View Full Version : Repainting tank on GN250?

bosslady
5th April 2013, 08:32
I want to re-paint the tank on my gn250.

Would I follow the instructions as in this link? http://www.wikihow.com/Paint-a-Motorcycle-Tank

I don't have a sandblaster, I will need to do it by hand. Can someone please recommend some sandpaper grades (waterproof is it?) to start with and what to work my way up to? Do I need anything else other than this, to remove existing paint work i.e. some kind of stripper?

Recommend me a primer (if I need one?) Can I get anything from http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz ??

Base paint. Where can I get this? I do want blank but thought it would be nice to have something with a slight glittery effect, not just dead black. But I don't know where to get this? Suggestions please?

Clear Coat. Again is this something I can get from http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz ?? I thought if I am going to do clear coat maybe I will do one layer, put some decals on the tank then do another 2-3 layers, thoughts?

I'm stuck with my bike for at least another year so want to do something with it to make it a little bit different......

Appreciate any product recommendations please!

Use stripper, because strippers are lovely.

I'd go with a high build primer over the top of an etch primer if you've taken it to bare steel.

Base paint. Where can I get this? I do want blank but thought it would be nice to have something with a slight glittery effect, not just dead black. But I don't know where to get this? Suggestions please? Supersheep will do base colours in both rattle cans and in tins (use a paint gun, or a brush for teh epic win rustic look to pull da bitches)

Clear Coat. Again is this something I can get from http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz ?? I thought if I am going to do clear coat maybe I will do one layer, put some decals on the tank then do another 2-3 layers, thoughts? You can also get clear from teh supersheeps that'll work with their colours, which is handy. Decals, then clear. MSTRS on here does good work with decals, I've got my last set from him for a good price and they're bad-ass

You may notice when you take the Suzuki badges off that there's an uber ugly mount for the badges under it and you'll want to bog it I suppose. Supersheeple carry many different flavours of bog and it'll only take a small tin. The blade putty/spot putty works well, just etch prime before laying it down and do several thin layers of it.

Will that even do much or should I just get busy with sanding? Can you recommend a brand or type or anything?

If I'm going to just do another black over it anyway, do I need to sand right down to the steel and then prime it? Or can I just sand the clear coat off, spray this other black paint over the top then do my clear coat and decals etc.

Supersheep will do base colours in both rattle cans and in tins (use a paint gun, or a brush for teh epic win rustic look to pull da bitches)
No access to a paint gun, I will have to use a spray can or whatever, thought I might try and find a nice colour with a bit of glitter in it but I don't know where to get that

I think my flatmate has some bog, but can't I just put a decal over it do you think?

What is etch prime?

Will that even do much or should I just get busy with sanding? Can you recommend a brand or type or anything? Stripper should just eat the paint, Tergo does a reasonably good one at about $25-30 for a bottle and I think you can get some other brands at superpleeb

I would think the paints would react with each other and you'll end up with orange peel 280973 which IMO looks worse than bleeding dicks

Might as well paint it a cool colour? Black is sooooo civil war.

Recommend me a product lol, there are so many!! They do a range of automotive acrylic lacquers, which are the easiest to get a decent finish from because you can sand and polish the fuck out of them.

I think my flatmate has some bog, but can't I just put a decal over it do you think? The decal will sag in to the recesses of the tank mount and look similar to bleeding dicks

What is etch prime? Etch primer is what you generally use on bare steel to seal it (no, not that kind of seal!)

I'm concerned for you. You appear to have considerable experience with bleeding dicks.

Will see how I go at the paint shop today. I thought black with some kind of silver shiny glitter on it? If I do anything else I thought maybe it won't match the skulls and shit on there? Won't look bad ass enough. Unless you can quickly recommend any other colours for me?

you can buy a brand new GN250 tank, painted, pinstriped and with new badges for 150.00 NZ on tardme..

prob the same you will spend on a can or two of primer, a can or two of rattle black, sandpaper, degreaser/meths, and the hours you put in trying to get it looking half decent..

