dead in both incidents are quite thankful for their services and I for one don't really care what they cost our country.

Yes we have always had a mine couter measure team (https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=remus&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a#hl=en&newwindow=1&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB%3Aofficial&sclient=psy-ab&q=rnzn+mine+countermeasures&oq=RNZN+mine+counter&gs_l=serp.3.0.33i21.224563.235004.1.236786.23.20.2 .1.1.0.838.6619.1j0j6j11j1j0j1.20.0...1.0...1c.1.8 .psy-ab.Zr1HecAiCKA&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.44697112,d.aGc&fp=739134a7c17c883f&biw=1280&bih=891)...

They also use REMUS (http://www.navy.mil.nz/know-your-navy/official-documents/navy-today/nt08webformat/jun08/remus.htm)

Anti-mine and anti-sub roles in our strategic alliances have been the responsibility GodZone forces for a long time ... keeps us away from the front lines where our navy is not up to shit ..

Mine "counter measures" are not exclusively intended for detection of mines seeded in our lifetimes fellas. The oceans and their floors are littered with unexploded mines from WWII and even WWI..and a lot a not too far from our back door. Mines were laid by own navy to protect our harbours...maybe some are still on the bottom...just beside Welly's Shed 3 perhaps?
New Caledonia sea floor is chocablok with them...so investment in this sea floor mapping gizmo is well worth it in my view. It took 6 years to rage WWII - it'll take 100+ times that to clean up the explosive debris left behind..or for it rust and fizzle away..
