Wainuiomata Hill road surface repairs

After you come over the Wainui Hill road heading to Lower Hutt, the first corner or so has been repaired by a new method. The repairs have had a grippy additive included. Similar product has been used at the bottom of Dowse Drive also, but that is a large and continuous 'patch' on a tight corner, rather than thinner and longer patch works on the Wainui Hill.

Can I please get some feedback from bikers in Wainui, or those that use the Wainui Hill Road as to their comments on the patched repairs.

Good/bad feedback - I would love to hear it please. Are the repairs visible, smooth, grippy, horrible/why ?

I noticed on the way home from work that it appeared to be getting patchy in places but I'd need to have a closer look really. I didn't think it would last long given the heavy trucks pulling out logs lately. It's held up better than I thought though.

If you are talking about the jigsaw puzzle just over the crest it is diabolical. About 10mm higher than the surrounding surface. Like riding over a rumble strip, just in the right place to upset your bike prior to the first left hander.

Assuming you mean the seal repairs on the left-hand corner just after the summit heading towards the Hutt.

Having ridden over them a couple of times in the dark and at dusk I'd say.

1, yes they are very visible once they come into view and are visually upsetting as at first glance look like a tar snake.

2, I found them smooth enough but then I ride a long travel suspended dual purpose bike.

3, the grip seems all right in the dry and on a damp road. I'm not yet back up to the speed I'd normally take that corner at as if your bike does slide you have a medium barrier fairly close.

4, visually I think they are horrible. practically if they last the grip so far seems to be reasonable and better than smooth tar.

I even up the tread depth on the sides of my dual purpose tyres to match the wear on the centre bit from riding gravel roads.;)

actually I use my 3/4 worn tyres for commuting purposes as I have an extra set of wheels

I don't commute over there but the Hutt downhill side has been a fairly brutal patchwork for ages/ever. How recently are we talking?

What's wrong with the Dowse interchange? Given that it's a short section of 50km/h commuter territory I don't ask much of it but I haven't even noticed any seal repairs.

Just in the last week or so.

The Dowse seal is on the first corner heading up the hill - not actually the interchange itself.

Are you talking about that light brown stuff they put around some corners? Almost looks like sandpaper?
There is the occasional corner with it down here , most corners its coming apart, sort of delaminating but from my experience its still fine to ride over and it lasts alot longer than typical asphalt.

They are shit. Came over there in the right hand lane the morning after they had been done. At 5 in the morning. Not very pleasant at all. I now make sure I'm in the other lane going over the hill to the hutt now.

Sounds like the same although the colour can vary. Rather than applying a continous and road width patch, it has been used to patch up strips of road, much like tar snakes, but with grippy aggregate.

Apparently, according to a local councilor, the jigsaw section "has been tested by police and private motor cyclists and confirmed safe at the speed limit." Interested to know if anyone knows anything about this..

Sorry but I call bullshit on that one, when I spoke to the contracting company that laid the 'jigsaw' there was no mention of any testing and they admitted to the fact that two wheel vehicles were not a consideration when designing those road repairs...

I had the same feeling, when I told as well....

There have been a number of complaints to HCC- the more that go in the better.
