We spent 3 days near Shanghai last June. The sheer size of China is mindblowing. We were driven for two hours from Shanghai (23 million) to Suzhou (12 million and growing fast). 20 story apartment buildings that had been built 10-20 at a time (identical style) for miles and traffic that even YouTube clips don't do justice to.

China could (and will) buy NZ as they would a corner store. We hardly rate a mention other than just another acquisition for China to build its future food security.

The 320kmh bullet train was a blast though :woohoo:

Not quite. Dairy farming isn't exactly rocket science and humans have been doing it for 6000 years. The Chinese government have realised despite China being an enormous country, there is a limited amount of arable land to produce food. That land is besieged daily by air polluntants and desertfication as the land turns to dust.

So remembering that the Chinese are legendary at taking the long view, they have been encouraging their entreprenueurs to buy land in fertile places to secure the nations food needs. Mostly this happens in Africa where the land is cheap.

And they are not the only ones. There is a valley in Ethiopia leased to Arabs which produces massive amounts of vegetables, all of which are shipped the very short distance to the Middle East.

The world is becoming smaller every day.

Quite probably. Although I don't trust him as far as I can throw him. He's already borrowed about $60 billion from somewhere and what price will the Chinese ask for that loan. I have nothing against the Chinese, after all they can so what they like with their economy without being bullied by the international community, but it does concern me what the cost will be. I'm wondering if they're setting themselves up for oil in a similar way to Ecuador recently. It would certainly explain the recent story's about conservation land being opened up for exploration etc...

Fonterra are planningto build 27 more dairy farms over there by 2020 and still export to them.

The US exported $400 million worth of dairy products to China last year, it wasn't enough.

If they bought all NZ's dairy farm land, it still wouldn't be enough to cope with demand.