2 cents of opinion for ya ;)

Failing that I have had good results from actual Auto paintshops.. you go in there, look through their catalogues of paints.. find a wicked color or make your own color up (ie black mixed with a gold fleck or something) - they will brew up the mix and then put it into a spray can for you (Colour Connection, Dunedin) and you can also buy little attachments that click onto the spraycan so you have a handle and a trigger so you can use it like a paint gun.. good for getting nice even smooth coats.. and less paint on your hands.
these custom filled rattle cans from Colour Connection are 30 buck a pop.. and thats for a base coat/clear coat.. so you have to buy a can of clear as well.. BUT they are massive cans, prob 1.5-2 times the size of ur repco or warehouse shite.. and its proper paint.

Problem with that is that I buy a $150 tank, new, but it still has all the f*cking pinstripes/stickers and shit on it which have been clear coated over, that's what I want to get rid of it makes my shitty bike look shitt-ier. I also don't want the badges on it either, I'm going to take them off, put bogs in the holes that will be left over, I guess, and put decals over the top.

Well I wasn't suggesting you set fire to eet :innocent:

I'd be more inclined to have them airbrushed prior to a clear coat. The tanks that Fast Edward eluded to are pretty inexpensive, if it were me I'd buy one & give it to a professional like Crazefox down in Wellington to do a proper flame job to, maybe even some ghosted skulls. That way you can still ride your bike whilst the work is being done and when it comes time to sell you're not limiting yourself to potential buyers who share your taste in customization.

P.S I don't think it will make your bike go faster, I know it will ;)

Black/silver will work well for some sweet-ass skullz. You'll be cooler than penguin flaps.

I'd love to get something custom and airbrushed however I'm too poor  also my bike isn't that great don't think I'd get much for it no matter what customisations were on it, lol. $150 isn't much for a tank but still a lot for me. I can't ride this weekend any way and probably won't need/want to until next Friday night when I have to ride down to Taupo.

Rule of thumb is that customizations usually detract from resale value, rather than increase. Do a cheap job & you'll save $ in the short-term but you'll likely end up losing more come sale time. Having the original tank available still should you decide to go a bit mad with skulls, etc will pay the $150 back when you come to sell eet IMO.

I wonder if decals would look good on top of a newly coloured tank without clear coat over it?

ANYWAY. I talked to my neighbour in the warehouse next door (mechanics) and asked if he could give me any advice and he sent me to his friends around the corner at a panel beaters. He said he would strip/sand the tank AND side covers down, fill in the holes that are left by removing the badges, prime it (however many times), base coat AND pearl (however many times) and clear coat (again, however many times) for $350 - is this a good deal? Sounds OK to me??

But now I'm thinking if I paid someone to do it, maybe I SHOULD get some funky colour? thoughts?????????

Edited to add: The paint job would also come with a guarantee.

Can't say if it is a good offer or not, but it would be very tempting to me :)

I like the pearl/red idea or maybe a dark purple.

And lets face it, the resale value of a GN is not that amazing anyway. A nice paint would probably make it at least stand out more.

I wasn't suggesting you do hold grudges, merely pointing out that we don't seem to agree on a lot. I like blues & greens myself rather than reds, orange & yellows and the brighter the better. Baby blue isn't too masculine and bright enough that car drivers will see you coming as you split up the Northern Motorway ;)

Find someone with photoshop (and who knows how to use it) and apply different colours to an image of your bike maybe?

Funny I thought pic 4 looked the best.

Bear in mind a plain tank with no decals, lines or badges can look a little odd and un-finished. You can add them later but they really should have a clear coat over the top for protection.

It will be interesting to see the final outcome.

Personally, on a bike like the GN, I'd stick with a single solid colour with no more than a small pinstripe.

Wait 'till you get to the paintshop and they show you the colour charts

Dark colours work best with the GN I think, so my votes for the deep red. The tank becomes too over bearing with bright colours on such a small bike. Standard black with the original stripe worked for me once I'd tilted the tank. I think the stripes help towards the appearance of a smaller tank.

I chose a very dark, deep red. I might not get white pearl if it ends up being too expensive. I was originally going to go with black base with a pearl which is apparently cheaper but red with pearl is a little more... he said he'd spray me a panel and see what I think. I'm also gettin my screen done. I'd like a pin stripe decal, where can I get one made for my bike??

