Have done my share of 3/6 hr hare scrambles best way to get the fitness up ride the bike not for a 15min sprint but a 45-50min moto pull in gas up have a drink then back out and do it again.
Races can be won or lost in the pits when refueling a few tips tie a big ribbon to your fuel drum[easy to see and find in a crowded pits] use a quick pour spout, change your goggles gloves when refueling, use a camel hydration pack. Practice your dead in starts as every one you beat of the line to the first corner will be the easiest pass of the race.
Have raced in events with up to 250 riders all going for one 10 foot gate off the start carnage at its best[watch the Tarawera 100 start on u tube] some don't even make it past the first corner, they mainly mark, tape the corners and danger spots so don't just think the tracks 10 feet wide learn to read the terrain and ride smart.

Pace yourself. for the first one ride at about 80%.
After that you have a gauge to go off whether you can speed up or need to slow down.
Food and hydration are your biggest concerns and this means the day before as the food you eat today is the fuel for tomorrow.
If you are thirsty you are already dehydrated and you will start to cramp, also don't just have water as you will loose a shit load of other stuff that will need to be put back in.

see if there is any camera footage on Youtube so you can guess what to expect.
Set a plan for the day, goals you want, like every lap I will pit and drink a bottle of water, long straights I will relax and drink from my hydration pack.
Unless you are extremely good you will not win your first event so pace and enjoy yourself.

Mind you my first two man (solo) I went flat out and had to be helped off the bike as everything had cramped up and all I could do was lean against a tree.

Yes not my finest ride day, went down a bank and burnt out trying to get back up.

WMCC ride tomorrow.

These are good practice as they are basically the length of the laps so you can see how you can go for 3-4 hours with no pressure.

Put a cheap watch on your handlebar ( around the pad works well ), nothing like thinking you are two hours in ( short laps ) when it's really more like one hour twenty to make your three hour race seem to take forever.