The spraypainter should be able to apply a pinstripe prior to a clearcoat. They normally have rolls of pinstriping in stock to match existing stripes for repairs, although this is becoming less common nowadays with modern vehicles. Ask when you go to check out the sample paint.

Cool. Next question, where do you think I should put the stripes on the tank? top, bottom, middle of the side. Or the top of the tank I.e. where the cap is.

If they're pinstripes nobody's going to see them on the top of the tank. Pinstripes are usually placed on an edge or a curve to highlight or accentuate the form of the panel they're placed on. Got a photo of your bike (of course you do), open the image in MS Paint and play around with different placement options by drawing lines over the photo.

Skills on the parking...:niceone:

It was at a sports grounds and those empty parks were not empty when she arrived, my sons game had just finished so lots left, Not a lot of parking in visible spots for bikes and a risk to park it down the back with so much happening in the car parks. My bike (in the background with my son on) was parked out the back until a vehicle moved so I could bring it forward...... a car was parked where hers is before too..

Not sure I get what you mean with that. If it is a nice colour it should still look good, right?

JMSR

True for sure. But it depends on how much you want the object to stand out as the eye of the beholder will always rest on the biggest and brightest. Check out below. I really liked the plain steel tank but it was a dominating focal point. The onlooker should see the whole bike first THEN start noticing details. Mind you, no rules in customizing eh?

If you have been looking at a dark red, then Burgundy and a fine gold pinstripe might be a go.

you can buy a brand new GN250 tank, painted, pinstriped and with new badges for 150.00 NZ on tardme..

prob the same you will spend on a can or two of primer, a can or two of rattle black, sandpaper, degreaser/meths, and the hours you put in trying to get it looking half decent..

Thats real cool info thanks I got tank done chch in 80,s dude was amazing was with british bike shop there forget the name

Yeah there was 1 photo that just about made me settle on plain steel. The standard black is a long term temp but I kinda like it's style. Mind you, I'm thinking of putting chinese dragons with laser beams for eyes on the sides of my tank. That gives you some idea of my thoughts on the subject of style I guess.

Just to be a prat, that pic is a Japanese dragon as it only has 3 toes. Chinese have 4 or 5 if they are imperial dragons. :weird:

I'll reserve my thoughts on colour until I see it in natural light, The off light colour looks a bit "muddy" and not the clean flip that can be ..... But as I stated in the emails, photo's never do justice to a colour, especially in low light.

Painted a early Camaro last year that ended up NZV8 magazine..... and the bright high sparkle pearl didn't show at all.. almost looked black

Ok, so far I'm liking it, but I'm looking forward to see it in real life tonight, and with decals. You might want to think about what JMSR said, though. It would look pretty neat if the front guard was panted the same red and had a black stripe in the middle. Would match the screen quite nicely in my opinion.

Possibly. But I'm too poor now. I think apart from some decals and maybe a nice badge, that's it for her. No point investing any more money on the bike apart from normal maintenance!

Honest opinion, I would not be overly happy with that...if the colour (at the very least) looks 'brighter' in the flesh, then mmmmmmm maybe?
A vibrant colour with white pearl added would have been the winner with no badges/stripes. But as it is now?, it really needs something to lift it because without the word Suzuki, it looks unfinished, almost like a home job.

Sorry to sound so negative, I am going on my first thoughts after seeing the pics.
I understand the $12-1500 bike V money spent on it, I am a tight bastard when it comes to spending money on bikes...fuel/rego/tyres...done!
If I were to go to the effort of changing the colour and getting it done professionally, I would expect nothing the best outcome.
I attempted something similar with a Yamaha I once owned (added some yellow shit) didn't really do it for me in the end, so sold it.

Here is Annes brand new 05' GN...for a stock colour, it was really nice, even with the badges/stripes.

bosslady
13th April 2013, 12:16
It doesn't really look like the pictures and the pics ARE of it unfinished. I am getting custom badges put on the side in the next month or so when I decide what I want. I reckon it looks cool. Getting pearl was too expensive for this colour. I'm happy, it looks different which is what I wanted.
